Title: Light switch issue...
Post by: jonnydog on October 25, 2014, 02:04:51 pm
Hi All

Quick question to any electricians or people on the know...

I am changing an old dimmer switch to a normal 'on' 'off' switch. I Unscrewed dimmer and was greeted with 3 red wires, one going in to 'L1' and the other two going into 'C'. Nothing going into L2 (see picture1).

The new switch has L, L1 and L2. (See picture 2).

Where would each of the 3 red wires go now?

All help appreciated, ta.

Looks like dimmer is 2 way, but normal switch 1 way.

The two red wires together are the Live - so it goes into L
The single red wire is the switched live (that goes to the light fitting) so it goes into L1
L2 is only used if you have 2 way switching ie a switch at each door into a room.

If the switch is the wrong way up when the light is on - either turn the switch upside down or swap the single red wire to L2

If you've had the switch for a while, get a new one. If you can't afford to, dim as low as possible, they all look and feel the same in the dark

I served my time as a sparky but haven't touched the tools in years - I have other people do it for me now  ;)
