Title: Back Four
Post by: andyst79 on June 19, 2019, 06:52:20 pm
Starting four looking really strong now , potentially best defence in the League?! Also with Whiteman in front of them that's a good solid platform to build the rest of the team around.

Nice to see a positive post!

Halliday (RB)       Wright      Anderson     James  (LB)

I could potentially see them lining up to start on our opening day, we definitely need at least one more CB,probably two however to provide cover/competition. Especially with Wrights injury record.

Left back position is probably fine now with Amos to cover on the bench for James.  Potentially need a second RB to stand in maybe too.

It's a very good core, just needs couple more bodies in.

Not sure we can say potentially the best back four in the league at this stage of proceedings.

I understand Blair has offered to be 2nd choice RB if needed.

He grew into the role as the season progressed to be fair to him.
Quite a few times too his speed allowed him to get back and make good covering, saving tackles.

The next in line RB after Blair is Walker from U 18 we do not have a out and out RB in the U 23’s

No reason why Blair can't push on and be first choice in midfield but likely to be great back up there as well as cover at RB. Sensible to make use of his flexibility and save on a wage, at least until the season dictates otherwise.

And Andy Boyle has just burst onto the free transfer scene was at Ross County last season now released by Preston - some of you thought he was better than the other loanee Anderson

Completely forgot about Blair, more than happy with Halliday as first choice and Blair potentially there to cover if we are desperate.

It would be nice to have two brilliant players in every position but as a league one club and a normal league one budget (I assume), it’s not really realistic.

We could do with a couple of CBS for sure though, probably atleast one older head, and maybe somebody who could fill in at full back if needed.

Did Joe Wright play right back for us previously? Or did I just imagine that?

Joe Wright actually looked decent at RB against Charlton too

Ideally, you'd want a CB or utility CB as cover and that will depend on how McCann rates the up and coming youth. Whiteman could fill in CB but that would be a waste. I would agree we need to look for a back up from a Freebie or loan.

It will be great to start the season off with two specialist full backs who defend first and can develop their attacking prowess as the season progresses.

I'm expecting better things from Sadlier and Crawford this term. We should underestimate Blair contribution when in his favoured role. That leaves the midfield to be filled out and the strike department to be resolved.

Crawford in particular needs to consistently show his value. Cannot help but think he is like that other Scottish lad we signed Dean Shiels who huffed and puffed but was never consistent enough or had enough presence about him.

Crawford needs to crank it up a bit next season, big season for him. He showed flashes of what he can do but needs to be more consistent and prominent in games.

If McCann says to Crawford "I'm giving you a run in the team, first choice" in midfield alongside Whiteman and a new signing to fill the Kane/Rowe role, then hopefully Ali will take it with both hands and kick on. I think he could be a real asset for us and I agree he showed glimpses of it last season without ever really breaking into stride fully in terms of consistency.
