Was looking around t'interweb at pictures of Belle Vue, and couldn't really find that many quality/professional photos that show Belle Vue in its prime; most are more recent photos of a crumbling old stadium. Wondered what are peoples favourite photos of OBV and if they'd like to share them? :)
-
Been looking my self on internet , seen one, away end packed but can't see who it's against? Got some good memos though,
-
I like this of the old popside

Given the amount of duplication between the book about BV and the DVD which came out around the time w moved, there weren't even that many snaps available to the club maybe?

that's my worry, but there must be some photos out there that could become or should be iconic? Something that you would see in the Belle Vue Bar for example and it bring back great memories with a quick glance?
That's a good one Filo; you know of any similar to that but facing the main stand?
-
I remember a home game, early 80's. It was one of the last home games of the season and we had either just been relegated from the 3rd division (82/83 season?).
I stood on the main stand terrace, and had made my way to the exit towards the Rosso end - always drifted to the exits (for a quick getaway) before the final whistle but always stayed until the end (still do). The Pop Side, however, full size and fully roofed in all its glory, was virtually deserted. The game was still playing, not much happening on the pitch, and it was sunny and warm.
That view that day of the Pop Side was almost surreal, and would have made an "arty" photo...

This one from Stuart Roy Clarke. Wonderfully evocative.

Seen that one a few times BST and it is a wonderful photo.
Although not as arty, I quite like this one too. Reminds you just how wide the pitch was:

Some great photos on here, we should try and keep this going.
On a similar subject, is the book of Belle Vue worth buying? Or the DVD?

Yes.
If you look at them from a non-DRFC supporting perspective then you could argue that they are not great value, and a bit repetitive from one to the other.
But for DRFC fans with long standing memories of Belle Vue, these are must haves IMHO.

I 'played' in the Brian Makepeace game. Got skinned by ROK, and missed a bit of a sitter

Me too daggers!
See how high above the pitch that Rosso End pic was taken from too. Used to stand on the top of there sometimes. Even saw Donny Utd playing from time to time from there. Remember those 12 floodlights mounted on the back of the pylon in the Rosso End/Pop Side corner so that Utd could have a bit of light?
And that clock in the Cow Shed too! Always remember that. Barker & Wigfall had something to do with it didn't they? I guess they bit the dust years ago now too?
And just a thought. As a real youngster, I have vague memories of a sort of platform thing built up on stilts on the top of the Rosso End. It was used to show half time scores but it used letters to identify each match and you could only see which letter was each match if you bought a programme. Some urchin used to shin about up there putting 1-0 against match A and so on.
Anyone else remember it? Anyone got a photo of it?
Cheers

That was the half-time scoreboard Bob! One of my very favourite memories from Belle Vue.
As a kid, I used to be mesmerised by the sight of that young guy climbing up the ladder at half time to put up the scores.
Of course, you had to consult your programme to de-code the formula.
"H".........0
"J"..........1
"A"..........0
"B"..........0
Ruddy hell, I would think, checking the letters on the board against the key in my programme as the lad lifted each square up and hooked it onto the scoreboard..... Liverpool and Everton are locked in a nil-nil draw at half time....!
Then you would sense someone leaning over your shoulder to try and get a glimpse of which team was which letter..... "Bugger off"! I would think, hiding my programme under my arm. "Buy your own ruddy programme if you want to know the Enigma Codes!"

I would love to get a copy of "a crack at Belle Vue".
It is cracking. So evocative. Art and Donny Rovers aren't often mentioned in the same breath but... In this picture it is fair.
If you are interested I can tell you why this photo is so good that it is a piece of art.
The composition is beautiful. A slit of light showing the football field through the gates.
The beauty of the aged, decomposing gates themselves.
It says heritage, it says football, it says community.
It is bloody brilliant.
It is one of the best photographs of football I have ever seen.
-
anybody remember one of the advertising signs that were hung off the front or the mainstand and hitting somebody at one game
-
Graing: thank you. Cracking picture. Can you tell me what that buidling is just behind the Pop side please? I thought the airport buildings (and later the airport club) are the little cluster at the top left of centre. But perhaps I'm wrong? And, where the dickens is the half time score board on the Rosso end?! surely it wasn't put up after 1953? MY memory of it must be from around 1963-65 or so and it looked fairly decrepit as I remember it. That can't be right surely?
Bob

RD, that picture of Belle Vue is Stuart's best selling photo and has been the cover on at least one of his books. I have the postcard version. I've spoke to him a few times and tried to negotiate a decent sized print at a decent price, unfortunately they don't come cheap.
-
I've got a copy on this pc somewhere. Don't know how and don't know when. But I've defo got a jpg of it somewhere.

Is that Ces Pod playing them onside
Aye, that's Ces. Saw him last week, his under 16's team in the Caribbean are two stages away from world cup qualification. He looks about 35 years old.
-
If I remember rightly, that is the midweek win over Bradford the year we went up in 1981. Amazing how things like that can stick in my head but I can't remember what I had for tea last night.
There was a cracking shot of Belle Vue packed in about 1984 against Rotherham in the next league programme (I am sure it was Cambridge). If I can get at my programmes from in the loft, I will scan it and put it on here. I have some crackers from more recently when we won the fourth division in 2004.

Stuart Roy Clarke says it's his finest photo. If he ever composes a better one, it'd be something special. For all the reasons you say RD.
My wife bought me a signed copy of it for my 40th a few years ago. It's on the wall of my study. I could state at it for hours. When my kids are old enough to appreciate it, I'll tell them of the times I stood exactly there at 14:55 on a Saturday with their grandad who they never knew, anticipation knotting our stomachs as we waited to go through the turnstiles.
It somehow isn't quite the same at the modern, antiseptic hermetically sealed bowls.

I certainly remember watching Donny United when the match I'd paid to see got boring. Not that it happened often, of course 😉

I remember it well .... I have no photo of it but it is in one of the Team Photos of Rovers that I see regularly
Maybe Football League Review photo of the 66/67 team. I am sure someone must have that one as I wee it everywhere? I think the Players are stood on Half way line with their backs to the enormous Rosso End
I will look at my FLR's and Rovers Handbooks if nobody comes up with it

But crikey! It survived a helluva lot longer than I thought then. If I'd guessed I would have said it had gone by mid to late 60's. But, clearly, it was there at the start of the '69 season. Wonder when it did go then?
18 players in that shot. Can't work out who the goalie is...

This is my favourite and its hung in my office for nearly 15 years. Sorry for the poor quality but its a photo of pictures in a frame.
The top picture is after Colchester in 1998 with a small number of people milling about on the Belle Vue turf, bereft of hope. The bottom picture is one year later, celebrating the Conference Cup win in front of the biggest crowd in years. Its my reminder that, in football as in life, no matter how bad things seem, there is always hope.

I have been experimenting with the Photo but can get much other than the last Letter nearest Town End seems to be an "S".
There appears to be an 8 or 9 Letter word then a Badge / Logo and a 4 Letter word ending in "S"
so " Someones" @ ALES ? Nice if it was DARLEYS (then their War Horse Logo) if not Hewitts / Websters / Newark ? Will try more later

Memory returned slightly. The Hull Brewery ad was on main stand front. That looks to me something like Doncaster 308. Maybe I will mess with it over weekend and see what comes up.

I think (but only rhink!) I vaugely remember that Hull Brewey ad along the front of the Main Stand. Would it have been there in the mid 60's WR?

Yes there is a photo of Hull Brewery Ales plastered on Main Stand in this thread somewhere
edit : see Dutch Uncles photo Page 2
-
How about Camerons (badge) Strongarm Ales?
I am obviously guessing but with Camerons based in Malton and Hartlepool I would not have thought they would have much of a presence round here in '35
It may not even be a Brewery but I was trying to think who had a presence in Donny and the ones I mentioned plus Corporation Ales Warwicks maybe Bentinks ? I don't know but I would like to !
-
In the 1946/47 handbook the nearest I have, it featured ads for Tadcaster ( Taddy ) Ales, and Oakwell Ales.

I wondered why the car park was so full when there were no signs of life at BV. Then I looked north a bit and realised it was taken on a race day.
-
On the contrary, Cameron's Ales was the main advert on the front of the Main Stand during the 70's and 80's. can't remember when it was first there though. I'll have a look at my old programmes from 1950's later as front cover was birds eye view of ground.

think someone who shall remain nameless (for the moment) deserves a mention on my thread about radio sheffield mistakes
the link says "Doncaster, crowds at the racecourse, 1953"
that's another £5 i'm owed for spotting the deliberate mistake

That second picture is interesting; you can see at that point flags were still be used to mark the half-way line at Belle Vue. It's very rare you see that in the modern game.

that's another £5 i'm owed for spotting the deliberate mistake
http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/image/eaw049621?search=doncaster&ref=342
note the trees have leaves on looks like a flat meeting possibly Leger Week ? would make more sense to sell the aerial photo as a view during leger week = more profit on sales
Think we got a bit confused with the 35 and 53
I think BobG is talking about the grass in the 35 picture as against the 53 picture. I went looking for something after '35 hoping for a better look at the Advert on Pop Side Roof but only came up with '53 by which time the Advert had gone !

Afraid I can't shed any definitive light on the 1935 advertising, although Oakwell Ales had a long history of advertising at the Rovers
One other advertisement on the main stand in the 1980's always made me laugh - and that was for Plas-Vent (double glazing? plumbing? ducting?). As a Dutch speaker I know well that 'plas', although meaning a lake, is colloquially used for taking a pee. 'Vent' is also a colloquial word for bloke or guy - so although it doesn't actually exist in Dutch - plas-vent always looked like 'piss-head' to me.
I am sure Graingrover would know enough Flemish to agree.

Bit like the once proposed Rolls Royce Silver Mist then Brian.........

That reminds me Bob of a squash match I once played in front of a fairly full gallery in Germany - the refereeing and scoring all being in German. I somehow achieved an air shot and exclaimed something like 'whoops missed', looked at the stony faced gallery and then raised a laugh (major achievement in Germany btw) by saying 'dass war aber Englisch!'
For the non German speakers 'mist' is colloquial German for sh*te.

That's made for a nice break in struggling (not very succesfully) to learn my stuff for Monday. :):)

I think it was the T of the Plas Vent sign that once fell and hit a supporter on the head.

Letters hope it was not too serious A ?

I have a terrible feeling that the poor bloke died as the result of his injuries. I may be wrong though.
-
I was stood on the Town End and watched it come down, looked awful at the time.

Had never heard of this - what year / game was it pls ?
-
Shot in the dark Wolfie but the home game with Swansea in 84-85 season rings a bell. Could very well be wrong though.

I thought it was Newport but I could also be wrong.

Has anybody got any pictures of the game vs. Arsenal in the Carling Cup?
I remember being stood in the Main stand towards the Town end where I always stood and being shoulder-to-shoulder, the atmosphere was amazing and despite the result, what a night!
Stevie Roberts had Robin Van Persie in his back pocket from the first minute! In fact RVP went off injured after about 25 minutes, didn't he?
-
He obviously didn't fancy another challenge like the crunching hard but fair one that dumped him.
I still remember his plaintive look at the ref.

Early 80's?
The clue there is the adult price of £6 for the main stand terrace. Can't remember exactly but I would guess late 80's/early 90's.

I've been reading this forum for a while but never registered since the change from the old Viking forum.
This thread caught my attention, so I thought I'd share something I stumbled across a while back.
A few good photos here after we'd seen the final ball kicked at Belle Vue: http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php/8286-Belle-Vue-Doncaster-Rovers-FC-27-01-07?highlight=DONCASTER (http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php/8286-Belle-Vue-Doncaster-Rovers-FC-27-01-07?highlight=DONCASTER)
Few more here, but not as good: http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php/7952-Belle-Vue-Doncaster-Rovers-FC-20-01-07?highlight=DONCASTER (http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php/7952-Belle-Vue-Doncaster-Rovers-FC-20-01-07?highlight=DONCASTER)

It wouldn't seem so sad if something useful had been done with the land. It brought back many memories though.
Thanks :scarf:

That was my 28 Days Later report two posts up! Glad to see it's still there. :)
Some of those photos made it to the centre page of the Free Press shortly afterwards. My most famous moment!

RTID: what's happened to Sif? I haven't come across him, anywhere, for quite a long time now. Is he ok?? I hope so. He was a bloody good guy.
And thank you No 19. I had seen RTID's posts before - but that was years ago. I've bookmarked it this time :)
Thanks

A bad evening in 2003.

I had no issue with losing the title to Yeovil that season. They were a class apart as demonstrated the day they demolished us and won the title (had already won it I know).
