So it's been decided london will be the place for my stag do in August, were staying in a cracking hotel just outside Tottenham court road tube station so has anyone got any good recommendations boozers wise that are off the tourist trap radar?

I think I'm right in saying that the tube trains finish at a ridiculously early time for a 24 hour city. Around midnight from what I remember. I blame the unions for putting their workers before the public they are supposed to serve.

Your right but after a skinfull Ill walk, taxi or get a rickshaw back to our digs......... as long as iv not been tied to a lampost in Soho that is

Apparently the buses still run late and are regular. Be careful in Soho. You'll be invited into dodgy bars and then charged £20 for a half and not get what you expected. It's a well known con.

There's a nice pub as you walk down the back way to Buckingham Palace, turn left out of Victoria Station and keep heading towards the palace. It's on a corner but a decent little pub which has never been busy every time we've gone in. Food nice and drink cheap (well, cheapest considering it's the capital!)

The night buses run all night but if you're staying on Tottenham court Rd you're nice and central anyway. You probably won't stray too far away.
You are spoilt for choice for bars n that. If you want somewhere a bit more reasonably priced try the Sam Smiths pubs in Soho. There is the John Snow on Broadwick St, just off Carnaby st. The Champion on Wells St, Fitzrovia, The Angel, St Giles St just around and the corner from the BBC and lots of others.
That Fitzrovia part of town wouldn't be a bad place to start, there are lots of bars around there. Its just a bit north of where you are staying.

If you're going down on the train, the Parcel Yard in Kings Cross station is nice if a bit expensive. There is a new development just around the corner from Kings cross station, Varnishers yard, that s good too.

Why are you again turning a simple question from the OP into an opportunity to slag off the unions? In recent months I have travelled to London, Paris, Berlin, Santiago, Dubai and Singapore. All of which have metro/underground/u-bahn sytems that generally close between midnight and 1 am, to open again around 5.30 am. The only difference is that the Berlin U-bahn operates for 24 hours at weekends. Even in New York, the city that never sleeps, the subway offers only a reduced service overnight.
I suggest the operating times of the London underground are relatively normal compared to other cities. Plus London has night buses, so please get off your political high horse on a non-political thread!!
To the OP, I would possibly recommend the Firkin chain - maybe these days there are too many in the chain but a few years ago these were great drinking pubs with own-brewed ales etc..

Just got back today after 3 nights in London. Thursday we went shoreditch, brilliant place. Ended in a club called cargo. Friday saw Arctic Monkeys and last night went Camden which was superb.
London amazes me every time, what a city.

Most places in Zone 1 are your run of the mill night out on the town, with some overpriced Euroclubs in Soho thrown into the mix.
If you wanted a bit of everything I'd do a pub crawl starting in Southwark/London Bridge, cross the bridge, head up through Bishopgate to some bars in Shoreditch and then an underground club in Dalston/Stoke Newington. Depending on how many of you there are and how pissed you are you might struggle to get in a few bars/clubs in Hackney, but you'll find something.
If you really wanted to get out of the touristy areas, head over to Hackney Wick.

cheers BCS that sounds like my cup of tea, probably give shoreditch a miss as Im far from being a student and not very hip, were all 35 plus so just looking for a laugh not many posers in our gang! are there any soul/motown clubs in the area?

Not sure on the motown angle. Probably best to give it a google or have a look on twitter. You might find something round Brick Lane/Whitechapel way - I remember going to a northern soul night round that way a few years back.
Most of the underground clubs in Dalston/Stoke Newington are electro/dance music.
Camden probably offers an alternative with Barfly and Proud - although not been to either recently. The BigChill round Kings Cross is also fairly popular.

Depending on the experience you're after I'd recommend either the Nag's Head in Shoreditch or Spearmint on Tottenham Court Rd. for your gentlemen's entertainment.
