Was looking on the EPSN Top 50 Boxers of All Time list the other day. There was just ONE a British boxer on it.
Without looking, fight fans, who do you reckon it was?
-
Your mum ;)
-
Henry Cooper
-
I would say it has to be Henry Cooper. Surprised there aren't one or two more in the lighter weights.
-
Cooper's not in the top 50. Couldn't be anywhere near really since he was never a World Champ.
-
My favourite was Barry McGuigan..
-
Calzaghe, Steve Collins (not Brirish admittedly), Lennox and Naz are the best I've seen in 20 years of watching boxing.
-
All NO. You're all too focussed on the modern era.
-
John Conteh
-
No. Way back
-
Randolph Turpin
-
Nope
-
Bob Fitzsimmons
-
I'd argue it was William "Iron" Hague from Mexborough in the early 1900s. He was the first British Heaveyweight champion and trained by none other than my great great grandad Frank. I'm not sure ESPN know much about him though!

I was going to say William Hague too, but I was thinking of the other one.
-
If it is from way back then Bob Fitzsimmons.
-

He couldn't lay a glove on Tony Blair!
-
Bruce Woodcock
-
No all round.
I'm guessing William Hague would have needed to float like a butterfly to avoid getting t**tted at Wath Comp, but it's not him either.
-
I would have guessed Calzaghe....
-
Chris Ewbank
-
Sugar Boy Sweetie.
Or was that William Hague's fighting name?
-
Calzaghe probably ought to be there but he isn't.
-
My Grandads brother was a bare knuckle fighter, and challenged Iron Hague to a bare knuckle money fight when he was British Champion, Iron Hague decline the challenge, the pussy! :)
-
Has to be Ted 'the kid' Lewis.
-
Got it.
-
Not John " Jack" Broughton then ?
-
I have heard of Kid Lewis but he wasn't one I immediately thought of. He did fight at several different weights. Probably at his best as a welterweight, or light heavy, if you prefer.
-
There's a big difference between Welter and light heavyweight.
-
Sorry, you are quite right. I was mixing up my welters and cruisers!
-
Did he lose any fights
-
Did he lose any fights
According to the font of all knowledge Wiki he lost 41 fights
-
Filo
Aye. Out of about 250!
-
Here's the list
http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/greatest/featureVideo?page=greatest4150
Looks like it was compiled in 2007 given the comments about Bernard Hopkins coming out of retirement. Might explain why Calzaghe's not in there.

299 according to Wiki
-
299 fights in a 20 year career! Christ, that's one bout every 24 days for 20 years!
