So i just got done checking the local news and different forums and our good friends across South Yorkshire in Sheffield on the Skyscraper City DSA forum are still trying to lay claim to our airport and think the Sheffield name should come first, now i understand that Sheffield is big city with a big population and customer base, and their name been in the airports name was always going to happen, but how do we feel about this as local people and our great asset to this great town?
I find it quiet disrespectful and they assume that no one knows where Doncaster is and we cant make a name for ourselfs on an international level

Agreed, i hope the Airport never actually consider this as they have increased their advertising in Sheffield with sponsoring the Sheffield arena, they even struck a deal with Sheffield United before us, i think there would be uproar in the town if that ever happened, we have an aviation history, lets be honest Sheffield only has its name now, and ive always seen the city as an overgrown mess tbh, Doncaster has so much potential

When you go any other airport it's always referred to as DONCASTER,and when you arrive at the airport by plane the cabin crew say " welcome to DONCASTER "

I don't understand all this bullshit about Sheffield being more famous than Doncaster and so should have its name first. What exactly is it famous for, other than it once had a Steel industry? What about Doncaster's Railway, (famous) Locomotive building, Tractor building, Glassmaking, Rope making industries?
Not to mention the world-famous racecourse, and history of earliest aviation.
'Famous' Sheffield had its chance of supporting its own airport and failed miserably. The task is now in the hands of a proper place with proper culture, and the Sheffield people should think themselves bloody lucky to have their city's name on it, as undeserved as it is.

Great post their Bentley, we have over 100 years of aviation history in Doncaster, and they think they deserve the right to have their name before ours, Sheffield is a poor man's city, Doncaster has progressed so much over the last decade, we now have one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country with the Yorkshire Wildlife Park which is been further expanded, we may soon have a PGA Europran Tour golf course, to many things to mention.
Has anyone seen the proposed new Museum/Art Gallery/Library built where the old Doncaster High School for Girls is, they plan to encase the front of the old building in glass, and plan to have virtual reality education about the history of Doncaster in it.

Here is is roversdude, it has got the go ahead from the council, would be quite a stand out building if they are able to get the funding for the glass front.

Sheffield arena is now called FLYDSA arena, I googled a random place in Sheffield to see how far it is from the airport,didn't want to choose either Bumhole Lane or Hillsborough, and distance is 22.3 miles.

I think the current name is sensible. Outside of the UK doncaster may well be more famous simply due to the racecourse and leger. Sheffield clearly bigger in the UK and famous from snooker etc and it's universities. Why not have it as it is? It hits both targets.
To have it just as sheffield though? It would be silly. Sheffield people in some cases see themselves as great. In many areas there are big issues with the city. Just compare it to Leeds and Manchester both not far away...
My grumble is Doncaster. It has a lot of work to do and why can't it be very successful? Again why do professionals in many cases have to commute and why do so many youngsters leave? That's the problem not just for the town but largely for rovers. Getting kids supporting rovers is easy. Getting young adults to stay in Doncaster? A problem.

I see Doncaster's airport has had the 'Robin Hood' removed from its name. Only sensible really. After all, why include the legendary heroic outlaw's name when he was from Nottingham, not Doncaster!
In that respect, it's the same as including 'Sheffield' in the title, only worse..................... Robin Hood might have been a prolific thief but even he wouldn't have gone as far as trying to pinch a chuffin' airport.

Robin Hood was often referred to as Robin of Loxley. Loxley is in Sheffield.

Yorkshire , countywide Devo only -then Sheffield and Leeds can battle it out for top dog !

Think its already been done, Donny and Barnsley both voted in favour of a Yorkshire wide deal

I think Doncater is way better and has a lot more to offer than both Sheffield and Leeds and is a much nicer place, the potential of this Town is huge

It was decided a few weeks back. There was a very big majority in both Barnsley and Donny (from very low turn outs I have to add) to go for the wider Yorkshire option. Results here

I suspect that our being "done down" by Sheffield in the past was weighing on the voters minds at least in Donny
Now we have an interesting Election coming up because if I understand correctly the Govt WONT put off the Mayoral Elections in South Yorkshire and so there are Candidates Dan Jarvis for one ( a Barnsley MP) who are standing for that Mayors job so they can try to change things to a Yorkshire wide Mayor "from the inside"
He has said he will continue as an MP and take his Pay but will not collect any of the Mayors pay that he would be entitled to. Someone will correct my crap if I have got it wrong !

We also paid for the world student games in Sheffiled and I believe are still paying for it all these years later as it won't be paid off until 2024 and part of this initiative was to build the Don Valley Stadium which has now been demolished. :thumbdown:
