Title: Penalties
Post by: Filo on December 10, 2016, 11:04:06 pm
We've missed 5 penalties and lost 2 shoot outs, something needs to be done about our poor penalty taking!

Forget about the Penalty shoot out's , because the're a Lottery anyway.

I'd be more concerned about the amount we give away, 3 in the last 5 League games .

I still trust Mandeville with the Pennos. He had the keeper going the wrong way but just put too much on it. He'll learn from it.

I said a while ago, on here, that I have a stinking feeling these missed penalties will haunt us come May ..... and we've missed a few more since then. On paper you'd back a player in the mould of Rowe or Copps to be a penalty specialist.

The goal is 12 yards away, just hit the thing as hard as you can at about chest/neck hieght, the keeper nine times out of ten has already dived low, so won't get anywhere near the ball

Mandeville hasn't missed enough to concern me.

I was worried until we found success with him.

Bayer Leverkusen, I think, have missed five out of five or something similar this season, so you aren't the only team having the same frustrations.

So it's official, rovers are now a "you" instead of an "us/we".   Not that this is a surprise. .

Although he missed one yesterday, I trust Mandeville.

I have faith that Mandeville won't miss another one. He tried to make sure it was right in the corner even the best miss them. There's no doubt along with our defending at times the penalties missed have cost us.
As it was the miss by Mandeville the game was near enough done so it wasn't really one that cost us points.

Thats alright for your first few pens, but once your the regular taker,it does'nt take opponent keepers long to learn it's what you do and they half prepare for a blaster. When Pearce walked up to take Englands next penalty in Italia 90,I shouted NO!!!!! in frustration,he'll blast it down the middle and Illgner is likely to know it!On a side note,Pearce was  an hero to come back and take a pen in euro 96,Legend.

How many open play penalties have we had this season now? It's way more than we ever normally get after a full season of fixtures. Without doing the research, how many have we scored and missed?

All competitions, 5 scored, 5 missed I think

Scored:Mandeville 3, Rowe 2
Missed: Wiliams, Marquis, Rowe 2 and Mandeville

I'm guessing we've had 12 and missed 6...ish. Normally a sign of a good team when players attack the box and keeping the ball on the deck.

An area of weakness though is the lack of goals scored with shots from around the edge of the box. Our shooting rate, and quality of shooting, must be quite low.

We don't seem to have  Bennett/Duffy/Cotterill/Forrester type players willing to have a pop from distance.

I don't know how it looks now (probably not dramatically different) but a couple of weeks back we had the best goals to shots ratio in the league so not bad quality of shooting at all. It sometimes feels that way when we get so much of the build-up play right but don't manage to create a shooting opportunity.

Marquis and Rowe only missed one but they didnt get chance to take another one either.
I dont include Williams (who also only missed one this season) because he missed one last season too.
