Title: The Road to Wembley
Post by: Bentley Bullet on October 29, 2015, 12:00:01 pm
How about a brand new competition to see if any of us can predict their way right through to the FA cup final?

Here's all you have to do....

Rovers start their FA cup campaign against Stalybridge. All you have to do is predict the outcome of the tie by simply stating 'Rovers'  or 'Stalybridge' to win! If the tie is drawn your forecast is carried over for the replay until there is a winner.

The team that wins that tie will then be the themed team in the next round, and the contestants who got their prediction correct will qualify to forecast the outcome of the game the themed team is involved in......And so on and so forth until you fall by the wayside, or reach WEMBLEY!

There will be no new entrants allowed once the first game kicks off, or any time after throughout the competition, so make sure you enter before the first game.

Good Luck!

P.S.   The winner gets a weekend break for 2 with last years PvO Champion bobjimwilly in Barnsley..............The runner up gets a full week.

*Please note; This competition will run alongside the PvO and the unofficial prediction competition. Please continue to enter them as normal.

OK, I'll start seeing as it's my idea.

Rovers v Stalybridge;

League is more important
Fergie will play weak side
Title: Re: The Road to Wembley
Post by: IDM on October 29, 2015, 07:21:10 pm
Yes the league is more important but Fergie hasn't got the players/formation working right yet, so this will be an ideal game to get the squad into the shape and style that he wants.  He may not risk players carrying slight injuries but a strong side in this game is essential to get the league games won, IMHO of course.

If we were doing well in the league and with a settled side, then yes, pick more kids, but I don't think we can afford that..

No way will he play a weak side. He will put out what he believes to be the strongest available XI.

I don't know which is worse, ''die from smoke inhilation''?, ''or die from sewage inhilation''?, some would say i already am dying of the sewage one, as a lot of what comes out of my mouth, is a bit :turd:!.

Hopefully he will have also improved us even more as a side, both physically and mentally. Especially at dead ball situations.

I don't see a problem with betting 30 minutes before the start of the game. As far as I can see a 30 minute before kick -off rule is acceptable - unless someone objects for a legitimate reason.

IMO cant see any problem at all with either waiting till just before kick off - or in fact changing your mind at any time up to the kick off

All posts are timed anyway including the edits so if someone does change their mind for whatever reason the day / time they did so is clearly shown. I am sure someone COULD find a way to enter / change their entries but hey ... we are not playing for a £10 grand prize are we ... and in some Threads are playing for nowt at all !!

I've been hanging on not wanting to bet against us.
I hope that Stoke have a similar view to this game as we had against Scunthorpe but I can't see Mark Hughes letting this happen though.
I think that their work rate allied with better quality players will do for us on the day.
So it's STOKE for me but fingers crossed I'm wrong.

Rovers WIN, I can see in my minds eye, Mark Hughes stood outside his dugout shaking his head like he can't believe it, then covering his eyes with his hand, and putting his head down.
Then i see the ref blow the whistle, the managers shake hands. Then I see a load of fans with Black bank scarves twirling them round and round. The fans trying to carry Fergie away from the dugout, to try and chair him all around the ground, but some numbskull drops him, and he ''Has it away on his toes'' down the tunnel.
Bentley Bullet told me his 'Crystal ball' suppliers number, it was Dead vivid!

Nothing personal but I hope Palace win.
Man U couldn't even bother one season and have it low on their list of priorities until it's the only thing left.

Rooting for Palace for many many reasons ... but mainly its because Man U (as you say) could not be bothered to even enter this Competition one Season as they preferred a lucrative tour of the Far East - and now they are scrabbling around trying to win it.

Effin Lukaku !

Yep going with the Eagles too . I lost my dear old mum when she was young she loved them. I know the Palace fans along with the Man Citeh fns will be sucking the ball into the United net . However I think Martial, Lingard and Rashford too pacey for the Palace defense

They didn't enter because they were playing to become world club champions

They didn't enter because they were playing to become world club champions

That hasn't stopped other clubs entering the FA Cup in similar circumstances?

True including "them" in 2008 who managed to win the World Club but not the FA Cup

They came under a lot of pressure from the FA to represent English football in the World Club tournament and that was the deal they came up with.

So they opted out of a competition that had run since 1972 to enter one that never really got off the ground.
They couldn't win that but I'm sure that the break helped them win the league that season.

I know you know and you only did a typo but its 1872 of course

I can't remember but at what point was the world club tournament staged?  Manchester Utd could quite easily have fielded a reserve team (if they were permitted to) in the FA cup and then used their first team squad in later rounds?

Wasn't it the first ever tournament? I seem to remember matches against the likes of Necaxa and Vasco de Gama being screened live on terrestrial tv, it was meant to be a big deal and something to equate to the World Cup but for clubs, it just never turned out that way. I actually think fielding a reserve team in Round 3 would've been more disrespectful to the FA Cup than withdrawing altogether.

Do people realise there is another football league club which withdrew from the FA Cup well before MU, and because of potential fixture congestion? That club - Doncaster Rovers in 1923-24. We were expecting to play in the Midland League in season 1923-24 and were drawn at Home to Fryston Colliery in an FA Cup preliminary round. However at the last moment we were invited to play in the Football League Division 3 North when its size was increased to 22 clubs. Rovers may have felt that as a League club they should no longer have to play a preliminary match, but the reason from withdrawing from the competition was disruption of fixtures.

DRFC Trendsetters!

I believe AFC Bournemouth, or Boscombe Athletic as they were then known, did the same.

Just looked that up TRB - I hadn't realised. It was the same season as well - 1923-24 their first season as a league club in Div 3 South - so presumably they scratched for the same reason as Rovers. They were drawn against Portsea in a Preliminary round. Interestingly New Brighton, who were elected to Div3 N at the same time as Rovers, did play in the FA Cup, but their first match was a round later.
