Title: Football League Home and Away form
Post by: Dutch Uncle on December 12, 2016, 02:52:54 pm
A couple of years ago I wrote an article (Fanzine Issue nr 77) talking about the success of away sides in the Premier and Football League increasing over time, based on data back to 1957-58 when regionalised third Divisions were replaced by Divisions 3 and 4. In the 1950's Home sides had about a 30% greater chance of winning a match than away sides, and by 2015 this had gradually reduced to about 11% (attached graph shows)

One Division in one season stood out - 2007-08 in Football League 2 (fourth tier) when away sides nearly won as many matches as home teams (208 away wins to 216 home wins)- and this was the only season when this was at all close (second closest was a differential of 35).

After last weeks results there have been 87 home wins and 89 away wins so far in League 2. A long way to go, but there would appear to be a chance of a football league first this season.

All this in a season where Rovers have (so far) rediscovered strong home form!
