I reckon Smith is only sorry they got caught and Bancroft is the fall guy for it
https://youtu.be/D1sKZUbpG6A
-
I thought Ricky Ponting was a bit of a knob but he seems like a decent bloke in comparison to Smith.
Also unlike England the Yaapies seem to have worked out how to bowl at him. I suppose it helps if you have a coach who is vaguely interested in Test cricket.
-
From the video clip it appears to me that players like Smith, Warner, Lyon, Hazlewood etc have hung Bancroft out to dry, and I don't believe for one minute The coach knew nothing about it, especially when he sent the 12th man out to tell him to hide the offending article. Lengthy bans should be applied to those involved, the coach and the "leadership team"

Cheating and bad sportsmanship is in the Australian DNA
-
... but Stuart Broad didnt make us look good either did he ?
-
... but Stuart Broad didnt make us look good either did he ?
But did he cheat?
The umpires never gave him out, he did nothing the Aussies would have and have done over the years, anyone remember the underarm ball ordered by Gregg Chappel, to prevent New Zealand the chance to hit a six to win the game?
-
He probably did not cheat by the letter of the Law but did not live up to the ethos "thats just not Cricket" which he could have done
Nobody who saw that underarm Ball will ever forget it either - I was seething. Again not cheating though
-
The same pair that giggled their way through an interview about Jonny Bairstow head butting Bancroft, they looked a lot different and contrite in this interview. Both should be banned, Smith should be getting a substantial ban.
-
Smith and Warner stand down as Captian and Vice Captain for the rest of this test, they are making it look like they had a choice, I love watching the Aussies squirm 😂😂😂😂😂😂
-

.... and have all the Runs he has scored in the last year expunged from the Record Books and the Results of those games amended accordingly !

Yes the underarm bowl did take some beating - I hated that too but that was within the rules of the game ; this is systematic cheating seemingly involving a cast of players.
The Australian public will rip them new arseholes for this - I agree he is being hung out to dry . However they might as well consider different careers outside sport those involved in this.

Classic headline!

Haha RB well sourced and so apt .

Smith fined his entire match fee and banned for one Test. Bancroft fined 75% of his fee and given demerit points. Now up to Cricket Australia what they do about Smith and co.
I don't see how he can keep the captaincy.

Hopefully Cricket Australia will show more balls than the ICC.
Maybe Broad is being a bit provocative - maybe genuine - when he said today the England players couldn't figure out how the Aussies were getting swing on some of the drop-in pitches while the English bowlers couldn't and just put it down to home conditions/home advantage etc.
-
No he can't possibly be the vice either. I suspect that the Aussie authorities will come down on anyone involved in a heavy way. Blatant cheating will never go down well with the Aussies .
-
Well he has quit the Captaincy for the rest of this Test - Warner has done the same with the Vice Captaincy - but after that who knows ?
-
How many times in the last few years has David Warner been involved in things on and off the pitch ? As a previous post said Aussies are known for cheating, going to find Bob Willis's take on it because he doesn't mince his words

You’ve heard the one about Noel Coward going through passport control at Sydney in the 40s?
The officer looks at him and says “D’ya have a criminal record?”
Coward replies in that fey upper class voice “My dear boy. I had no idea it was a still a requirement.”

Remind me, who was the last Aussie to walk against England?

Now I can't ever remember them walking . This latest cheating takes the biscuit though. It's equivalent to the hand of God by the greatest of cheats Maradona or even Thierry Henri's cheating.

Theirs was impulsive cheating, the Aussies was pre meditated, which makes it worse in my book
-

He did what almost every Australian has done since cricket was invented - he waited for the Umpire's decision (which was wrong in this case).
It's fine for people to criticise Broad if they have always walked when they know they are out. It is the ultimate in hypocrisy for most Australian cricketers to do so because they would have done exactly the same.
-
I have to say I'm loving this, not because it's Australia nor because the main protagonists are two deeply unsavoury characters (I acknowledge they are both very good cricketers, by the way).
No, this is Greek Tragedy at its best. Hubris met by Nemesis. The Australians spent the build up to the Ashes trying to portray England as the bad guys, at best an indisciplined rabble, at worst a team that bent the rules. Then in this series they have done the same with the South Africans. Now they are caught, red handed, doing things that are far worse than they have accused others of doing.
If the Australian Board is going to do anything for the credibility of their team, then Smith and Warner need to be taking a lengthy break from cricket.

I think those two were also instrumental in the pay dispute with Cricket Australia, maybe ghey think they are untouchable. And I'm loving it because it's Australia 😂😂😂😂
-
Just been watching the news and now footage has emerged of Bancroft putting sugar in his pocket during the Ashes series, that would explain why the Assies got ball movement while our players never got it to move at all
-
how many actually believe the punishment from Cricket Australia will be anything more than a reprimand and a couple of games ban? Half the team should be in it right up to their necks but Smith and Warner will be the only two senior players to be brought to book JMHO
-
No I think you will be surprised the Aussies are embarrassed.
-
Smith and Warner should be stripped and banned by the Australians and for once I think they might be..However for me the ICC punishment is as much a talking point here..Your match fee and a one test ban is not sending out the required message that this is not acceptable is it....

The problem is that as far as the ICC is concerned ball-tampering is not considered the most serious type of offence. It is considered no worse than a bad case of verbal abuse, ie a Level 2.
Clearly this incident shows that the ICC needs to change its code of conduct and penalties.
-
To salvage any credibility Cricket Australia need to ban anyone involved for a lengthy period, make an example of them. Personally I would give David Warner a lifetime ban, just for being David Warner
-

I'm with you on that. Not sure if someone mentioned it here or not but it's a fact that if something bad happens on or off the pitch Warner is usually right in the middle of it.
I got lucky a few years ago and got the chance to see Border, Boon, Hughes etc close up over the course of a few days. They were flinty and hard as nails but seemed decent enough and knew where to draw the line. Warner, however, is an absolute scumbag.
-
it's been going on for years, some of the old Indian and Pakistan teams were masters of it.The difference is these days the tv cameras follow your every move in close up hd..I cant get my head round how they thought they would get away with it..
Warner,Smith and Lehman have to go,its really that simple as any other action will bring the credibility of test cricket into serious question..The icc need, as somebody said to completely overhaul there code of conduct...One or two others in that team are also guilty imo...
Still some of our bowlers could use a tin of pledge and a sanding disc and still struggle to reverse it..lol
-

If they didn't do that to Ricky Ponting they're not going to do it to anyone.
-
According to the latest SSN , the Australian squad have asked for David Warner to be removed from the team hotel before there's an ' incident ' . Read into that what you may

Perhaps now is a good time to tell the story of when I witnessed the results of a particularly gratuitous example of ball tampering.
Warwickshire v Sussex 1983. The game was going nowhere on the last day with Warwickshire seemingly batting for a draw. Imran Khan of Sussex had been injured and was playing as a batsman so it was a surprise when he came on to bowl. Within the space of five overs he'd taken six wickets for six runs including a hat-trick. It was an amazing spell of bowling on what was a slow pitch.
Many years later Imran admitted that he had gouged the ball with a bottle top and was surprised how much he got it to swing. He'd been taught the trick by a senior Pakistan bowler. In those days no-one was really looking out for ball tampering and the match in question wasn't televised.
Ironically Imran's actions probably lost his team the game. Warwickshire's spinners got to work and bowled Sussex out. A dull day was transformed into a fascinating one.
Now I'm not for a minute advocating ball tampering, rather pointing out how spectacular the results can be.
-
Warner is finished, he will be lucky to play top class cricket again. Smith too possibly.
-
Lipsill is the best thing for shining the ball up, also bowlers tend to have long thumb nails . The bottle top thing is as old as the hills
-
Just ask another Ausie what is the best thing to shine a ball, I am sure Massie would be forthcoming.
-
Sithe .. Can anyone remember Fred Trueman had dark hair and always had loads of brylcream on ... strangely always had this habit of putting his right hand not his left (wonder why) through his hair whilst preparing to bowl sussed it out in the test matches on tv well before he got to was it 311 test wickets
the world just accepted that as gamemanship ??
a good nickname for him would be Arthur as in which half are you shining
:chair:
-
Warner, Smith and Bancroft, sent home with significant sanctions to follow in the next 24 hours
-
kop out, senior management group consists of 2 players, Lehman unaware, there are pigs on my roof!
-

Don't forget the bowlers, they were bowling with a ball tampered by an opening batsman, how did they not know. Also what did the 12th man say to Bancroft after being sent out there by Lehman, they must think everyone is stupid
-
Lump your money on South Africa winning the next text, even the odds are 1/3 , Bancroft,Warner and Smith sent home , 3 out of the top 4 in the order. Pinching money 💰

Especially a right- handed player , sorry won't have a word said about a fellow Yorkshireman, especially this great one .

Warner and Smith banned for a year, Bancroft 9 months. I bet they’ll lose out financially as well once the sponsors start leaving the sinking ship
-

I think the whole point of those serious sanctions is to keep sponsors onside. Smith and Warner have also had their IPL contracts torn up.
-
I just cant help thinking that the Australians have been very smart here...They have hit the 3 players hard no doubt at an attempt to bring the situation to a swift end with the media, sponsors all happy they have been heavily punished..
However I don't for one minute believe that nobody else was involved..The bowlers control the ball and decide how they want it worked on by the designated ball polisher based on the conditions..
You are not telling me the bowlers did not realise for one minute that the ball they got back after Bancroft had worked on it was suddenly roughed up after a sandpapering...
Not sure about the coach, but whether he knew or not he is responsible for the team and the buck should stop with him...
What will be interesting is to see the next squad they pick after this series..Wouldn't shock me if one or two players disappeared out the squad...
-
As for Warner he wont play test cricket again regardless of the ban..He was obviously the main culprit in all this..The innocent Aussie players are obvious furious about this and who can blame them..They have now been labelled cheats by proxy and to a professional sportsmen that must hurt deep...He's lucky he got to the airport in one piece..There would be a revolt if his name appeared in a squad in the future..
-
I find it difficult to believe that not one of the quick bowlers who were getting all the swing and reverse swing didn’t know that the ball was being tampered with. Fishy or what!
-
Declare the test null and void and replay it. The Aussies wouldn't dare tamper with the ball and any Aussie bowler would see his wicket haul for the test expunged from the records.
That would send out a proper message
-
I can't believe Lehmann knew nothing about it, Bancfoft is contracted to play County Cricket this summer, surely he's not going to be allowed now?
-

Totally agree.
They all examine the ball before every delivery.

Australia lost the test despite the ball tampering; not sure you'd get South Africa to agree to a replayed test!
-
Nicked from twitter
It’s Mitchell Starc I feel sorry for because according to @CricketAus it was only 3 batsmen who knew about the ball tampering designed to help the bowling attack. Poor f**ker has genuinely believed he’s Wasim Akram all this time........
-
I can't believe Lehmann knew nothing about it, Bancfoft is contracted to play County Cricket this summer, surely he's not going to be allowed now?
Me neither .... and the Bowlers must have known as well
I mean - come on they have a Player designated JUST to keep shining the balls - so surely any Bowler would be "in" on it too
-
There is not one bowler who has played the game at a decent level who has not tried to do something to the ball.
-
True and Lehman has fallen on his sword as well now !
-
Theres only the snake Warner thats not held a presser
-
.... and he was skiliful in not using the words Cheat or Cheating as far as I have seen so far !
-
I think Smiths presser was full of crocodile tears, and I'm sick of hearing they made a mistake, they did n't, they meant to do it, how can that be a mistake?
-
"Our only mistake was getting caught".
-
I wonder if they made a mistake when they were sledging Jonny Bairstow about his dad’s suicide. The bunch of Kitsons.
-

Yet Warner was a bit annoyed with de kock, when he sledged him about his wife getting serviced by Sony Bill Williams. That Warner is a total arsehole
-

I am surprised by the level of sympathy that is now being directed towards Smith, particularly by the media. If the ball-tampering was a one-off incident I might have some sympathy. But the behaviour of the Australian cricket team has been getting worse ever since Smith became captain.
Either he's too weak a leader to turn the culture around, or he's an integral part of it. My suspicion is the latter. I can't forget the image of him and Bancroft laughing their heads off after setting up Bairstow.
Warner might be the worst of them, but Smith was in it up to his neck.
Incidentally someone said Tim Paine, the wicket keeper, had been appointed captain because he was the only decent bloke in the side. Says a lot about Smith's team.

The tears looked real enough to me.

Cant believe they thought they could "tamper" with the Ball a) with impunity and b) without it being noticed
Sure as someone said above ever since the Game has been played there have been attempts to manipulate the Balls condition but when I started watching on TV there was one Camera at one end (only) behind the Stumps. When Bowling was from that end you saw roughly what you see now in the final few delivery strides i.e. the Bowlers back. When they changed ends you saw the Wicket keepers back and the Bowler charging towards you
The Camera followed the shot the fielding etc and that was that. It was a luxury when they added a second Camera at the opposite end
These days I dont know how many Cameras cover a game - and how many of them are searching for "random" things both on the Field and in the Crowd. Already seen Cummins let out a great yawn which was caught on Camera for whatever reason - so even without a tip off (who knows?) the Cameras could have been watching Bancroft especially if he was designated to polish the Ball and "got lucky" when he started to sandpaper it !
There are too many eyes watching everything these days to get away with anything
-
Cant believe they thought they could "tamper" with the Ball a) with impunity and b) without it being noticed
As the Australian ball-tampering scandal escalates, umpires admit the signs were there:

I see Warner has finally faced the media, took questions and never answered a question, just had "I'm here to take full responsibility for my actions" on loop, and threw a few crocodile tears in along the way. Out of the three press conferences from the players, Warners seemed by far to be the most fake

Agreed, this time the tears did look fake.
I also noticed the stage managed hug by his wife as he came into the room.

I've got £40 @ 8/15 ,Australia can't wait until the series is finished and they are back on home soil ,the 3 batsmen they brought in got 15 between them and the bowler Sayers is not better than an average county cricket bowler,he would do well over here in English conditions because he can swing it . It's a bit different bowling in South Africa on their hard fast tracks
-
Wonder what BobG would have to say about this
-
South Africa are still batting 600 in front !!! With just over 4 sessions to play because they reckon most of their bowlers are injured
-

Can Sayers swing the ball when he isn’t packing sandpaper though?
-
Can't believe the ICC haven't come up with the obvious answer. It should be compulsory for one of the umpires to check the ball at the end of each over. It would take 5 seconds and could be done while the fielding side were getting into position. Sorted.
-
Makes you question the validity of our defeats against them
-
Great Cartoon in Mail on Sunday yesterday with a Fast Bowler sending a box of Tissues towards an Aussie Batsman - brill
-
It is not all one way, batsmen have had tape that does the ball no good wrapped around their bats.
Freshly whitened pads, It is , or at least was part of the game. Its the premeditated committee, and planning, that has shocked so many who didn't realise what goes on at the top of the sport.
Most people with just a passing interest in cricket see it as a somewhat gentle game played by gentlemen.
They don't know the half of it.
