Title: ifollow EFL live transmission
Post by: Donny Dub on April 18, 2018, 07:49:39 pm
I’ve been watching EFL live Rovers matches in Dublin using a VPN.  However I could not connect to see last night’s game against Bury, being told they were not licensed to permit me to view it in my location.  How do they know when I’m on a VPN?  Did anyone else have any difficulty seeing it live? Thank you.

You don't need a VPN if you're in Ireland do you? I thought it was only the United Kingdom that it was blocked from.

I’ve given up trying. At first I could set my location as say Paris and successfully watched a couple of away games. Now it just gives me same message as you. Seems to know my location is actually in Uk. I’ve tried 2 different VPN s.

It's highly likely they will have started blocking individual VPN addresses in much the same way as the likes of Netflix do.  When I use my VPN and check my external IP it normally shows the VPN'd location correctly (ie not in the UK) but it's usually geo-tagged as something like "mass communication centre" which is usually a red flag to those services wanting to provide geo-locked services such as ifollow.  It takes them a bit of time to figure out which IP's are VPN services (unless they buy a list of IP's in) but free VPN's and proxies are always the first to go as they are the ones most likely to have multiple connections coming from them making them easier to identify.

Thanks everyone for the explanations.  I rather guessed that they’d sussed me out.  I’ll just have to get over more for the games at the Keepmoat.  It’s unfortunate and surprising that the ifollow license does not cover Ireland but allows viewing from other European countries!

Have you tried not using a VPN and trying to watch?

I watched our last away game using a VPN but had the same issue as you for France, Spain and ROI. Setting the vpn to Portugal got around it.
