Doncaster Rovers: McCann may be powerless to prevent Marquis departure this summer
It has been a roller-coaster of a season at Doncaster Rovers, hasn’t it?
Despite beginning the campaign as one of the favourites to be relegated from League One, Grant McCann’s side exceeded all expectations by qualifying for the play-offs earlier this month.
With Rovers facing a semi-final showdown with a Charlton Athletic side who finished fifteen points above them during the regular season, not many gave them a chance of prevailing over two-legs.
Although they would lose 2-1 to the Addicks at the Keepmoat Stadium on May 12th, a spirited display in the return tie last Friday culminated in them being eliminated from the play-offs on penalties at The Valley.
After being consigned to another year in the third tier, Donny could end up being powerless to prevent their talisman John Marquis from leaving this summer.
A stand-out performer for McCann’s side during the 2018/19 campaign, it could be argued that without the £225k-rated ace’s (via Transfermarkt) 26 goal contributions, the Yorkshire-based outfit would not have been able to secure a top-six finish.
Having displayed his vast array of talents both at League One and League Two level during his three-year stint with Rovers, Marquis could be tempted by interest from elsewhere over the coming months, especially if he is contacted by sides who are in the Championship.
After only being given sporadic chances to impress in the second tier by Millwall in the past, it would be understandable for the forward to want to prove himself in one of the most competitive divisions in world football.
Indeed, if Donny do end up losing Marquis when the transfer window opens in July, they could very well end up struggling next season.
Yet by using the money from the former Northampton Town loanee’s sale to bring in a number of valuable additions to what is already a solid squad, there is no reason why they cannot continue to thrive in League One under the guidance of McCann.
225K????????????
Times it by 10 at least.... what a bell..

Absolute nothing article. Copy and paste every season, swap name of top scorer and losing playoff club. Job done. Next.

At least he’s quoted a source, Christ knows where they’ve got that from though.

No one at the club mentioned anything about Marquis going anywhere, they turned down an offer because that want to build a team around him and Whiteman . McCann IS talking about an even stronger team for next season because he knows that we weren’t strong enough this time around . The players staying will have at least a 2 year contract going into 19/20 So promotion gives those players an in contract benefit of being at a Championship club 20/21 and with this in mind we will need to build the team capable of competing at a higher level .

Marquis is under contract.. it will take a significant amount of money to make the club take notice..

Yes, silly season is here but we know to take little notice. Someone only has to breathe a name on social media and it's perpetuated and regurgitated.

Also if he’s contacted by side in the Championship while still under contract that would be tapping up
