Must be my age but can anyone else recall how exciting it was in Doncaster in September - leger, air show, football and conkers

Yes, I do, unfortunately it always tied in with the return to school after the summer holidays, so that was the shit bit lol

Perversely I didn't mind that it might playing for a proper team rather than games that ranged from one a side up to about 20 a side

We lived in Clumber Road, Belle Vue and i made a 'car park' sign out of a piece of hardboard nailed to an old broom handle and managed to get four cars up our drive to earn quite a bit of pocket money. And if the horses had been kind to someone i got a tip!
And the sights and sounds of the funfair at night, winning a goldfish and a coconut.
And does anyone here remember that exotic tipster at the races: Prince Monolulu? A fabulous legendary guy and the first black person i ever saw.
Because of the races , Rovers games would be on a friday night and one year 22,000 turned up for a division 4 game v Darlington.
But then yes. Back to school.

would walk to air show from cantley and walk back again afterwards and be gob smacked especially at amount of traffic after the show plugging along at a snails
pace.
this is even when they had built a platform in finningley to off load and load
passengers on the Train.

I remember newspaper headlines describing a 'Wembley sized crowd' so i would say 100,000.
I used to catch the train to the special wooden platformed station they would build each year.
And somewhere theres a photo of me wearing a pilots helmet in the cockpit if a Hawker Hunter.
And, oh those Vulcans!!!!

I lived in cantley6 and you could hear them vulcans clear as day When they warned up and took off .
Me old man used to work along side the vulcans at finningley on the ground and he tell us Thats vulcans getting ready to take off
Got a great air picture Thats Black and white Of a vulcan bomber going over Conisboro Castle in the background
Was really pissed off When RAF finningley was closed down tbh

I grew up in Rosso and we used to walk it most years. Went in my Uncle Ron's Anglia once and could have walked it twice in the time it took to get there. The Vulcans, the Lightnings, and the Red arrows were the highlights for me.

Yes I remember Price Moncrief ,sorry monolulu. He used to ply his tipster trade in Doncaster Market on the morning of racing , his catchphrase being " I gotta horse" and then down to the course in the afternoon for the racing. True Racing Legend

The Vulcan flew right over my house yesterday at about 3.30pm after it took off from the airport

Good read on that Brighton site. He was certainly flambuoyant tovput it mildly. He was very much a ladies man and travelled all over the place. I wouldnt be surprised if he were the Grandad of the guy in Boney M who died last year!!!
Sad to think that we now have Nigel Farage spouting at the Racecourse today, whingeing that Parliament has been recalled today to keep him out of the news.
He is calling for HS2 to be cancelled. And i am sure he would like to have the Channel tunnel filled in!!
I wonder if he will be remembered in a september in Doncaster thread in forty years time?
