Title: John Doolan
Post by: Hitchin Exile on April 19, 2015, 07:23:01 pm
Wow
He certainly put a fair bit of girth on but he still got it.
Spun out some great longball passes today at legends game.
Had forgot what an assett he was in the middle of the field

Yep, obviously took up serious pie eating, but got through the 90 minutes, and sprayed some lovely passes around

Really enjoyed today. I laughed when I saw Doolan waddle out from the tunnel but my god he can look after a football.

Best moment was Paul Mayfield talking to the bench then realising his half was been attacked.

Disappointed Copps didn't speak.

When I first saw him today I thought "jeez he will play no more than 10 mins and its gonna be embarrassing at that.

How wrong could I be, a joy to watch he was and what a goal too. As for Stock pure genius, never wasted a pass.

I'd be asking stock to see if he fancied one more season to be fair! Havant and waterlooville ffs - he's way better than that!

Doolan was my man of the match, but there were some good performances from several players. Billy Sharp was class. I'd love him back at Donny.

Doolan was tremendous. Really great to see him. How many players have we had in that position since his time that could compare? Not enough.

Also thought Marples and Ryan were excellent.

What we would do for a Doolan type character in our team (minus the weight). Keeps it simple but so effective.

Really enjoyed today and was throughly entertained. It was nice to be able to watch the players who have made our last ten years one of the most successful periods in our clubs history.

Both my boy and I were smiling coming out of the ground which is the first time in a while after a game of football.

Sharp has lost a fair few pounds. Doolan certainly gained a few. Doolan definitely MOTM. Thought Tim Ryan very good. Warrington made several unreal saves. Stock sublime.

Today was all about why Rovers mean so much to me.
The memories of seasons past came flooding back, picking dad up to go to the match, seeing people you didnt really know on the pop side, but always said hello to as you went to your same spot every week.
Great memories,a great club, and great genuine supporters,we are not the biggest club around, but no one betters us.

Doolan certainly has not lost it. Still class with a football. Watching him today brought back a memory of that night when we beat Barnsley at OBV I think it was 4-0 when Paul Hart was their manager and he was sublime. Very enjoyable afternoon seeing players who have given me my best memories in 42 years watching the mighty Red & Whites.

Got to confess I missed a lot of years and never saw Doolan play.  We really could do with someone like him now.

Loved the game today, seeing so many greats from our halcyon days, not so long ago. We're light years from having that quality now.

Not sure it was all about quality although there was plenty of it about. The teams over the last 15 years had everything you need to be successful - quality, strength, speed, an iron will not to get beaten, a bit of luck when needed and a togetherness. Those players out there today all had a bit of all those qualities and that's why in my opinion we have had so many special times in the last 15 years.

Used to love watching John Doolan, he would never have won any medals for slimming, even in his pomp.
But when he played well, the Rovers played well.

I still think that Greg Blundell goal, away at Palace in the Cup was one of the best I've seen. And it was John Doolan who made it. A brilliant ball out of defence, slap into the stride of a full pelt Greg. BRR saw it too. do u agree mate?

Gutted I couldn't make it today, it doesn't surprise me regarding Doolan & Stock, both were total class & vital to our progress, would have loved to have seen Doolan one last time, as for Stocky, should have been alongside Wellens this season.

The League Cup when we were truly the pub team  :woot: I remember Blundells fab goal and grin, but not that it was Doolan's pass - you've still got the grey cells firing then Bob.

I think it was at Forest Green that Doolan made his first nervous bumbling appearance for us, but quickly became the cornerstone of that side.

Doolan is a class act. Surely would've played much higher than the lower leagues/non league if he'd been a bit more mobile when he was playing? Superb passer of the ball.

Warrington has dropped out of league football/retired way too early, Tim Ryan was brilliant, McCammon is a beast, and I must admit I wasn't expecting to see Jamie Price - I'd completely forgotten about him!

There's a video of that Blundell goal at Palace somewhere BRR. And you can see Doolan's pass that led up to it. That was the night I first thought 'We've got a good side here'. And we had!

Bob.

He topped it with the goal at Gigg Lane as we got going on that once-in-half-a-century run of 41 points from 45 in autumn 2003. I'd be amazed if anyone has ever hit a sweeter left foot volley in the fourth division of a national league.

I've spent the best part of an hour searching for that vid of Blundell at Palace in 2003. Give me a shout if you come across it.

I also liked how everyone wore whatever number they liked! So there were several number 9s etc.

But when he played well, the Rovers played well.
Absolutely spot on, and he could mix it as well

Just ask Stephen McPhail, Steve!  I think he still has 3 of Dools' studs lodged in his ankle.

Tim Ryan was brilliant

Still playing at non-league level (Buxton or somewhere) I believe.  Also to be found at the bar in the Ingram Arms every now and again.
