Shocking defence. Getting beat by a bunch of part timers. Don't deserve to go through, and if we do manage to scrape through, one of the big boys will give us a good pasting.  Taxi for 11 please.

What a shocking game. Embarrassing, frustrating to say the least. Just haven't got a clue what to do with the ball. too slow at going forward, can't get a decent cross in, for all the shots we've had, can't even get one on bloody target!. Absolute garbage !.

Too slow buildup
Poor passing
Abysmal defence
Too predictable with crosses
No imagination

Title: Re: Engxit?
Post by: IDM on June 27, 2016, 10:02:46 pm
First half was ok, played at good pace and we created chances.  Iceland took theirs well, but even at 1-2 if we had carried that energy into the second half we may have done better.

However the second half was abysmal.  The longer it went on, the worse it got - players lacked movement, ideas, and couldn't even do the simple things - summed up by Kane over hitting a free kick/cross in the 86th minute when we were 1-2 down.

It's not embarrassing, it's not even about being against Iceland, we were just shite in the second half...  I don't get why some of you are saying Iceland are a bad side, they are unbeaten in this tournament aren't they vs Austria, Hungary, Portugal and now England.

France, Germany, Italy all got better as their games went on.

England softened like a limp dick after a premature ejaculation.

Well done Iceland. Fully deserved to beat England, who were an embarrassment from start to finish. No passion. No skill. No urgency. No pride. Iceland wanted it. Had the better chances too. Better organized. Better drilled. Faster. Stronger.

English football might be better in the long term for this result.

Iceland have been my second team since after their first game. They may well do the French as well.

I still say we did OK first half but the second was not good enough.

The second half reminded me of a typical DRFC performance at the KM under Dickov..

Good on Iceland - just shows that a "lesser" team can over achieve if they work hard enough!

Iceland aren't a bad side - they were dreadful! It's to England's eternal shame that they couldn't cope with a team that would struggle to win a League 1 game most weekends!
I know we are in a hurry to get out of Europe but I didn't expect the football team to take it so literally.

No dispute with the result but doesn't disguise the fact that it was an appalling game between two dreadful teams. Iceland reminded me of Lincoln City under John Beck and it doesn't get worse than that. How they've got tp the last eight of a major tournament is akin to a miracle.

We never learned a single thing from the group stage...Despite the arguments on here we were hopeless from the minute we kicked off against Russia...We've got to find a manager not scared of reputations who has a plan of how he wants to play and picks squads to that system...
Title: Re: Engxit?
Post by: BillyStubbsTears on June 27, 2016, 11:59:25 pm
Wing Co

No, no NO!

No and f**king NO again!

It is not about the managers. We don't produce players with the intelligence to take on responsibility.

Ever!

In the past 50 years, we haven't ever produced a squad with more than a handful of players that an independent observer would envy.

We TELL ourselves that we produce world beaters. But they are not. They are mentally and technically limited grafters, who are exposed for what they are on a two-yearly basis.

With different managers. And the inevitable cry that "If only we had a better manager..."

Capello was one of the finest managers of his generation. He had one of the best win percentages of any England manager in history. But that couldn't take us further than humiliation against the first decent side we played. Because he was playing with a shit hand.

It is NOT the fault of the managers. (Even though this one was particularly inept.) No manager on earth could make England competitive, because the fault is with a system that produces mediocrity and calls it genius.

It will not change until people stop buying into that myth and demand a root and branch revolution in the structure of our game.

I'm stunned that we can be that bad. For successive tournaments we've seen the players start off reasonably but then be seemingly overwhelmed with fear.

I don't know why this should be but all common sense and logic seems to be abandoned when determining the strategy to get through a tournament.

The thing is, there's genuine talent that's being wasted.

Post by: Sammy Chung was King on June 28, 2016, 03:19:17 am
Iceland's manager, tactically outsmarted him. He doubled up on the wing backs, gave each player a simple job, and they did it.
England from 1-11, nobody performed. This group of under achievers, will be being fawned over in a few months time. People thinking they are not as good as them. I tell you something if you are not as good as this shower, you must be bad.
Iceland, played a men's game, we had 'Pretend-to be's, in our side. Against any side, you have to compete first of all, then you can show you're skills. I have never seen a team cower under the pressure like that, we have lost games before, but i think that's the worst i have ever seen!.

Iceland, were never threatened, they got their goals, and did what was needed to win. Two simple goals, not dazzling skill undid us. If you were playing sunday league football, or any level, you wouldn't be happy with those goals.
We have a major problem in this country, that everything we do, we think is the best, but reality is very sobering!.

I was fortunate to see us win in '66 and look like we might retain the WC 4 years later

Since then we have merely flirted with becoming of the big boys again ! That's a couple of times of trying to be on a par with Germany and Italy who when they have "average" Teams still give their fans a show and something to give them pride and promise going forward

I resign myself to the fact that I will never see us win any trophy of significance in my lifetime - and indeed I am a Club before Country man more and more as the years roll by.

P.S. I wonder what that kid on the top of the Clay Lane single decker feels this morning - oh and wait for the first Iceland shop to be firebombed somewhere ! Netto will probably beat England next with an 11 selected from their 15 stores nationwide

The MOTD analysis was pretty good, along the same lines as what BST said above. The England side looked like kids playing with their ipods plugged in. It wasn't a "team", there was little engagement between them, over paid office workers more engaged with Facebook than the job in hand.

Whilst we haven't been as bad as that, it's not disimilar to where Rovers have been lacking over the last few seasons. We need a spine of mesters in the side, England and Rovers.

The England team is a symptom of a wider malaise in the football industry here;
We get the England football team we deserve | David Conn | Opinion | The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/jun/28/england-football-team-we-deserve)

Because we never look to sort out the structure in any meaningful way, we will continue to fail, and continue to be surprised when we do.

Too many snouts in the trough, too many prepared to be deluded at a false promise, and not enough grey matter to even see it.

Nutshell!

Title: Re: Engxit?
Post by: Sammy Chung was King on June 29, 2016, 01:30:16 am
Every month, all through the season, the squad should have a training day, or couple of days. The problems start way down the system, not being learned to play under pressure.
Foreign sides, pass to players with opposition close to them, because they trust each other on the ball.
Control of a ball is a given, they are already working out the next move, our players are still thinking 'Can i control this'. That is why we cannot play good football at high speed.

In the premier league, if they lose it, they get the ball back very quickly. But in international football, you lose the ball, and it very rarely comes straight back.
The coaching system needs to be learned properly, then they can learn the players how to play. Money needs to be restricted until players achieve something.
They are throwing money at young kids, many who have never seen a lot of money. And they expect them to retain ambition to do well, unfortunately many think they have already made it, before the international stage.
