Here is a question who can name all the pubs that was seen in that footage ,in the correct order from the start.
Iam sure I saw 6 ?
There is also a unseen dance scene club that was lurking down one of the side streets ,extra point for its name.
-
I only got Sun Inn The Grove - Three Horse Shoes - White Swan I cannot remember what the Restaurant near The Grove was. Dance place ? nah got me, nothing springs to mind but I am not from West of Donny
-
Sun Inn
(York Bar WMC not shown on film)
Grove
Three Horseshoes
Toby Jug
White Swan
That's only 5 - what am I missing?
Dance club would be Warehouse I guess but that was clearly visible

I'd go along with that Muttley.

Was the Toby jug not before the three horse shoes ?
The three horse shoes ,was that use the rear enterance only pub?
Your correct about the warehouse BYO ,used to be a London double decker bus that went round town after kicking out time letting dance minded fall onto it and drop them at the door.
The music was bang on in there ,but I have never taken a drug in my life so I was never on the same level as 99.9% of the punters back then.
Once had to knock a pusher out ,who kept on saying I must try what ever he had that he was trying to push onto me .i should have stuck the boot in too as never be so offended in my life after telling fcuk off 3 times.
-
Toby Jug was after 3 Horsehoes if coming into town.
The Toby Jug did at one time have a sign saying "Please use the rear entrance"...it was a gay bar at the time!
-
I know they was very close together ,just that I thought the three horse shoes was a gay bar.
Out of all those pubs mentioned how many are still open today or how many are local curry houses.
Is the warehouse club still going > spoke to many brits from all across of north of England who raved about the place ,and be first question they asked when I told them I was from donny.
-
All still there except Toby Jug is now Halfords and the Warehouse has long since been deserted.
-
My local in cantley was the paddock pub,and it was a well run and most popular pub in cantley when Doug and Chris were landlord/ landlady of pub.
When rovers were in the shit, they had numerous race nights there and recall having a really good chin wag with Kerry Dixon about his Chelsea days .
£ draw on a Sunday would easy reach £1000 in totall payout payments.
Once Doug and Chris left it went down hill very quick with various owners or bar managers.
Now it's shut down after been made into a morrisons for a short time.

You should have taken him up on the offer, might have opened your mind.
I went there a lot in the mid to late nineties, took some mind bending shit that opened my up my mind and ears and brought music alive in ways I'd never imagine or could fully explain.
The 80s and 90s were brilliant for underground music and drugs and it's anti establishment theme struck a chord with me.
I no longer dabble in that stuff anymore and haven't done for many years but that vibe lives strong within me and makes me what I am today.
It was a recreational and social thing for us, but it was a weekend thing and never got in the way of our Monday to Friday duties. We didn't harm anyone and weren't anti social with it either, don't tar people like me as "users". We were far too cool and switched on to go that way.
-
Nudga I have allways had a non smoking and non drugs policy .
As you stated back then eveyone was dropping tablets apart from me it seemed.it got to the point where I would never buy pints anymore and stuck to bottled pils as I knew that tablets were getting dropped into whoevers drinks left right and centre.
I recall going to a stone roses gig at speak island in the very late 1980s.must have been more than 20,000 fans there and only one that had not taken anything.
I could never separate who was a social drug taker or who had more serious issues with the stuff so just placed you all in the same bracket and kept strangers at arms length.
For sure a lot of me mates were taking tablets and they would come back down to earth by Monday and a lot more less loving.

When did the Underground, in Bowers Fold, stop being the pub for gays?
Cheers
BobG
-
Not sure Bob - can remember as a young un it was almost a sport at one time going for a battle with patrons of Underground.
We'd be in Castle or Bull and next minute you'd be on your own as everyone had gone to Bowers Fold
-
It's been empty since being gay became more socially acceptable and they all came out.
-
Never knew that that was a gay bar , I even dropped in for a drink one Saturday night when police were on our tails.
Iam sure the landlord back then was known as scotch harry ? Who later went onto kings head .
-
Was this pub called The Silver Link back in the 70s?
-
Great vid. Has anyone seen the blsck and white one. Think its from the 50s
-
Was this pub called The Silver Link back in the 70s?
I think - you are correct.
-
Sorry. I don't agree Bally :)
I'm a child of the 70's. The reason I know about the Underground is because a mate of mine from school took the wind right out of my sails one day. He announced he had something important to tell me. Then he said he was gay. Good God! Anyway, he ended up taking me to the Underground. After the initial 'backs against the wall' moment, it was actually pretty good. The people in there were very pleasant and nobody was pushy. As he and I left Danum in 1974 and we met up when we were back from uni, he told me his news sometime between 74-and 78. And it was definitely the Underground he took me to!
Wasn't Silver Link down by Owen Owens?
Cheers
Bob

Silver Link was in Bradford Row, now Lazarus Court. It then became the Kings Head and was Flairs the last time I went down there.
-
On the famous byo warehouse theme.
Our lass a sheffielder only knew of Doncaster because of that place! Her and many others would head there after working the bars and clubs of sheff.
Had some top names guest there!
It was at the time one of the few places up north for that scene.
-
Bradford row, downstairs turn left or right depending on your persuasion or through the curtain or not :)
-
Yes, the Underground was the place you didn't go in back in the 70s. Being a pubspotter, it was the only Town centre pub we didn't tick off our list.
The other gay place (not that gay meant the same then) was the Society Club.
I only know this as I worked as a waiter in the Swiss Chalet from 73-76 which was close by.
There was a bit of a rash of Swiss places around Donny as it became cosmopolitan and sophisticated.

I would too but as York Bar WMC got a mention I would also add in :
SYPTE Social Club just after Toby Jug - fleeting glimpse
Trades & Labour Club clearly seen after Multi Storey and relocated now of course into Frenchgate Centre
Someone put me out of my misery. What was the Pub called at Eastern end of St Georges Church - now a Saddlery. It too was a reputed "Gay" Pub.
Ye Olde .... I think makes me half way there but we will have won promo before I get the rest !

Do you mean the Dockin Inn Tavern Wolfy?
The White Hart was then further on, on the right before you got to the Cheshire Cheese.
-
Looking at that picture Wolfy I'm sure that it was the Dockin Hill Tavern until the 70s at least but my memory could be wrong. I did leave Donny in 1977.

Wolfie, It was called The Crown
-
Don't think this is a gay thing but if memory serves me correctly The Old Crown was the last pub in central Donny which had outdoor urinals with no roof.

Straying very far off topic but I had a rather funny experience at a similar bar last week. Was meeting some mates after work on the Strand, they were at the pub at one end but I was on my way in towards Charing Cross. I figured I'd have about 15 minutes before our restaurant reservation so messaged to see if they could come to a pub closer that we could have a swift pint before our meal. They replied saying "Meet us at Halfway to Heaven. Closest pub to the restaurant and plenty of time to squeeze one in".
In a bit of a rush, I went in and ordered a round, it wasn't until I'd had my first sip that I realised that there wasn't a very even male/female ratio. In fact there wasn't a ratio at all. What there was were a lot of rainbow decorations. And some pretty lively disco music for 7pm on a Wednesday.
Stitched up well and proper but I feel like I got the last laugh - the beer was cheap, it's always a nice boost to the ego to get some admiring glances and I'm actually a big fan of Donna Summer's music.
-

Wasn't SYPTE social also the Navy club at one time?
-

No it was The Old Crown ... I posted a photo earlier and said I was answering " my own question"
I then signed out and of course the Photo (I assume) went missing
-
And there i was thinking "Beethams" was the gay pub in Donny. No wonder i never copped off.
-
Oi I was a regular in Beethams
-
I bought my first ever quarter ounce in Beethams.......Eight quid it cost!

Silver Link has been dealt with
You are probably thinking of The Blue Bell opposite what was Owen and Owen ? Slightly down an alley to enter it - miss that one
Also a narrow passageway to Nags Head opposite what you may remember as Hodgson and Hepworth seen in this article
http://www.thornegazette.co.uk/news/picture-gallery-doncaster-s-long-lost-pubs-1-7557715
Yorkist also between the 2 - now Travel Agent (Thomas Cook maybe)
Good if not comprehensive list here

-
Don't forget the Elephant Hotel as well Wolfy.
-
Mate of mine like an idiot sparked up a joint in Beethams only to get nicked almost straight away (seem to recall Cliff the landlord was ex drugs squad) when questioned who else had been smoking it my mate kept shtum insisting it was only him he was then asked how long he had been wearing lipstick

Had forgotten the Nags Head still sports its name and the 2 masonry Nags Heads . Hope they are secure ! Oh yes those horses have bolted !
-
The Nags Head was where Kevin Keegan used to drink. You could sometimes see him in there on a Saturday night after he'd played at Anfield.

Bowers Fold place was latterly the Wellington Vaults wasn't it?
I've got a vague recollection of stumbling in there to knock out some karaoke at some point. No idea if it was still generally a gay bar at the time; I don't recall there being any overt signs (rainbows, camp barmen, blokes with big 'taches and leather hats).
I never went in the Warehouse and wish I had given it a try at some point just to see what it was like but as per Oslo, I've never been into drugs. Had the odd dab of speed now and then but never a pill-head.
-
The Wellington was the pub demolished when Bowers Fold was just a ginnel. That opened up a bit of space for the shops.
Stamp Corner was in a little shop in there as well before moving to Scott Lane.
-
The Underground in Bowers Fold later became Wellington Vaults.
-
Wellington Vaults was always full of skinheads when I started drinking in Town in mid 80s
-
The Underground in Bowers Fold later became Wellington Vaults.
Probably renamed in honour if you can call it that of where the old Wellington was.

I thought it was the Wellington Vaults and later became the Underground

It was the underground when it opened probably about 1964/5 ish.

I never knew old Wellygogs was actually named after somewhere!

PS Where is he? Not seen him for a little while.
