The snow is expected to go on today Thursday and Saturday
-
Odds...
On-2/7
Off- 11/4
-
We will have to see but it's not the pitch it's the surrounding area
-
What snow, none here in stainy

Even Snow's not daft enough to go to Stainy.

Hardly the end of the world, it is winter after all...
-
Worst of it looks to be today.

Yes I woke up once at Niagara Falls after it had REALLY snowed and was almost 3 feet deep. I / we ended up in Philadelphia by the end of the day a distance of 400+ miles with barely a hitch .....
.... and here "The Beast from the East" has dropped a few flakes on Thorne but will be worse elsewhere (it has to be ?) and we have Train Companies closing down Services where there has not yet been any snow and mass coverage on TV News - and dont forget to send Reporters out in the snow to remind us what it looks like !
Maybe its time to change my user name to "Grumpy Old Man" or something similar. Its been coming on a while but was probably exacerbated by Saturday !
-
it's crazy isn't it..I went to the local shop last night and not a loaf of bread to be seen..Weve had a quick flurry and according to the forcast the worst is over for us..Never has the term snowflakes been more relevant to how this country reacts to things like this.Other countries who have snow on a regular basis must laugh at how weak we are..If I was the Russians I would stop developing nuclear weapons and put the money into inventing a snow machine..It would bring this country to a standstill in a hour..

Half an hours just covered it over at work. It a heading towards donny so don't be surprised by it if it makes it. It a hardly snowmageddon though.

This is why clubs should start to get 3g pitches. CSKA Moscow played red star Belgrade last week in minus 20 on a 3g pitch.
It would then free up ground staff for things like gritting the walkways and car parks around the ground.
-
We don’t have long hard winters to warrant the cost IMHO.
Clearing beyond the stadium environment wound still be an issue.. with council budgets, I reckon sports fixtures would have a low priority for snow clearance..
-
I wouldn't fancy being sat in the Keepmoat in a minus 20 temperature. It's like Siberia most of the time as it is!

The FA don’t allow artificial pitches in the football league.

Strictly speaking it's the Football League (EFL) that won't allow 3g pitches. Neither will the Premier League. The FA allows them in the FA Cup.

True, although UEFA alow them in the biggest competition in Europe.

not pinched it yet

It's started now, it's here quick...."EVERYONE INDOORS, C'MON, SAVE YOURSELVES!!"

It’s becoming apparent we’ll never see quality games and coverage like this again:- :(

That must be Valley Parade in the late 50s before the Midland Rd stand was closed for years.
It's snowed on and off in Bradford this morning but supposed to get worse later. The roads are ok but council men are gritting the pavements round by us.
-
Expecting to get worse this evening
-
The Weather and the current EU "mess" have similarities - and I have decided just to wait and see what happens in each case although the Weather / Game On or Off scenario will be more swiftly resolved
-
We will be fine, doncaster never gets bad snow.

Can anyone remember a few years back when we played at home to Middlesbrough on the Friday before Christmas I don't think I've ever been as cold in my life as that night I remember the second half when there keeper kept going up too the referee and saying the the penalty area was freezing over trying to get the game postponed

Worth waiting for the winner though!

That was the Stocky one that went about two inches over the line.
By god, it was cold that night but probably normal for people from Middlesbrough.
-
Re: 3G pitches - Stenhousemuir v Cowdenbeth was called off tonight due to the weather and Ochilview has a 3G pitch.
-
That probably means that about 200 people will have to find something else to do tonight.
-
I remember clearing the pitch and terraces at Belle Vue for the FA Cup tie with Cambridge in the early 80s. Me and my two mates were on the back page of the DEP clearing the Rossington End.
Also a game against Reading when Rovers were desperate to get it on so Ian Snodin wouldn't be cup tied for the FA Cup tie at Everton the following week. Absolutely freezing and I am sure we lost 4-0.

Yes I think we won that game because by injury time, the goalie had frozen into an ice statue and therefore Stock had an easy finish.

Agree on the snow thing Tonyb but it could still leave a frozen pitch.

What's the forecast like for Thursday night into Friday morning?
Got a flight due to land at Donny Airport at 8.00am and I can do without the magical mystery tour of diverting to a different airport, then having to get back to Donny.
What’s the problem did yoy see the pitch at Peterborough v Walsall last night.
A throw back to the 1970’s Snow covered pitch with an orange ball. Get on with it. Well done to them.

As stated above though it isn't the snow, it's the pitch freezing over that'll kill it.
That and it being unsafe to get to the ground.

If the club/council can’t clear the “surrounding areas” it’s pretty poor.

Being completely, 100% selfish, I hope it is called off as I'm out of the country and can't make it.

It isn't just that, I've been shocked this morning at just how many have got into work. Those that haven't by and large aren't because of the road situation or being snowed in but because of the school closures and the lack of child care. I imagine the Council as well as most other businesses are the same. Add to that the still falling snow and any clearing of it would be pointless. I personally can't see the game being on Saturday.

If the snow is as bad on Saturday as it is today the fans won’t be able to get to the match on time.
I have just got back home after dropping the wife off at work in Donny.
We left Hatfield at 8.10 and I got home at 10.30.
Some ridiculously slow drivers out there holding traffic up.
Some cars abandoned causing queues waiting to get past them and can’t because of oncoming traffic.

you say drivers going slow on the roads, they do right driving anything more than slow this weather and they are asking for trouble, it is far to dangerous

I agree with you in one respect, but at the same time if drivers are scared of driving in it they should n't go out and drive in it
-
It's not as straight forward as that, it's nothing to do with being scared as the snow melts it makes it like an ice skating rink, I went out in the car this morning and it was sliding all over if I went more than 20 miles an hour

You don't need to tell me about it, I was working in it last night, done lots of snow driving, lots of people just don't know how to drive in it. Stay off your brakes, get in a higher gear as possible and take corners smoothly, no erratic steering, and guve yourself plenty of room to stop

Buy a Subaru then it's not a problem. Every morning i get run of the road by Audis on the long road from WWS to Blaxton. This morning was payback time!

If there is no one in front of you on a gritted road, you are doing ten miles an hour and there is an enormous queue behind you then you are going too slow.

The cooling towers were demolished in the late 70s/early80s. It always seemed funny it being so near to the city centre.

Not that long since Doncaster had a power station almost in the town centre - demolished 1986, now occupied by Doncatraz.

Which helped turn the River Don "foamy". Here is a view from the Prison towards St Marys Bridge. It was a "dead" River but now (even) I have caught Barbel from that very spot - and it supports Trout and Salmon !
Never thought in my life I would see it so clean
-
Redj, the driver at the front of a queue is the one who is driving in the worst conditions in snow, I wish I had a quid for every time someone has flashed past in bad weather and immediately slowed down when in fog or snow.
Just be happy to get where you are going, if you are late you didn't set off early enough.
There are 4 generations of drivers who have not had to drive in that bad a winter, have been taught to drive on their brakes when stopping, and not going through the gears on slippy roads, and keep up with traffic instead of giving space to the motor in front, and they wonder why it is carnage.
-
Wolfie, that picture was taken on a good day, I have seen it a lot worse than that mate, and blowing all over the place.
The Don with the river Rother was once classed as the most polluted in Europe, some accolade eh.
How it beat the Aire at Castleford was a mystery though, just downstream from the Higgson and Welch chemical works.
If the foam coming over the bridge near the rugby field landed on your clothes the stain was on them for ever, and the water was a yellow colour and smelled terrible.

Absolutely Selby, the techniques and standards taught today are simply dreadful. To add to your list I'd like to include lane discipline, not just on motorways but dual carriageways like the A638 from Town to Woodlands - the number of drivers who sit in the outside lane all the way from town, (usually at well below the speed limit), because they're turning right at the Highwayman even though the inside lane is empty simply astounds me.
-
I like it when the 4 x 4's get really close behind you! I've got a Mazda6, and the grip is awful in these conditions.

How it beat the Aire at Castleford was a mystery though, just downstream from the Higgson and Welch chemical works.
If the foam coming over the bridge near the rugby field landed on your clothes the stain was on them for ever, and the water was a yellow colour and smelled terrible.
Don't forget the Don came through all Sheffield steel workswho were puthering all sorts into it, and Mexborough power station (also demolished for the glimmer housing estate)

More snow expected over the weekend

the temps are not going to get above freezing before Saturday..I've pretty much accepted that it's going to be a day home dodging the jobs list...

Redj, the driver at the front of a queue is the one who is driving in the worst conditions in snow, I wish I had a quid for every time someone has flashed past in bad weather and immediately slowed down when in fog or snow.
Just be happy to get where you are going, if you are late you didn't set off early enough.
There are 4 generations of drivers who have not had to drive in that bad a winter, have been taught to drive on their brakes when stopping, and not going through the gears on slippy roads, and keep up with traffic instead of giving space to the motor in front, and they wonder why it is carnage.
... Not sure why you're naming me, I haven't said anything about driving in the weather. I was commenting on the driving styles you tend to associate with drivers of certain types of car...

Everything seems to be getting shut down at the moment - schools, work, centres - I'll be amazed if we're all sat at the football on Saturday.

Wish my work was getting shut down...

Great picture of Donny Power Station though.
we were taken for a tour round by Danum Grammar in 1969 ,
part of Engineering Science course. Can still remember the Control Room
as being pretty impressive.

Rj, I was just answering your post, a generalisation, not intimating anything about your driving, sorry if you
thought so.
Probably agree about certain German makes of cars, although they are as common as the Cortina used to be and after all are as cheap as chips.
One report I read was that the car the RAC/AA have to pull off the motor ways the most are BMWs, high performance = high maintenance.

The cooling towers were demolished in the late 70s/early80s. It always seemed funny it being so near to the city centre.
Not that long since Doncaster had a power station almost in the town centre - demolished 1986, now occupied by Doncatraz.

Always wondered why there were no cooling towers at Donny? Did they just fire the hot water straight into the Don? Hence the foam?
