Title: Dons
Post by: The Red Baron on March 01, 2015, 08:44:59 pm
I see that after a couple of narrow defeats the Dons were well beaten at Workington today.

Early doors yet, but P. 3 L. 3 isn't the start I was expecting from them.

Its not going to get much easier as we have Leigh up next too. Hopefully we will get that first win of the season sooner rather than later

It's all a bit worrying isn't it? There was a lot of confidence pre season; some good signings, and , probably unwisely looking at it now, some confident promises from the coach. Be a bloody good show if we get anything out of Leigh. I know we beat them last season but we don't do that very often.

I thought we'd beat Workington quite comfortably. To be thumped is pretty dispiriting.

It's hard to build cohesion in any team, but when don't know which players you can lend week after week how can you build a side?.
I know next to nothing about rugby but always follow how they have got on, they did really well last season, it seems looking from afar that they need their own group of players, and when they do lend players they need a longer term arrangement.

I thought a push for promotion wasn't out of the question, but losing heavily to Workington seems very disappointing, the loss to the Broncos not unexpected remembering i know very little.
The club is rebuilding every year getting stronger, may be it's just a bad start, Cooke seems to be doing a decent job, the link with Rovers surely will help both teams.

Bloody hard game this weekend though. Although we managed to beta them last season, turning over Leigh is not an easy task at all. If we manage it tomorrow, it'd be a very good sign indeed.

Ye Gods! Really?

Why couldn't he disallow a few of Leigh's efforts then?

He could have disallowed three quarters of them Bob and Leigh would have still won comfortably. Men against boys today. We need to sort things out or we'll be visiting Gloucester and Hemel Hempstead next season.

Lost 32-12 at Hunslet Hawks today. Looks like it is going to be a long season.

I thought the talk pre season was of going to for the Super league this season.

Baldwin won't be amused.

He envisaged 5/6 thousand fans supping 6 pints each in the stands.

Terrible result it seems they are the most in need of players under the 'Club Doncaster' banner.

Lost 14-16 to Batley today. Clearly an improvement but not enough for a first win.

Many thanks for that link Yargo! Enjoyed that. I've not seen it before. Sitting here now comparing that side in my head with those of the early and mid 70's.... Chalk and cheese eh?!

Cheers

All very disappointing and worrying indeed. Hard to see where the first win will come from. Hope it on sunday but we need to cut out the simple errors

I'm struggling to see where the rubbish performances have come from tbh. It's not like the entire squad upped and left close season is it? Yes, the dual reg players went back, but some pretty fair ones came in return. What's going on? It almost looks like there must have been some almighty row inside the club. (And that's not a hint. I am simply guessing from no knowledge whatsoever) I can't understand how good form and performances can suddenly become crap form and performances. HAve the squad fallen out with the coach or something?

To lose to Whitehaven says there are serious problems, last season they would have beat them.
Title: Re: Dons
Post by: eastender on May 24, 2015, 11:29:32 pm
With only 8 games to go they stand at played 14 lost 14.  :(

So it's quite possible that they could lose all 22 .

Can anyone remember if the old Dons that were ridiculed in the 70's and 80's ever went an whole season with out getting at least a draw .

I can see ''Another bloody Sunday part 2'' coming out of this season, not easy to maintain the results they got last season, he overachieved.
This season there just seems no way they can stop the plummet to bottom, i don't know much about The Dons but like to see them doing well.

I think that they have always managed at least four or more points.
Title: Re: Dons
Post by: The Red Baron on May 26, 2015, 04:50:17 pm
I seem to recall a season, around 1976 I think, where they won one and drew one. Their only win came in the penultimate game of the season when they beat Huddersfield by a couple of points.

Just had a look at the "another bloody Sunday" season 1979/80.

They finished bottom on 3pts having P26 W1 D1 L24.

In 1976/77 they finished bottom again on 2pts having P26 W1 D0 L25

They also finished bottom in 1974/75 and 1975/76 so i've stopped going back any further.

I think it was 76-77 that I was thinking of. The following season they did quite well and won a number of games.

Where did you find their records? I couldn't find a decent site on the net which had season by season tables.

That's great. Thank you. It was 76-77 I was thinking of. The following season the Dons won nine games. I even saw them win away for the first time - at Thrum Hall against Halifax.

Thought we played well again today , dominated for 55-60 mins . We just cant make our attacking play count.

On another point how good is it at Castle Park, enough staff, good beer and food all at a reasonable price . Today despite the result was a good experience

I hope the Dons play all their games at Castle Park.
The ground is better suited to the size of attendance they get also.

Lost 34-6 at Batley today, so any hope of winning at least one game this season is surely gone.

Is it just me, or have they performed worse since they parted company with Cooke?
Title: Re: Dons

They play 3rd bottom Hunslet at home on Sunday.
With Halifax (h) (4th) and Leigh (a) (2nd) their only other games , this Sunday is surely the last chance of getting any points at all never mind a win.  :(

I'm not fully sure how the next stage works. Presumably the Dons will be in the bottom 8 of their league when the split happens. So could they avoid relegation if they don't finish bottom of this new group?
In other words, it might not be curtains??

There could still be a chance of Super Leaague at the Keepmoat next year if Wakefield stay up, as they will be homeless by Christmas and are currently talking to other venues?????????? The irony being that their current home is Belle Vue.

The format of the Super 8s is below:

Strikes me that now would be a good time for the Dons to find some form.
