Post by: Donnywolf on April 06, 2017, 02:39:21 pm

I would have thought the penalty re-take would have been quite a common/known rule. Strange one.

His showing at Scunny in 2009 (Sharp's first goal for us, two red cards and a last minute penalty to cost us the win) has always stayed with me. Stroud is an awful ref and always has been, another damning indictment of the "assessor" system.

What about his 3 sidekicks, couldn't they have put him straight.

In all my years of playing and watching football i have witnessed quite a few pens having to be retaken following encroachment by attacking players.
In every single case the pen has had to be retaken.
I have never seen a free kick awarded the other way.
Where did he get that from?

A good point is made by RoversDave, why wasnt he notified by his three little helpers?

That's the mystery in all this. There are four qualified referees out there and you'd think one of them would have said "hold on, that's wrong."

It's possible that one did and that Stroud chose to ignore him. If so, that's a very damning indictment of him.

Stroud is an odd one. He's capable of refereeing quite competently most of the time. However, every now and again he produces a horror show. I recall him making a complete Horlicks of a game at Bumhole Lane a few years ago. I think he sent three or four off.

Apparently he has been stood down for this weekend. I suspect he will be taking a break till next season.

If a penalty is missed or saved and it is the attacking team which encroaches, then it's an indirect free kick to the defending team.  If it is scored in the same circumstances then the penalty is retaken..

If the defending team encroaches and the penalty isn't scored, it's a retake.  If it was scored then the goal stands.

Simple really when you think about it..

I think there was 5 minutes of discussion, I imagine he overruled them.

having watched the freeze frame I saw 4 yellow Burton defenders more in the area than the Newcastle player at the bottom of the screen so why are DEFENDERS allowed to encroach but not attackers ??

it was an interesting night for penalties man city hadn't the intelligence to have defenders ready for a save whilst in the 0-0 match in Spain "someone against Granada"  4 Granada defenders moved in fast when the penalty was parried and one took it off the attackers toe having anticipated a save

I remember McIndoe I think it was score and the referee ordered a retake because of defenders encroachment. He then missed the retake.
It was at Belle Vue and I'm not sure if Kettle was the ref.

Kettle did it twice. Once with McIndoe against Macclesfield in 2002-03. Then with Heffernan in the JPT Area Final in 2006-07.

McIndoe missed the retake but Heff scored his.

Cheers for that TRB. I wasn't 100% sure. The Macca one seemed so stupid.

Like you say, simple. Its all common sense and definitely isn't something officials at any level should be getting wrong.
