Title: Accountant
Post by: Filo on March 26, 2015, 09:22:00 am
Right, in the next two or three months in all likelihood I'll be going self employed, so does anyone have any accountant recomendations that won't charge the earth?

I would say that if you aren't doing anything particularly complex, you don't really need an accountant and it is probably an unnecessary cost.

Are you planning on being a sole trader or using an umbrella/Limited company?

I suppose it would be a sole trader, it's owner driver taxi driver, working for one of the bigger town companies. I had thought why do I need an accountant because if I use the green simplex accounts book and it's filled in properly the tax return would be pretty straightforward I imagine, but then again I've never done self employed before so I ask the questions and find out as much as I can before I decide wether to go ahead with it

What kind of contract would you have with them?

Is it them who have requested that you go self employed rather than work under an employment contract?

Thats the norm with the bigger operators in Town Jenny, thet take the bookings, the owner drivers pay a weekly Radio rent of about £80 and what you take is yours

I think it would be fairly straight forward to do your own accounts then Dave, certainly shouldn't be many complexities with those kind of arrangements.

There could be ways you could structure it to take home more of your money, but a lot would depend on the contract you have with them. I am guessing that if you are working for a taxi company you put their sticker on your car and you aren't free to pick and chose who you work for on a regular basis?

I do know a couple of drivers that work for different companies, sort of freelance, as long as they've got the relevent company's sticker on at the time and the council know that is n't a problem, those drivers use magnetic stickers for ease of change. On the accounting side of things I would imagine a simple ballance sheet for each week would suffice

Basically as Jenny said an aaccountant would be pointless for you as long as you know how to complete your tax returns. There's little point overcomplicating things.
