A terrorist gunman killed 80 people and wounded scores when he drove a heavy truck at high speed into a crowd watching Bastille Day fireworks in the French Riviera city of Nice late on Thursday.
The driver was shot dead after barrelling the truck two kilometres (1.3 miles) through the festive crowd on the palm-lined Promenade des Anglais, sending hundreds fleeing in terror and leaving the area strewn with bodies.
Authorities said they found identity papers belonging to a 31-year-old French-Tunisian citizen in the truck, as well as "guns" and "larger weapons".

Terrible once again. The French seem to be having a bad time. Just makes you wonder what and where next.

Absolutely appalling.

I lived near Nice and still read Nice Matin online .In this morning's edition they report that a lawyer who defended him in March this year after a road rage incident considers him to be 'normal' . No signs of being radicalised , no outward signs of religious fervor , neither in dress style not did he wear a beard . He seemed aloof , cold , detached . He clearly hated the police and the establishment says the lawyer .
He could be just crazy of course or very high on drugs .Might that not be a better conclusion in fact, rather than finding he is another jihadist. Nice was such a peaceful , beautiful city !

I heard today that IS have claimed responsibility for this atrocity.

I think that was always predictable, whether true or not. That a hate fuelled cell wants to step forward and claim responsibility for such an abhorrent act of senseless destruction sums up everything that's wrong with the world. It feels a worrying place to be at the moment.
That could have been any one of us out celebrating at an event like that with our friends and families. It's disgusting, incomprehensible and so so sad.

It sounds like the man was unhinged. His brother said he was an athiest. The trouble is it's getting to the point where the bas**rds don't have to lift a finger, all they have to do is say they did it. By all accounts he was a nasty bas**rd.
