So how do we rate England's chances? I don't think there's much between the teams, although if the Aussies were half as good at playing cricket as they are at talking we'd be staring down the barrel of a whitewash. I'm hoping you just don't get completely blown away at the Gabba, and then we might make a decent fist of it.
3-2 England.
-
Feel a lot more optimistic if Stokes was involved. Have to wait & see won't we.
3-1 England.
-
With William Hills England are 100/30 to win the series, I've had £20 on,I think it's pinching money
-
I fancy them to do it. They've been slagged and written off. Point to prove. Hopefully Stokes comes in at some point, he should be there.
-
Two very poor sides I think. If Smith scores as many or more than Root it’s game over.
-
Our bowling attack is not suited to the Assuis pitches, Anderson will struggle to swing it over there, and if the likes of Warner get going our batsmen will have to score a lot of runs
-
Their batting line up is not the strongest it's been,a lot will depend on Smith and Warner
-
First test is vital. Aussies rarely lose at the Gabba and it will be a long way back if we lose there. 3-0 Aussies. Mind you my brain is still scrambled after being in Mumbai and Chennai for the final two tests last winter !

The sad thing is not many will actually get to see any of it.Am I right in thinking BT sports now have sole right to any broadcasting pictures for the Ashes..Does that mean we wont even get the c5 highlight show..??
It will cost a minimum of £80 just for bt sports over the duration of the ashes apparently.
As foe the result it will be down to how we deal with the bouncy pitches..If the new guys fair better than they did this summer we will win.If they don't then we wont.First test is crucial.

I have internet with Plusnet, who have offered access to the BT sport App for £2.50 a month. This can be connected up to TV via airdrop. Worth looking into any offers that are out there.

My internet is with EE and they only offer deals on sim cards with bt sports on pay monthly...You would have thought that when paying 60 odd bonce a month including license for tv services you might be entitled to think you could do something old fashioned like turning on the telly box and watching it...

I have a feeling Australia will shade it 3-2 or 3-1. Hope I'm wrong but Stokes is a huge miss.
I can't help wondering if the Chief Constable of Avon & Somerset police is an Aussie. FFS, either charge him or get him on the next flight to Aus.
-
Forget Stokes ! If he clears the Somerset police he will likely get a lengthy test ban from the ECB as they look at stuff after the police investigation. Can you imagine what a laughing stock we will be to all the young kids in this country to say it is ok to go out thumping folk two days before an international match. He has been idiotic. The team is bigger than one player. If he doesn't grow up soon - he is a married man with a family I believe- then sorry dude we will get someone else who appreciates his position rather than abuses it.
-
Anyone found any decent streams yet?
-
Solid start by England - pretty attritional but I'm happy for us to play like that as it will wear down their quicks who don't have the best fitness record. Hopefully we can keep them in the field for a while tomorrow as well and post 350+. Promising that the ball is turning on day 1 as well, hope that Ali makes the Most of it when they're batting last.
-
Yeah good steady start by England. Hopefully Moeen and Jonny will get hundreds tomorrow. So much for the bouncy Gabba pitch ! Will it turn when the pitch dries out a bit more though ?

Lyons was turning it plenty on day one and although there wasn't as much in the pitch as we thought, they bowled pretty well on it..
This is were we are going to really miss Stokes..First hour is crucial lose a early wicket and it's 250,see off the new ball and it's 350 plus..All in all about level for me and I will take that..
As for watching it.I managed to get a great stream off Mobdro.
-
Blown away by a bang average bowling attack, not helped by Moeen's dodgy stumping
-
Rumours doing the rounds on Twitter that Ben Stokes is currently at Heathrow getting on a plane to Australia.
Wouldn't have believed it but there was a photo of a well built gent from behind with a load of cricket gear.
Hoist up the John B sail...

Average bowling attack !! stokes at airport !! stupidness aplenty on this forum dudes !!

Least I've got a basic grasp of English.
Confirmed he's travelling to New Zealand to train and spend time with family.
How very convenient.
-
Thought you said he was getting on a plane to Australia. Look dude he won't play unless he is cleared by Somerset Police then he has to attend a disciplinary meeting with the ECB as he is currently banned from cricket. Will that happen in 7 weeks .... NO ! But yes- your grasp of English could easily be described as basic.
-
Hold the front page !! Stokes is going back to New Zealand where he was born... to see his relations!!

Love twitter for gossip but sorry England fans Ben Stokes isn’t on a Big Bird Down Under .....
-
Alright Geoff calm down no ones that bothered. 3 posts in 10 minutes that could have been placed in 1.
Chill out, dude.
For the record, he's in talks with Canterbury out there to play cricket. I imagine he'll be getting a talking to off police for that seen as though he's 'banned from cricket'.
-
Dont know whether we have discussed this before and an Ashes thread seems the right place
Do Aussies give the score as 7 for 169 JUST to annoy us - and if not why is it that way round ?
Personally I dont see any logic to it. You win the game by outscoring the other team and so to give the Wickets first is just bizarre.
-
Apparently when the first scoreboard was built in Australia about 1890 it had wickets before runs, therefore it become customary to say the score the same as it read on the scoreboard, like 2-78 instead of 78-2, since all scoreboards built after that were probably built with the same design its difficult to change a tradition that has lasted for generations
-
Just watching todays play, Englands day all round, the Aussie are rattled, Smith has goot a face like a slapped arse, wasted two reviews and told the Barmy army to f**k off for taking the piss.
Shit Malan just been bowled 😩😩
-
Close of play, 177 to win, 6 wickets still standing, bat sensibly and we can do it tomorrow
-
If we can get to the new ball without losing a wicket I think we’ll do it.
-
Tough ask..
It is do-able with Root still in, but if I was a betting man I would say we won't get past 250, unfortunately.
Hope I am wrong!
-
Woakes is in as night**tchman, but he can bat, he needs to stay with Root tomorrow, Moeen and Bairstow can bat and Overton showed in the first innings he can stick around. The key is getting through the first session intact
-
If Malan could've just held out to the end of the day I'd call it 50/50 but the Aussies have to be favourites going into the last day now. That said, I thought it was all over after the Aussies' declaration so what do I know?!
-
Think its a bridge too far and "Gary" will eventually see us off ! Love to be wrong though !
God I hate all the false oohs and aahs when the ball is nowhere near getting a wicket - and the incessant "well bowled Gaza " Nice one Gary" etc etc. Both teams as bad and its annoying (mostly me probably)
-
it was seat of your pants stuff listening to TMS through the night and this morning. Even the commentators were too nervous to sit down. Aussies still strong favourites but at least we are still in it and have a chance. Those that have paid thousands to be there have at least had something to cheer about. Come on England and Jonny Bairstow to hit the winning run !
-
It was pure comedy watching the barmy army take the piss out of Smith and Smith biting
-
I think we are going to come up short but boy if we could have only batted to par in the 1st innings
-
Am I missing the blindingly obvious......why do they call Nathan Lyon Gary and Gaza?
Really need Root and Woakes to stay put and add runs in the morning. Will be tough with Cummins getting reverse spin and Lyon weaving his magic.

Not the blinding obvious at all unless you're an Aussie Rules fan. Apparently a famous player of that particular code called Gary Lyon to whom Nathan Lyon owes the Gaz moniker

Good prediction, we suffered from our usual batting collapse again
-
The selecters have been poor, they should have taken Woods and Pluncket for pace and Rashid as a spinner.
-
I don't think the bowling is the fault, it's the batting,Cook has hardly scored a run , Vince and Malan are very good cricketers but not international standard, but there again who do replace them with. Bairstow should be batting at 5 not 8, the Australians have been sledging him big style but not about the head but, really hope it's not about his dad, if so he should t*@t the next one that makes a comment, well out of order .
-
They should be adjusting the batting order so they don't have two left handers in at the same time, Nathan Lyon is not half as effective against right hander
-

I would be surprised if the sledging that 'crossed the line' is not about his Dad. Despicable if so. Wonder if stump mikes picked up anything

Maybe that's why he said he'd take things further - whatever that means.

Hateful players, the Australians. Bullies when on top. Whining bairns when they are losing.

Douglas Jardine knew how to deal with them.

It’s fine being hard men when you’re winning. It’s losing that brings out your true character. Ive rarely seen an Austrialian side lose the Ashes with dignity.

But, unlike Root, he had the quickest bowler on his side
-
it's going forward that worry's me,We win at home because we have Anderson but at 36 his time is coming to a end now and Stuart Broad hasn't shown much form with anything for a while for me no real strike bowlers coming through...We don't have a spinner of any quality at all either..
Then there's the batting,at a time when we should be thinking of Cook's replacement we are still looking to find him a partner capable, and there are spots available if anybody has the skill to cement them...The rest of the squad seem to like a ale far to much for there own good...
I had a couple of days at Trent bridge against the South Africans in the summer (our worst two days of the summer) we said then that we might be heading for a poor few years until some new players come through..
-
WC
Seam bowling is the least of our worries, I think. Woakes is a very good bowler in English conditions and can take over the mantle from Jimmy, who has never done great things in Australia.
The big worries for me are spin bowling and batting. Since the last Ashes tour we've lost Trott, Bell and KP and only found one quality replacement in Root. Arguably we haven't had a solid opening partnership since Strauss retired. The same can be said with the spin department re Swann. Although I rate Moeen and think there must be a reason (injury probably) why he's bowling so poorly at the moment.
Problem is that the county set up (lots of T20, cuts in the number of Championship games) isn't producing spinners or bowlers of real pace, and batsmen are not used to playing long innings. I do agree with your basic point though. England have some lean years to come, certainly in Test cricket.
-
Yet another batting collapse this morning, after Bairstow and Malan put us in a commanding position
-
We really miss Stokes down there don't we...Basically the last 5 wickets are worth about 70 runs it would seem without him..Woakes and Moeen have been shocking and Stuart Broad can count himself lucky we don't have a decent bowler with pace else he would be carrying the drinks for me..Not offering much in any aspect of the game at the minute..
-
I will say this though..If Stokes was Australian or a similar thing would have happened to one of there best players I bet either they would have fast tracked the investigation or he would still be playing anyway..
-

I agree, I don't think Warner was prevented from playing when he chinned Joe Root a few years ago

Probably because Root didn't press charges.
-
What I don't get with the England batting is that not one of them has the mindset to dig in when required, they just throw their wicket away. Take Broad for example this morning, a decent batsman before he got t**tted in the face a couple of years ago, he's trying to launch one for 6 and gets out, he should be staying there and picking up 1's and 2's, and waiting for the odd loose delivery to crack for a boundry
-
Looking ominous tomorrow - how DO they get Smith out ? He looks like he could bat forever and only looked in trouble when the short ball hit him and rolled agonisingly (for us) back towards the Stumps but he swatted it away
Best thing is keep him off strike and try for the others - but a) that's easy for me to say and b) "the others" tend to do what our tail end Batsman dont as Filo has highlighted just above
-
You are right Donnywolf,it cant be a coincidence,he used to be a handy controlled lower batsmen..It had to be a decent ball to get him out..Now it's like he doesn't want to even bat, every innings is the same whatever the game situation..March out, throw your bat at it and be back in the hutch...
The fact that he's a big tall bowler,he should be our most effective yet they are milking him out the attack with no problems...
I can see these getting 550 and then steaming through us again..Although strangely for Perth the weather could be a issue..
-
You can't blame someone going in at 9 for losing his wicket cheaply, it's not his job to put runs on the board. It's not Stuart Broad's batting that is the issue, it's his bowling.
-
I would agree with you on the Bowling Nick,it's poor at the minute and in truth has been for a while..
I do take issue with you on the batting though..Cricket has moved on from 10 years ago, everybody has to be able to bat,as every year goes by there are less out and out rabbits, they are taught how to defend, block and score off the bad ones. And history tells us he can bat,he's had numerous test 50's to his name batting sensibly and patiently...So he can do it if he implies himself properly..As a bowler you don't need a plan..Short of a length and broad will dish his wicket up on a plate....
Not just him though Moeen Ali is having a mare again too..
-
I will say this though..If Stokes was Australian or a similar thing would have happened to one of there best players I bet either they would have fast tracked the investigation or he would still be playing anyway..

He was banned from the first two tests for chinning Root
-

Bairstow lost his wicket because he had no confidence in any of the lower order to stick around, so started playing risky shots to get runs on the board
-
He would have been elated at getting a Maiden Ton v Aussies and as senior man did what you said. Threw the Bat knowing he would run out of partners
Unfortunately as Wing Co said above Smith wont run out of partners till he declares just after his double Century and them on 550 ish
Really REALLY hope I am miles out (but ok on Super 6 instead)
-

Ok, I stand corrected, two tests verses the whole series
-
Todays play proves how poor our lower order are, Smith closing in on a double ton and every batsman is hanging around with him
-
Aussies now one behind with 6 wickets still standing, the writing is on the wall for England now, expect a declaration after lunch tomorrow giving Australia 5 sessions to bowl England out
-

Looks like my Super 6 today will be s**t
I was wrong about a declaration when Smith got to 200 as they are still only on 460 but 550 is not far away on this wicket in these conditions and our Bowlers
Rain a possibility on last 2 days - wouldn't you just know it so if the Aussies get their skates on today and half of tomorrow they will have a day and a half to get through us - and unless the rain gets too heavy they will have time and ideal conditions to make it 3-0
-
It's been a lot more one-sided than I expected it to be.
-
... I have been watching with a sack on my head (an improvement before BB gets that one in) for the last 2 hours
There is no limit to the score that they can amass as there seems nothing in the Wicket at all !
:( :( :(

Nothing in the wicket but Australia managed to skittle our last 6 wickets for 60 odd runs. I'd suggest theres nothing in our bowling

Just woke up. Flicking through BT as I like to watch the A League on weekend mornings. Seen the Aussies' score. Nah.

England coach Paul Fabrace on BT Sport
"I think we've played well today"
Can we have him drug tested or sectioned please?

Time for a radical overhaul of the team, out must go Anderson, Broad and Cook for starters. All past their best now.
-
If Anderson,Broad and Cook go, who do you replace them with ? I'm not a big fan of Broad but there's not many bowlers in county cricket of his standard. English test cricket is suffering from the money that's in twenty20 which has made players all bit part players, bowl a bit , bat a bit .
Also world wide test cricket should use the same ball for 5 years , not keep changing between Kuccaburra and Dukes depending on where the game is being played
-
You can replace Anderson and Broad with any of the following, Curran, Ball, Woods (when fit) or a whole host of county players. They won’t be as good as those two were. But you have to blood them at sometime as time has caught up with England’s opening pair.
-

I think Cook and Broad might have jumped the shark, but Anderson? He's still an excellent bowler in English conditions and if he stays fit he'll take plenty of Aussie wickets in 2019.

Thats the problem with Anderson, bang average in conditions other than English

Well, he's a swing bowler and if the ball doesn't swing much he won't be as effective. Worth noting he's England's leading wicket taker in this series, in conditions that are not helpful to him.
With Broad the problems seem to go deeper. He strikes me he's lost both a bit of pace and the ability to move the ball. I thought so last season.
-
I once met Broad's dad Chris ,arrogant turd 💩
-
From a position of 384-4 in the first innings we are now one wicket away from an innings defeat and losing the ashes, totally unacceptable!
-
Australia have taken 60 wickets in the three matches, England have taken 39, add those figures to our batting woes and there was only ever going to be one winner
-
As I said earlier, it’s time for a radical shake up getting rid of the old guard
-
As I said earlier, it’s time for a radical shake up getting rid of the old guard
I agree, Cook, Moeen and Broad should be on the next flight to Heathrow, Broad especially, ineffective bowling and lost the ability to bat, he was once considered an all rounder at one time as well
-
I would leave Broad out but even though they have been poor, where are the alternatives to Cook and Moeen? There isn't another opener in the squad and the other spinner is untried and no batsman.
-

Sir Geoffrey got right on BT Sports this morning, Moeen is not a quality spinner as proved by Nathen Lyon, he's a T20 batsman that can bowl a bit
-
One thing that amazes me is that England despite having therapists, nutrionists etc etc don't think they need a coach for spin..Haven't done for years apart from Mushtaq Ahmed of course but he was brought in as a bowling coach for everyone..It was a coincidence he was a spinner..One coach covers both fast and spin bowling..Its crazy, two different arts..
We haven't got a spinner at the moment,i don't really class Moeen as one tbh,all the specialist spinners are not good enough...We have Graham Swann working the radio when he should be working with the young spinners....
Personally I'm done with Broad..I would rather start blooding a youngster for the long term than persevering with someone who is clearly on the wain rather than out of form..Better to do it in stages rather than both main strike bowlers together..Cook will retire I think..He has the look of a guy who is on the verge of it...Ironic that before this series started the question was were the likes of Stoneman,Vance and Malan up to the task..The answer is yes, sadly the ones we didn't question clearly arn't against the very best...
-
The players have tried, but ultimately the bowling on this tour just hasn't been good enough. Time to bring some younger blood in and rebuild. Yes it will be tough for a few years but there needs to be a long term view on the national team and it's all too short term.
-
Glosterred, and to a lesser extent Filo - any criticism of Anderson is ridiculous. Apparently he can’t bowl in Australia, but he’s taken 12 wickets so far this series, almost twice as many as England’s next best bowler, and more than Pat Cummins despite bowling at batsmen who are mostly better and in better form. His overall average there is 35.69 – admittedly not great, but way better than recent contemporaries Matthew Hoggard (45.31), Steve Harmison (50.86) and even Stuart Broad (37.42).
And even if it’s true, and the only place Anderson can bowl is in England - so what? He’s the greatest bowler we’ve ever had at doing just that. The summer just gone he took 39 wickets at 14 apiece and rose to the top of the world rankings. Nobody is going to come into the side and bowl anything like that. Unless his fitness drops, he will still be our best hope with the ball by next summer’s ashes.
Cook is having a very, very poor series but it's not time to drop him yet. If we're dropping people for having poor series then only Malan, Anderson, Bairstow and arguably Vince would keep their place. Broad I think needs a spell out of the side - I don't know whether it's complacency, lack of motivation or what but he doesn't merit his place in the side and I'd be tempted to replace him for the next test, even if just to give him a kick up the arse.

6 of Andersons wickets have come in the day night match in swing friendly conditions
-
Anderson may be the leading English wicket taker but he is 35 and at the end of his career and therefore part of the old guard and needs replacing now. There is little point in playing the old guard, Anderson, Broad and Cook in the next two tests as there is absolutely nothing to play for, other than a little pride, so and we might as well blood the young and see what they can do in testing conditions.

Stop the presses - bowler who performs better in certain conditions puts in his best performance in those conditions. Remarkable.

And thats what I was saying, the day night test gave favourable conditions, had it been a day test with the red kukaburra ball Anderson would have struggled, just as he has in the other two tests. Great in English conditions, average anywhere else
-
My post was more aimed at Glosterred saying that Jimmy should be jettisoned from the team, but I also think that the reason that Anderson gets called average everywhere else is purely because he's so, SO good in England. He still has very favourable figures compared to a lot of our other best bowlers of the last 20 years, as demonstrated above.
-
So Nick you’re happy keeping a 35 year old playing who is past his prime and not giving the chance to younger bowlers to gain valuable experience. Not forgetting that 4 of Anderson’s wickets came when the Aussies were chasing runs in a test we lost having been 368/4
-
When he’s still our best bowler by a mile then yes of course I’m happy keeping him.
-
What younger bowlers would you pick ?? It all comes down to English cricket being full of bit part crickets ,bowl a bit, bat a bit . It's geared to 20 twenty,it's where the money is, but it's killing the county championship and will kill test cricket
-
For the Aussies conditions I’d have picked Plunkett, but there again I’d have taken an experienced spinner as well.

Liam Plunkett is 32 and older than Stuart Broad! So much for getting rid of players past their prime and getting youngsters in hahaha!

Can you name me any experienced spinners who are better than Moeen Ali? Yes, Moeen has had a wretched series but he was one of our best players last summer.
The best spinner in County Cricket is arguably Jeetan Patel of Warwickshire. But he's never torn up any trees when playing for New Zealand.
I actually think they should have taken both Plunkett and Wood. Both are injury prone but between them you might get four or five tests. Both are also quicker than the other members of the seam attack.

But would have probably bowled better in the conditions than Broad has getting more bounce and at a faster pace. But you would still play a 35year old. As for an experienced spinner, how about Adil Rashid for starters or the young Somerset spinner Jack Leach.
-
Leach has been playing for the England Lions in Australia and has been going around the park. Absolutely Rashid should have been included in the party but for some reason he is not fancied as a red ball cricketer by England. Don't ask me why.

Hateful players, the Australians. Bullies when on top. Whining bairns when they are losing.
Your point is never better illustrated than the current "row" over the Australians' persistent use of bouncers at tailenders. Mike Atherton made some perfectly reasonable points in The Times and expressed concern that a non-batsman like Ball or Anderson could be seriously hurt. The reaction of Steve Smith was what I expected. Just surprised he didn't call Atherton a whinging Pom.

Interestingly Greg Baum, one of the few fair-minded Aussie journalists, makes a similar point. They seem to have forgotten that one of their own was killed by a bouncer two years ago. And he was a proper batsman.

Well, Cook and Broad have at last shown some class, it's just too late though
-
I think this test has shown what a key man Mitchell Starc is for Australia. Having him out seriously weakens both their batting and bowling. I was surprised they called in Bird to replace him. He can't bat and he's a trundler by Aussie standards.
Reminds me a bit of 1974-75 when Lillee and Thomson were tearing us a new one. Both were injured for the last Test and we hammered them. Hopefully we'll do likewise here and at Sydney.

Starc is on a different level to any other bowler they have, by far and away better than Cummins and Hazlewood.

...and a pity we lost Broad to an unconvincing "catch" and 2 higher order batsmen were given out LBW when both had edged it (according to Snicko) and yet neither of them reviewed their dismissals !
-
As a Yorkshire man WILLEY, COAD and RACHID should replace England's under performing bowlers, Not sure who should replace Cook, but I guess another Yorkshire man ought to,
-
Well Lyth had a chance to stake his claim and didn’t do a lot, and Lees is crap so not sure any Yorkshireman will be replacing Cook anytime soon!
-
7 Matches ( 2NZ 5 Aus) 1 century, but lot of low scores, bit like most who have come and gone since ( playing lesser mortals ), maybe another look next year worthwhile.
-
There's at least another a Yorkshireman there , just spotted John Barker in his Rovers shirt, sat on the front row
