Thousands take to streets after government passes emergency ordinance that critics say will help corrupt politicians escape justice
Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in Romania to protest against an emergency ordinance passed on Tuesday night that decriminalises some offences, including official misconduct in cases where the financial damage is less than 200,000 lei (£38,000).
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/feb/01/romanians-protests-emergency-law-prisoner-pardons-corruption
In the article they did not say that 2 nights ago were 80.000 people to protest in the whole country, and last night were over 300.000 people (150.000 only in Bucharest).

It's possible to have another revolution in this country after 1989.
Officially and sadly, Romania now became a corrupt country where anyone can steal.
-
Very Sad to see, Lets see if the Romanians here bring it to us and hold Demonstrations as other nationals have in the past, where WE in the UK can do nothing about it, it is a Sovereign Matter
-
I notice though that the EU have condemned the action by the Romanian government. Some shocking scenes of Police brutality on the news last night as well.
-
The government acted against people. Romanian government under the Social Democrats (PSD) has only been in office a few weeks after bouncing back in elections on 11 December.
Now Germany, France, USA and other 3-4 countries told to Romanian government to retire the 2 ordinance if we want to have relations with them. Even the Romanian President is now against the government.
Demonstrations were hold in London, Paris, Munich, Leeds, Bruxelles and other cities.
-
Watch the Ruskies jump on the bandwagon
-
For the third night in a row, demonstrations will be held in every city. Now are 10.000 people in Bucharest, and other 10-15.000 in other cities...and is just the beginning of the night...
L.e. At 7:47 pm (local our) there ore more than 30.000 people in Bucharest and other 50-55.000 in other cities.
L.E. Over 190.000 people in the entire country at 9:21 pm
-
And when you get properly irritated, you guys really don't take prisoners. If I was the guy behind this little scheme, I'd be watching things very carefully indeed. We all know what happened to the last guy who irritated Romania - and he really was watching closely too.
It's all such a shame. I really, really like Romania a lot. A proper beltingly good place. I hope everything comes through safely.

220.000 people were last night to protest against government.
The government told that they refuses to withdraw corruption pardon and the entire country is furious about that...sadly it's a possibility to start a new revolution

Bloody hell DMC. That's some crowd. What's the building? It doesn't look like that vast thing at the end of the main avenue that Ceausescu destroyed half of Bucuresti to build
Better be careful though mate. I see that's Russia Today doing the broadcasting. Their Lords and masters don't seem to like velvet revolutions do they?
Cheers

That is the Presidential Palace where Ceacescu had to eventually run from. Seems the cause is a good one and I can't understand why they set such a low ceiling on it .
Stay safe , better still try and get over here as soon as you can
-
For the 4 night in a row over 300.000 people protested against government.

The building that Ceausescu destroyed a part of Bucharest to build is called Casa Poporului (People's House - ironically, no?).
Thank you for the nice thoughts, mates. Government will not only destroy the future of the people from this country, but they will destroy the future of this country.
However, I wanted to return in in UK in the next 2-3-4 months and I managed to gather some money for this. I have 70-75% of what I need to stay there for 2-3 months (rent+food) until I find a job. Here the wages are small, life is hard and now the corruption is legal (thanks to our government).
-
A nice piece in the British press for you DMC. I see there is a court judgement expected on Tuesday that could stop it?

Nobody knows for sure. The President and the people tries to stop what the government wants, but it's hard.
-
Apparently a Romanian protest in Doncaster today. Is it related?
-
Dont worry lads, at least this time they can all hop on a bus and go to 28 different countries if they want.
Best leave as quick as possible.
-
Tonight 180.000 people in Bucharest and in total over 330.000 people protested. The government decided that tomorrow will talk about this and there are some chance that the two ordinance will be cancelled
This morning at 11 am, almost 7.000 kids protested government...the adults protested after 2 pm
Apparently a Romanian protest in Doncaster today. Is it related?
Yes, they protested against our government.
-
Apparently a Romanian protest in Doncaster today. Is it related?
Nope, they were arguing for not getting free housing and a car to drive around with three in it for free
-
Ha! I thought that building isn't the one at the end of the main street. It's not. That one is the Palace of the Parliament. That's the one Ceaucescu flattened half of Bucharest to build. I thought that is where you guys have demos DMC? There's that huge great open space in front of it just ready made for huge crowds.
And if anybody remembers, it's the one where Clarkson and May roared up and down making extreme noises through the tunnels underneath the place.
I see the government have backed down DMC. Be interesting to see what they do in 12 months time. They're hardly likely to simply abandon the idea. Governments don't do that. They retreat when they have to - and then attack from a different angle later. When they don't retreat is when things go badly. We had an example of that here with Mrs Thatcher. Her refusal to retreat cost her her job. Same with that fat slob in Ukraine. Your guys seem to have learned the lesson. But they won't give up on the idea though.

Romania: government retracts controversial decree after protests
Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu announces repeal of law that would have watered down fight against corruption
“We’ll hold an extraordinary meeting on Sunday to repeal the decree, withdraw, cancel it … and find a legal way to make sure it does not take effect,” Grindeanu said in a televised speech.

I know that episode but I stopped watching Top Gear without them as presenters

Congratulations DMC, people power in action.
And to those people who have been saying recently 'why bother to demonstrate it wont do any good' - it did in Romania.
-
Not every time people win against the government. They thought that people will accept their decision and nobody will care, that wasn't the case, the entire country mobilized against government. Will have to wait and see if we changed something or the government will continue with their lies.
Only Friday I had the opportunity to go to protest, the other days I worked until 11 pm
-
Officially the decree was cancelled but the government disn't resign as the people want, so 250.000 people protested in Bucharest and another 250.000 people in other cities.
-
I bet Frosty is loving these crowd figures.
-
Over 600.000 people in the entire country tonight...nobody trust the government anymore
-
If I was that Prime Minister I'd be thinking about resigning - for my own safety. The precedents are not good.

Romania protests continue despite repeal of corruption decree
Prime minister Sorin Grindeanu refuses to step down despite biggest outpouring of public anger since toppling of Ceaușescu

Selby is all that shite necessary on what is an important development in Europe. Look I get it you don't feel European that's OK but quite a few do worry about one of our fans safety and anti corruption in his country. Do you never go anywhere or care about anywhere , do you believe we won the war single - handedly too ?
See you drew me out too in thinking you are a pillock.

Romania protests enter 13th day with calls for government of 'thieves' to resign

Hoola it is not hard with people like you who are all modern touchy feely, and think they know it all.
After all you have been preaching to us on here for quite some time now.
No I will not fall to your level and disrespect you old boy, as I do not know you, and some may think you are not a pillock, which seems to be the word of the moment.
-
"I won't disrespect you but I'll call you a pillock in a roundabout way".
-
Selby makes Romania look like the Garden of Eden.
-
Iberian,do you think there will be any good cheap property over there in about 18 months time,or Greece maybe you dont have to pay tax there.
Your lot took the hit recently, but would not discount another bite there again or Italy perhaps.
If your favourite euro goes tits up,which is more than likely(the big hitters in London may see to that, lots of lubly jubly for them to be had)we just might look like the land of milk and honey.
Toodly pip.

After 2 years and a half, the romanian people had the chance to vote against the corruption in a referendum. Yesterday, when it was the European Parliament elections, it was organized this referendum and almost 90% of the voters chose to vote against the corruption.
Today, we got the biggest news possible. The man who wanted to send Romania back in the communist period was condemned and was arrested :woohoo:
