Title: Williams and Butler
Post by: The Red Baron on November 16, 2016, 12:50:37 pm
According to Liam Hoden Andy Butler is doubtful for Saturday after aggravating a neck injury at Exeter.

Andy Williams has had food poisoning and hasn't been able to do rehab for a few days. They were targeting a return in the Stevenage game but that might have to go back a week. (Actually Plymouth is the one we could really do with him back for!)

No point in rushing them back.  Too risky.  We should have enough defenders to give Butler a rest and Williams - we are accumulating points without him, so one more isn't the end of the world..

We don't have a good record of rushing centre-backs back from neck injuries.....

Not how i wanted it to happen but it gives us an opportunity to find another partnership that might not leak as many goals. I know he has been our stability back there but his lack of pace worries me.

Radio Sheffield just said that Butler is back in full training, and also that DF said that Williams is likely to be back for Saturdays match with Hartlepool.

Hmmm...

I still wouldn't want to rush them back.

Keep Hartlepool guessing what our line up might be maybe?

Talking of Hartlepool, does the corporal still play for them?

No way will Williams be back for Saturday. Stevenage or Plymouth probably.

Jones wasn't risked for the last game but could play some part against us as he is almost fit. I wouldn't risk either to start the game let's make sure we don't cause an additional injury. Both are important players in my opinion Williams more than Butler.
The problem is Butler has a spirit about him that the other centre halves don't but his lack of pace worries me. If Alcock was two or three inches taller he could have made a really good centre back. He has changed my mind over the time he has been with us.
He is a really useful squad player with the positions he can play and his attitude. He is a reliable defender in most games.

Surely the reason that all our players are here is that they are "missing" something from their make up.
If Butler had more pace, if Allcock was a bit taller, if Williams took more of his chances etc they would be playing at a higher level.
In the case of Butler i feel that too many people cite his "lack of pace" as a reason for him being a problem but his heading and tackling ability and his undoubted warrior attitude make him a big attribute.
