Am doing the TransPennie Ale Trail shortly, anyone done it?
I understand in a few stops there is a choice of pubs any recommendations?
-
I'll ask my son-in-laws that have both done it I think.
I also know a lass in Bury that's also in Camra, I'll try to ask her.

Have you read this ?

Pick your starting point and GO. Don't try to leap the narrow Lock at Marsden though - its frowned upon
Also check out CAMRA - What Pub - a font of knowledge !

What??
There's an official Transpennine Real ale trail?
Back in the late 70s was at Liverpool University.
Me and a mate always took our time going back, whether via Sheffield and Manchester Piccadilly, or via Leeds and Manchester Victoria.
A quickie in the Leopard or Corner pin, and we were off.
And they were proper trains then, classic Transpennine DMUs, or even serious locos on Newcastle to Liverpool turns.
Not so clever spending a night at Man Vic though.

Oh yes ... it was a niche thing to do till Os Clark and James May went on the rails and did it. Good entertainment and dedicated to Real Ale and its drinkers
The Pubs flourished and made a lot of money I suspect but of late it has been hijacked at Weekends by all sorts of people who drink anything they want and unfortunately for the locals have been urinating in the streets and as I alluded to trying to swim in the Canals and trying to jump Locks on the Narrow Canals
Its got so popular now that Police have to patrol each Weekend because people get off the trains and sit by the Canals between the Stations and the Pubs and leave glasses and bottles and litter everywhere
Found the Look North piece on Youtube and the James May thing is on there too as is a loony jumping the Canal with snow and ice on the ground

Well I will give the canal jumping a miss with my knees.

Well I will give the canal jumping a miss with my knees.
You could always just part the waters

Have a go ... don't RUSH it though or you could be a Basket Case ...

You could always just part the waters
I think the part would be the first 3 foot and then land in it.

Let us know how you get on please (with the Trip not the water parting!) as I for one would be interested. If you look at the CAMRA WhatPub site though it looks like there are 7 or 8 Real Ale places just in Marsden !

Did it last year, as a return to my college stomping ground in Huddersfield and it was a little bit disappointing to find a crowd following you from every train to every pub. Marsden is a great little real ale town. We started from the Station Buffet in Stalybridge and went as far as Batley and then back to Hudds for a night out.

I've done many an Rail Ale Trail now but still never attempted this one due to the fact that it's apparently so busy all of the time. If you are interested in any of the other ones that I have done I am happy to send you the details if you PM me your email address!

I find it hard to even get out of 'udders what with a Pub at each end of the Platform and of course The Globe
I went to Real Ale Festival at the Sikh Meeting House which was ok but moving to The Globe was MUCH better - what a place

Cheers Donnywolf, not seen the camra app before and I think myself a real ale drinker.

Glad to help .... have you joined CAMRA ?
Its about £23 but you get £20 of Wetherspoons Vouchers giving you 50 p a Pint off. You get in most of the Festivals for nowt and there are loads of other benefits which you can see on their Website
I had a 2 week Hol last year at £960 but got 10% off so £96 back - and one good thing about being over 60 is that to join its only £16 - so I am £4 up as soon as the Post arrives !
Enjoy the What Pub Site. Its great for filtering Pubs .... say for finding Dog Friendly Pubs by ticking that box then Evening Meals ... well you get the picture
Enjoy the trip !

It was good, the weather helped of course.
The only thing with it is, when you get somewhere nice and you are settled it is time to go some where else. That might have been our grill up though.
Marsden seeing a hundred people steaming down the hill towards the pub is a sight to behold.
-
.... A GREAT sight to behold for the Landlord of the first Pub no doubt
Thanks for the update ... will have to do it soon !
Cheers DW
