Whilst doing my genealogy I came across a name from the 1851 census and I can't quite make out the surname (see attached images - bottom name in big picture).
The transcript records the person as "Ann Acheltin". I believe the first name is "Ann"; however I can't find anything to do with a surname "Acheltin", and the first letter of the surname doesn't look like an "A" to me (see how the "A" looks in "Anne"). It might be two letters joined up?
Can anyone help? :s

Hi Wilts, is there an easy way to find out what clasps my grandad was entitled to on his Queens South Africa medal. I'm replacing his medals but can't remember if he had three or four clasps on it. I can Remember some but not sure of others. Thanks, Dave

If you have his service record then that will tell you, failing that there might be something in the records of the unit he served with at the time. If he was in a Yeomanry Unit their records are online here

Cheers Wilts. He was in the KOYLI for seven years from 1896 to 1903.
He then did another stint in WW1 training troops and ended a sergeant and was seconded to the RFC briefly.

Then you have a pretty good chance of finding his info Dave, the museum in Doncaster still hold a lot of KOLYI information. Have you tried searching the National Archives for his service record?

I've traced some of my family back to around 1770, although I am struggling to find where my great grandparents are buried, I'm assuming they are somwhere around the Goldthorpe area as the lived in Highgate lane Goldthorpe according to the 1911 census. I have discovered that my Great Great Grandmother is buried in a cemetery in Utah USA

Not far off Bob, converted to mormonism before emigrating out there with here husband, her two oldest sons were bas**rds, the oldest one being my Great Grandfather who stayed in this Country and married his wife and had at least 18 kids to my knowledge, all miners from the Goldthorpe area

I've not had any luck so far. I think that I might be able to find it by paying a months subscription to Ancestor.co.uk
I should be able to find him with a bit of luck. There is no facility on Genes reunited which I subscribe to at the minute. I have copies of his signing on form and his discharge but nothing in between. Good job I'm retired now.

We managed to get our family back to a butcher named Roebuck who lived in Wadworth in the early 19th Centuary. All that time and we've hardly moved.

Apologies he is featured on our site and is said to have both SA medals, the Queen's with the clasps Be (Belmont) Mr (Modder River) and Of (Orange Free State), presumably he would have the 1901 and 1902 clasps too? It is strange however that he doesn't appear on the Boer War Website, maybe they have not transcribed the KOYLI yet, but it is certainly worthwhile posting on their forum to check, they are the A-BW experts and its free.

Hi Wilts, that's great thanks.
I have bought copies of five of his medals including the KSA with two bars on 1901 & 1902.
I was trying to work the QSA bars out but just couldn't remember which they were. The Belmont one is ironic because he lived in Queen St. Balby and the next road along is Belmont Ave. I at least got Modder River and Orange Free State right. There is a firm on ebay that sells copies complete with whichever bars you want. If I don't see one with that combination I'll order one from them. Can I get you a beer on Saturday?
