Where does Grant rank?
No 1 for me.
I absolutely adore the man.
-
Mark Weaver must be up there. ..
-
McCann top for me as well. Dickov as a bloke is up there as he was a genuinely nice fella, just ultimately didn't have what it took.
-
Mark Weaver must be up there. ..
He was more than likeable. He deserved f**king.

Mark Weaver must be up there. ..
Just before my time. Care to elaborate/educate?

Part of a very dark time for the club

Mark Weaver must be up there. ..
Dangling, preferably.

Grant McCann has the potential to be one of our best managers, if not the best. Christ he is only 39. Head on straight. Very honest and direct. And a very good coach and reader of games. Cannot speak highly enough of the man.
Have to say I didn't really know of him when he was appointed but what stood out for me was that he had apparently watched all the Rovers games from the previous season, done his homework and came with a plan of what he wanted to implement. That is massive IMHO. He actually put the legwork in beforehand to hit the ground with some momentum.
Absolutely love the guy. Cliff too for that matter.
I genuinely cannot wait to see what happens between now and August.

By his knackers.

Of the managers I met, Billy Bremmner was a really top bloke, Sammy Chung and Dave Penney were too.

I'd second that post. McCann has been amazing, and credit to the board for appointing him.
All we want now is the backing from the board to make an even bigger push for next season.
Let's enjoy the ride.

Dave Penney was always likeable I thought. Dickov too even if his actual managerial abilities were severely lacking.
I have a great affinity for the manner of Sean O'Driscoll. Understated doesn't do it justice, and very clever too.
-
For “likeable” there can be only one winner.
Step forward Sammy Chung. What a gent.

I met every manager from Billy Bremner days -
got along great with all of them with one exception;
On one occasion I found myself at the training ground during the Conference years - I remember talking to Mark Sale & some other injured players - anyway Dave Penney walked in asked me what I was doing there & told me to “f**k off out of here” - I said I was going anyway & on the way out I turned back and told him I’d still be coming long after he’d gone

Sammy Chung was a hell of a bloke. And Billy too, but Grant is going the right way about being up there with them.
-
Steve Beaglehole is a nice bloke, can remember him coming over to me and my mate when we were kids to tell us he’d just signed Mike Jeffrey on a permanent deal, we were ecstatic!

Clean forgot him!! I agree though, he was a really nice guy.

In fairness I don't think we've had too many unlikeables in recent memory. Whilst Dickov may have been an average manager he was a fantastic chap.
Wignall for being totall average and alienating Duerden and an accompanying fan base?
Weaver cos Weaver?
Begara despite the amazing shirtnumber ruse?
Weaver cos weaver?
Ferguson may be debateable but I think most others (Penney, SOD, G McC, Bremner, Beaglehole, Chung) can be counted as popular - some just faced more obstacles than others.

I remember once I'd heard a rumour that Gary "Sumo" Brabin was going to Coventry (this is the pre-internet days) and I decided to phone the club up and ask them straight. The receptionist took my question and said "I think I can put you through to someone who might know."
The next thing, Sammy Chung is on the line. Had a lovely chat for about 20 mins. Coventry were never in for Brabs, btw.

Talking of phone calls..
I once rang the club to ask about season ticket prices. Billy Bremner himself picked up the phone and said 'Hello, Doncaster Rovers'.
I was gobsmacked but asked my question and he said 'hang on, we'll be one minute'.
A minute passes, loud bang as phone gets picked up again and it is still BB who spends the next few minutes taking me through the season ticket options and the list of new player acquisitions (this was pre-internet obviously and living way out of area I had bog all idea who we'd signed).
Needs must I suppose. Club on a shoestring and he had to muck in, but thought it was great that all this wasn't beneath him.
-
Did you get a season ticket?
-
Not really popular at Donny but Dave Cusack left us & took Rovvrum down so worth a mention

+1

Did you get a season ticket?
I did.
I think it was the season we came down from Division 3 after the first BB promotion so 83/84?

What about Dave Cowling? ;)
