On Saturday my 3 1/2 year old Grandson will be making attending his first Rovers game , with his Grandad , Great Grandad and Uncle , he already recognises the badge and shirt and has been asking for months to come with us , don't know if he will stick the full game but I'm sure it's the first of many visits. So welcome young Oliver to the Rovers Family. :rtid:

Welcome Oliver to many years of ups and downs with Doncaster!
-
He'll love it. 3 points to the mighty Rovers and championship status secured.
-
Take plenty of spice and crisps but don't take too much pop.
-
"spice" - now that's a word (in that context) I haven't heard for decades!
-
I like to keep it Yorkshire, keepin it real for the 70s and 80s kids.
-
I wonder if a "10p mix" would satisfy a 3 year old these days!
-
No it doesn't, 30p is the minimum nowadays
-
Make sure you've got a smart phone with games on. I first started taking my lad from the age of four and he'd lose interest about 10 mins in the second half.
-
as sad says above, he will love it i am sure my boy is four and has been home and away and he loves it

Same here. I had to think for a while what 'spice' was. I always used to call them spice as a kid.
-
Still call them spice....must be my age.
-
My cousins in Hull used to call them spice as did people in West Yorkshire.
In Balby in the 50s we used to call them scoffs. :)

Scoffs was still used in Balby when I was growing up there in the 80s and 90s
-
We still say 'scoffs' in Bentley. It's a word more commonly used in posher areas, like Bentley.
-
Spice in Dunscroft in the 80s

For some obscure reason that I don't know, its called "kett" up here in parts of the NE

I think you'll find that kids in the North East are eating Kettamine.

You'll be claiming they're mules next ;)

Remember getting a flat box of Butterscotch from Donny races if me Grandad had a decent day on the nags.
-
Good luck to Oliver - he's the future for our "Pub Team"
OMG idler, methinks you're nearly as old as me! Do you remember the first game under floodlights against Falkirk? Can't remember the score but great atmosphere.
My missus is from Bentley, but when she lived there the posh part was a figment of the imagination  Must have changed after all these years eh Bentley
:rtid:
-
there's a posh part of Balby????
(before anyone takes offence, I have several generations of close family from there...)
-
You've got me beat. I'll be there tomorrow with my dad & my 13y.o lad who's 1st match was away to Nuneaton at 6 months!

That was a bit too early for me. I'm 65 and lived on St Catherine's Ave from 1948 until marrying in 1972. My dad wouldn't let me go until 1958 because of the big crowds. Prior to that it was youth games and friendlies only? Happy days.

You might have known my Nan she lived at no 34 (poss 32) for years until she died in 1965. Her name was Mary, my Dad (Bill) was there till he married in 1957 aged about 33 so he'd been there some years, he played Roller Hockey all over the place even touring abroad. there was a few sisters all older than him though.
Grandad died in 1936 so Nan was a "single Mum" for years you might have even come across me when I was a little ankle biter
-
I lived at 49, next door but one to the fish shop. My brothers are 10 and 14 years older than me so probably knew your dad.
What was your Nan's surname?

Mary Cook fiery red hair she had (well when she was younger) Dads still alive and kicking and being a strop at the grand old age of 89
-
Remember the name well. Just can't put a face there though.
It must be an age thing.
I remember the McCabes next to Mr. Settle's shop.
The Dawsons and the Yates families.
-
I was only 7 when Nan died so I don't really remember the family names down there, I'll ask my Dad but you tend to have to pick your moments with him now.
Nan always wore one of them Pinniesyou know those that covered the back and front a sort of swirly pattern on it, your about 10 years older than me

My tip is document everything with Photos Score Attendance Opponent etc
In 56 or 57 (see what I mean) I watched my first ever Rovers game v a Team in Black and White stripes .... and that is all I know
When I took my Great Nephew to Belle Vue for his first game I took several photos and produced him a framed record with everything on it. He will know and have photos of Rovers v Rovram 3-1 and all the scorers etc
Recommended (just wish I had something similar)
-
He's already got his shirt on !!!!!!
-
Will PM you what I did (if I can) ... wont take much beating !
-
He Loved it , and he says we won , so it must be true , stayed till 87th min.
-
good lad a rover for many a year to come now
-
Glad he enjoyed it mate, good to see that he stuck it out until (almost) the bitter end, there's a few older Rovers that should take a leaf from his book!

Nice one. You can't beat getting the little uns involved. That naive enthusiasm.
My 7 year old has been coming on and off for 4 years. He's besotted with "Browny". If we've played and he hasn't gone to the match, his first question is " Did Browny score?"
-
Glad he enjoyed it pretty amazing he near enough stuck it out
Sorry me and Idler nearly hijacked the thread it wasn't intentional we've gone on using the pm system now! Idler thought it for the best which I agree with
