Point is, the British press, along with many of its readers will want it to be true, and even when/if it turns out to be unfounded they will still believe it's a true story. It's probably just another typical attempt to destroy the good reputation of a popular Englishman.

Even if it is found out to be true, how many of his persecutors would have turned a blind eye to the story if it had been a foreign couple for fear of being racist?

I totally agree with that last paragraph B.B.

As for the press trying to knock down a popular Englishman, yep, they do it all the time.
As do some of our posters about the English football team.
