Great strike by May for his first goal, looked busy throughout. Bad miss by Beestin first up - he looks low on confidence. Anyone thinking Lawlor should come in for Marosi should jump straight to 1.24.

It was May who set that sitter up for Beestin as well Nick; I wasn't at the game, but looking at the highlights, it was the best I've ever seen May play

In fairness to Beestin, he put a great through ball to Alfie May leaving him one on one with the keeper who he tried to chip.

From those highlights we could much worse than give May a start on Saturday while his confidence is sky high.

I've already said elsewhere that Alfie could have had 2 hat tricks on the night, he was on fire. You have to give it to him, he is really trying to make a go of his opportunity that's been handed to him. He has certainly improved his general fitness and stamina and his confidence seems to be on the rise. He's not the finished article yet, by any means, but with the giant leap in standard of football that he has made, it's not surprising it's taking time to develop him.
It was a joy to watch him last night and he was the strongest player in that front 3 by a country mile. Needs to develop a much more clinical edge to his game, but how many in our first 11 can you aim that at?
Contrast how he came off last night with how he came off in the recent Mansfield annihilation (where JM felt the need to follow him down the tunnel to 'have a word' with him). 100% better. Keep it up, Alfie lad, we're with you all the way.

Hound, who for Marquis or Wilks? Wilks was one of our few successes last week.
He was our main danger going forward, beat the fullback on the left and flighted a great ball over to Marquis who headed wide from six yards, ran past two central defenders and was unceremoniously chopped down just outside the box, and stepped inside the right fullback and had a powerful shot from the edge of the box the keeper saved, but did not know a lot about.
He played very well, but against a very poor side compared with Fleetwood, who when he came on against he did very little, and did not bother them at all like quite a few others on the day, and not particularly his fault but Wilks who I presume most would leave out was far far better.
He will take part no doubt, and if things are not going well his display warrants an earlier appearance than the usual 10 to 15 minutes, and that display and the goals has to be repeated to get a start against better teams.

Wilks was pretty ineffective I thought. Nobody played "very well" at all. He put the effort in no doubt and did well with that one chance but drifted out the game too much. At one stage I noticed he had trotted over whilst we had possession and was essentially stood marking Coppinger. Left us with no option at all down the other flank.
If May starts on Saturday I don't think anyone can complain, he's earned it.

Wilks seems to have a problem, just lately, with consistency of performance level within a game. He's been subbed a number of times, as he just drifts out of matches, possibly due to opposition managers working him out? He still has plenty to offer but he has to dig in and show us that. We still (really) don't have his equivalent within our own ranks.
Personally, I'm less concerned about Wilks and more concerned about Copps and his seemingly fading influence on games.

May's poise looked good, he's looking progressively stronger.
Keepers punching - 1:25 a very simple soft catch at chest height on his line, but Lawlor punches. The risk from that was much higher than if he caught it albeit being a great punch. Not so much picking on Lawlor here but keepers in general, or more so their coaches.

I said that nobody played well. Nobody did play well, and even then, Wilks wasn't among the better performers on a bad day for the whole team. It's not surprising he was hooked by the manager. You have to do more than one or two half decent things to warrant praise in my opinion, especially for an attacker. To say he was "far, far better" than May is plain wrong, May went as close to scoring as anyone did for us with that curled shot and put himself about much more than Wilks did.
May though could probably score 5 goals at Rochdale this weekend and you'd still find a reason to play it down.

RA, I am not getting at May, I am pointing out Wilks was our best attacker last week against a good first division team. Not a poor and weakened second division club side. If any striker should have been substituted for May last Saturday it would have been Marquis, but then his name is not Wilks.
If May keeps it up he cannot be ignored, but one game does not do it, and as I said, if we are not doing well he should be brought on early so he has a chance to show his worth against big defenders like Delaney,McGahey, and McNulty, if he does it will impress me. We will need Wilks to show his speed and strength, and yes play well I think.

I'm not getting involved here but that number 19 for Rovers is some player! He reminds me of that Alfie May fella who, despite all the ridicule in my support of him, I still stand by my claim that he has fabulous potential.

As I said, Mays confidence will be sky high after Tuesdays performance and we ought to be looking to capitalise on that.
Wilks has been hooked a few times of late, usually to allow May to join the game so perhaps look at going the opposite way at Rochdale.
It can’t be denied that Wilks can be a goal threat but he still doesn’t get his head up often enough.

If May is selected I just hope he doesn't miss any chances that come his way. No pressure like, but if he doesn't score at every opportunity he'll be crucified by one or two on this forum!

Coppinger doesn't have the energy to play in midfield, and why would we drop Blair? He's in form at the moment.
