I've just been reading an article on our former manager, in the Non-League Paper. Apparently, when he won us promotion in 1968-69, the chairman said: "You are a wonderful young man." When we were relegated the next season, the same chairman said:"You are f***ing useless!" Any idea who this intelligent chairman was? Hubert Bates?

Frank Wilson was the chairman when we went up. We went down 2 years later and I think Wilson had been removed by then.
Just checked - Wilson was chairman from 1967 to 1970 when Ben Bailey replaced him. Wilson remained on the board until 1971 when he resigned. Hubert Bates was chairman before Wilson and reverted to vice-chairman. He preferred to be the power behind the throne.
The quotes sound like Bates to me.

Cheers, RB! Poor old Bates got a lot of stick, I seem to remember. Wrongly assumed that LM was referring to him!

The second quotation doesn't sound like Frank Wilson. He was a good egg and JR had a lot of time for him.

Frank Wilson bankrolled the Panthers for years too. A good bloke.
