The thread on Ricardo Calder made me ask the question - how many other Rovers players have the names of a main river?
I am not counting generic things like Rob Gill, Stan/Darren Brook(e)s, Stuart Ford, or near misses like Chris Swa(i)le(s)
This is a test of world wide geography, and I have come up with 7, plus two totally obscure that I expect no-one to get. I am sure there must be more. Of course I have already given one big clue.................
-
Don Page
-
Lol. Sorry - I meant surnames!
I think there have been more than 7 Don's playing for us!
Edit: Maybe not - I can only find Don Page, Don O'Riordan and Don Peattie.
-
Todd River Australia
-
Paul Todd. Brilliant answer Swifty, and one I had missed even though I have been to Alice Springs and seen it (completely dry of course)!
So still 7 to get, plus the 2 hopelessly obscure pre WW2 ones.
-
It depends what you're counting. Chris Brown will count because there is 'Brown' river but there will be dozens of Brown rivers. Same for 'long' I imagine if we ever had a player called Long. (and other colours such as green - Paul Green)
-
Kilkenny, Murray, swan
-
Yep Brown River New Zealand - I had not counted that one either Copps. The number is increasing as I thought. There are also a Black River and Green River I had not counted
I think at least 5 of the 7 are very gettable.
-
Kilkenny, Murray, swan
Murray and Swan (both Austalian) were two I had swifty
Is there a Kilkenny River? Kilkenny is on the River Nore.
-

Don goodman ?

I think it's spelt both ways Dutch. Part of it has been 'canalised' (if that's a word!) and named the Lee Navigation. It flows into the Thames.

Paul Todd (Australia)
Carl Swan (Australia)
Alan Murray (Australia)

See everyone is having a great time on Google :)
No - these are off the top of my head. Aint started on Gurgle yet !
Reminds me of a mate I had at work years ago. Always setting questions usually trick questions. So one day (a long time ago you will see) he comes and says - hey - there are 5 current Premiership Players whose names are Birds - can you get them
OK - Alvin Martin for one .... ah ah he says There are 6 Premiership Footballers whose names are Birds - can you get them. So I went for it and got Alvin Martin Peacock and the other 3 I cant remember them now but was stuck on the 6th
Every hour he came back to see if I had cracked it and much as I tried (and I did try) I could not get the last one. Taunted me for the rest of the day and I carried it over to next day (as he kept saying you will kick yourself etc). Eventually on Day 2 I gave up and he laughed and said Efan Akukoo (spelling probably wrong) . He was right I did kick myself !
About a year later he got me again with so many things you find at a BBQ - I remember Cole (coal) being one and got the lot again except one. I gave up a lot earlier this time and was right to do so because the answer was Paulo Wonchope !

BST - brilliant.Might have guessed at your Nigerian origins........ But of course I couldn't find Rigoglioso. And I know Game of Thrones is filmed over here, and has been NI's single biggest economic boost for decades........so if we could just find out which River it really is......

I was just about to ask if there was a Harper river, beat me to it.

There are Thompson and Fraser Rivers in America. Although I can't remember any players with those names off the top of my head, they're fairly common names so I wouldn't be surprised if they're additional to the ones we've got so far.
-
The hardest part is thinking of players from the past but having done that inputting McIndoe River or Gilfillan River provides results almost every time.
-

We had a player called Eric Thompson in the early sixties, i dont remember him playing for the first team though.
-
Not sure we've had a Frazer but we've had several Thompsons. Jackie of the 46-47 team for instance.
-
:( :(If the rovers scouts had been any good in 1966/67 there would have been another Thompson playing for them.
-
I've lost track (and officially given up) but (Sean) Thornton River also there
-
just new I'd find the sneaky one you'd all miss
The Ryan River is a short but major tributary of the Lillooet River, running largely eastward approximately 42 km from its source on the eastern flank of the Pemberton Icefield before joining the Lillooet River in the area of Pemberton Meadows.
i meant john ryan as a player til i remembered the other "genuine" player

I thought that they called him Ernie Thompson but whatever his first name I'm sure that he played a game or two at centre half aged about 18. Looked a good prospect but let go.
-
Might as well join in !!!
River Martin ( John and Hugh ) flows through Blarney in Co Cork and is good for brown trout .
And from Scotland ...........Joshua Burn ! and the River Annan ( Richard , reserves only )
-
My speculative punt on fairly common surnames just got me thinking. How many players have ever played a first team game for the club?
Any idea, Dutch/RB et al?
That question opens up other avenues too:
- How many have played one game only (Mirsad Bubalovic, Chris Black etc.)? No doubt plenty in THAT season.
- How many players (not including loans) have had pro contracts with us but never played? (Hakan Hayrettin etc.)?
-

Mike
I can answer most of those for you but it will take a little time.
As for contracted players who never played, the best I can do is probably substitutes who never got on.
-
Thanks TRB. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it but if you would derive any sort of pleasure from the research it would be nice to see the results.
-
I will very definitely leave this to the Red Baron who is absolutely the best person to come up with answers.
But as a pure guess at the first question, covering Rovers Football League and Conference seasons only, I would estimate between 1000 and 1100 players, so randomly say 1066.
Anyone else want to guess?
-
I reckon a few more. I was thinking in the region of 1280.
-
Answers tomorrow morning folks.
-
I reckon around 1067.
-
1068
-

And more recently Ross Thompson.

Circa 2002? He never played for the first team.
Tyrone Thompson did though, around the same time.
