I have hundreds of songs that i love and at some point they were all my favorite, all depends on my mood or maybe whats happening in my life at the time but they all have a special place in my heart.

I’m the same as the above, how the hell do you choose.!

If I had to have a song lyric on my gravestone it would be:

“I would go out tonight, but I haven’t got a stitch to wear”

All along the watchtower, Jimmi Hendrix.
Positively 4th Street, Bob Dylan.
Voodoo Chile, Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Those three have stood the test of time but really too many to choose from.

So so many to choose from but I would pick Bohemian Rhapsody - by a mile - as my all time favourite and then decide which of the thousands would get the honour of the Number 2 Spot

As several have said, it's impossible to choose. Changes every day and every minute.

So far today, my favourite songs of all time have been:

Therese: The Bodines
Alone Again Or: Love
Jet Boy: New York Dolls
Never Never Land: Unkle
Just Like Honey: Jesus & Mary Chain
This Fear of Gods: Simple Minds
I Feel Love: Donna Summer
Ohne Dich: Laibach
How High: The Charlatans
Never Let Me Down: Depeche Mode
Tour de France: Kraftwerk
Velouria: Pixies

It'll be a totally different set by bedtime.

Too many to post, best idea just to type the titles into YouTube when you’re on there..

Mood affects my choice big time..  here are just a few of mine that always seem to crop up..

This charming man - the smiths
A forest - the cure
Thinking of you - colourfield
Teenage kicks - the undertones..
At 17 - Janis Ian
Private investigations - dire straits
Will you - hazel o’connor
I’m in love with a German filmstar - the passions
Ace of spades - Motörhead
Song to the siren - this mortal coil...

I could go on..

Great tracks that I played to death on the car cassette player.

Voodoo Chile
Do you like Don't Cry for Me Argentina too?

A fun nod to an apparent typo there, but Idler is indeed correct. It's Voodoo Chile, a 15 minute masterpiece by Jimi Hendrix. It is just a phonetic contraction of the word 'Child', mind, he's not singing about South America or his dinner.

Of course Idler may in fact mean the follow-up, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), which is the popular 5 minute version. Both appear on the Electric Ladyland album and both are absolutely brilliant.

My favourite song is probably "Bleeding Me" by Metallica, but I agree there are so many significant songs that could be in contention for me. The single best riff of all time, in my opinion, is the opener to "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits.

Oh, and Turnbull mentioned the 12" version of I Am the Resurrection by the Stone Roses, have to agree that is one of the best songs of all time, glorious from start to finish.

I have a few go to songs that always have places on my faves list.

In no particular order:
REM everybody hurts
U2 bad
Simple Minds alive and kicking
Roy Orbison she's a mystery to me
Oasis slide away
James getting away with it
Killers human
Stone Roses made of stone
Charlatans one to another
Depeche mode in your room
Visage fade to grey
Ultravox vienna
Richard ashcroft lonely soul
Babybird bad old man
Coldplay clocks
Radiohead street spirit
Queen who wants to live forever
Blur to the end

17 for starters! Had to add the last two as 15 ain't enough - need another 3 for 20 so I'll go:

Snow patrol crack the shutters
Stereophonics dakota
And
Dire straits romeo and juliet

Bob Dylan

"Girl from the North Country"

"Don't think Twice it's Alright"

"Ballad in Plain D"

Nobody wrote love songs like Dylan, because most of them were autobiographical, and referred to his doomed affair with the love of his life, Suze Rotolo, who's pictured with him on the famous "Freewheeling" album cover, walking down the street in Greenwich village.

Suze ended up marrying someone else, and is now sadly deceased. A tragic love story.

Good choices SS but I think Girl from the North Country is a reference to Echo his 1st girlfriend and to say Ballad in Plain D is a love song is pushing it a bit it'more of a rant against Suze sister Carla who detested Dylan.
My choices could be any of Dylans hundreds of songs but you are right many of his songs are about the women in his life and are usually the best along with his Finger pointing songs
Sad eyed Lady of the Lowlands
Grooms still waiting at the altar
Changing of the Guards

Thanks Raven, you're right with most of that, although to be fair, I did use the word "most", as I had reservations about "Girl from the North Country", realising that he was born and raised in Pennsylvania, and it might have been about someone from there.

Regarding "Ballad in Plain D", you're right about most of it being a rant about  sister Carla, but there was a lot of heart wrenching love in there as well, as that was the night when the relationship ended; "My mind it was mangled, I ran into the night, leaving all of love's ashes behind me".

If I've got any of the above words wrong mate, you'll have to correct me.

Some wonderful, songs in this thread but amazed so far nothing mentioned by two of my favourite bands The Eagles and The Doors

I also like some older more folky bands like Steeleye Span, Pentangle and Steely Dan.

I still shiver at the memory of being driven in a VW Scirocco on a country road between Maastricht and Aachen at horrific speeds by a crazy German friend during a violent thunderstorm with ‘Riders on the Storm’ on at full volume.
