It was superb...but it wasn't planned like that.
The ball to Whiteman was for him to have a shot.
But it had too much weight on it, forcing him wide.
Fortunately he was able to cross for Marquis to head in.

I thought that too. Good bit of improv from Whiteman though.

McCann said Gerrard works the set pieces with the players defending and attacking

It ended up that way but I also thought it was supposed to be set up for Ben to have a shot.

Especially how Marquis drifted back into the goalscoring position after taking earlier part in the move..

It was planned, just Whiteman has to readjust his position to cross after receiving the ball. McCann turned and the whole bench congratulated one particular coach (maybe it was Gerrard) when the goal went in so it was clearly a planned training ground move executed to perfection.

Since when did a planned set-piece include the receiver having to beat an opposition player after being closed down rapidly in order to make the space to get a cross in?

It was planned that whiteman crossed it, obviously it wasn’t planned that he would have to beat a man beforehand

We'll give em the benefit of doubt.

We seem to have an abundance of options at free kicks now and it's good to see them working at different routines.

I think Andrew can learn a bit from Crawford in terms of the delivery. To have equal deadly options from both sides of the pitch would be awesome.

Not quite up to Ian Harte standard yet, but practice makes perfect!

I agree, it is good to vary free kicks and corners.
However there is always a big groan whenever we take a short corner.

There's groans when the ball goes backwards, sideways or within 2 yards of an opposing player!
