Title: Peston
Post by: wing commander on February 28, 2019, 09:09:25 am
Did anybody watch it last night, think it sums the whole thing right now..As fascinating as it was,the end result seemed to be the Mp's spent more time arguing with each other from the same partys as they did with the opposition..Obviously Soubary is now independent but the chasm of different views from every single one of them really does show the total split in ALL party's right now..

Right now? They've all been split over Europe for decades. But for those decades it wasn't going to affect the country as it is now.

It's not just the politicians and political parties that are split WC, the whole of the UK is split.

The referendum has proved to be the modern day equivalent of opening Pandora's Box.  Whatever happens now there will be a large number of unhappy losers, (with a No Deal Brexit there will be a large number of unhappy winners).

The result of the referendum was too close for there to be any other outcome.  If we leave the EU then 16+ million voters, (and a lot who were too young to vote), will be very unhappy; if we remain in the EU a lot of the 17+ million who voted leave will feel betrayed.

If we leave with May's deal then a lot of both the 16+ million and 17+ million will be unhappy.  If we leave with No Deal then I can see a lot of very hard times ahead and the ultimate break up of the United Kingdom.  If we remain then there is the distinct possibility of civil disturbances given the nature of the militant right wing people who formed a good part of that 17 million leave voters.

The referendum was stupid.  We are now paying the price for that stupidity and will do so for quite some time, irrespective of the eventual outcome.  Apart from the very rich, there will be no winners.

It's not just the UK that's split, I've lots of friends who spend a lot of time in the US, and they say that the hatred between the North and South is as bad now as it was in the Civil War.

It's not a North/South thing any more. It's urban Vs rural. America's urbanising rapidly and becoming a different country as a result. It's inevitable that that leads to cultural frictions.

Trump's busily using the divisions to drum up personal support as well, which doesn't help.
