I'm surprised nobody's commented how good it was to watch them last night.
A welcome distraction to see how well they played both in attack and defence. Scored some good goals after some good build up play.
The standard of ladies football has gone up a notch since the last World Cup and I hope more people put their prejudices to one side and watch them into the semis and hopefully beyond.
I think Phil Neville has done a great job with them. They have all the ingredients to win it.
-
Some bad mistakes at the back that better teams will punish but fantastic going forward. When we had the ball, some of the play out from the back was exceptional. I hope John Stones has been watching it on repeat since last night!
-
Attack and defence was good, a few misplaced or weak passes in midfield.
I saw the USA play in Paris and they look very strong, but England has a great chance..
Lucy Bronze should take the penalties.!
-
Millie Bright was awful last night, Steph Houghton must be sick of covering for her
-
Ex-Donny Belles Millie Bright always seems to play well in the first half of matches, and then tires and drops off in the second half. In fact, our second half performances in general seem to drop down a notch.
I hope France or the USA don't exploit this.
-
Great result and the third goal was cracking. Standard of passing in midfield is worse than a pub team though. Absolutely terrible.
-
Call me a caveman but I just cannot get interested or invested in it what so ever. Last night I elected for love island over the women’s World Cup quarter final, would love to have my mind changed but I just feel no connection to it all, like it’s a completely different sport

I urge you to watch it because its certainly not a different sport.
A mate of mine last night said “It's actually quite good“ He was surprised at the standard of football and competitiveness.
I think Millie was over criticised a bit by the commentators but I agree she does seem to tire in the second half but when fresh she's one of the better no nonsense centre half's in the world. Steph Houghton provides the brains and leadership in a very good pairing.

It was a genuinely good game by anyone's standard, you missed out. I'd recommend giving it a watch on the Iplayer if it's on there. End to end at times, very exciting. Yes, it's played at a slower pace than the men's game but technically the standard is very good. Also the women tend to spend a lot less time t**tting about on the floor trying to get people sent off, which is refreshing.
-
Doesn't interest me, good luck to them though
-
TBF Millie Bright had a virus and was doubtful however Houghton was amazing and the winger who came on as a replacement late on looked good too
-
It’s girl stuff and should be applauded for being girlie.....
And that Neville is still in the Peter Beardsley mould of a gargoylian thang...lol
-
It’s girl stuff and should be applauded for being girlie.....
...what?
-
I wasn’t too fussed about watching it before the tournament started but having watched a few games now I am really enjoying it.
Some of the skills are equal to anything in the mans game.
Agreed that some of the midfield passing was dodgy at times but to say, as that post by Southstandfan, that it is pub team standard is totally ridiculous.
The local pub team that I occasionally see when I take my dogs out struggle to put three successive passes together.
-

I’m not quite sure what you mean, but it sounds like b*llocks to me..

As the father of a girl who was a top athlete until her career was cut short by glandular fever I have learned to have full respect for women athletes whatever the sport .They still bring out disrespectful comments from male chauvinists who are fortunately a dying breed across the world.
-
I don’t think they played that well. USA will beat them in the semi-final.
-
I have nothing against women athletes and love watching athletics, cycling etc but just find this football thing so hyped up and so meaningless. Can't gel with it at all. Some of my feelings may come from my dislike of the manager who I think is a complete tosser. Perhaps if they made him wear a frock it might make it more meaningful.
-
I think the women's World Cup is great and the standard is very high. Some of the comments above are ridiculous imo.

Hyped up.??
It’s the World Cup, of course it’s going to be hyped up.!
Especially with England in the semi finals..
Yes the game is different, to a degree, simply due to power and speed compared to men’s football..
However that doesn’t mean that the women’s game can’t be skillful and technically very good.
Take England’s 3rd goal, that wouldn’t have looked out of place in top class men’s football.
Watch this in the context of what it is and try not to relate it to the men’s game, and you’ll soon find yourself getting into it.
I saw the USA play live, and believe me, they are very very good..
-
I suppose we can finally tell the Norwegians that they took a hell of a beating.

Chauvinist alert !!!!!
Don’t rate female athletes and not inclined to promote them...just my opinion, ...but I’m sure someone will make an “ ist or an ism “ out of it.....
-
To my surprise I’m enjoying watching England’s matches in this tournament.
So much so that I’m now watching tonight’s game between France and USA and there’s some good football on display.
The best two teams I’ve seen so far in this World Cup.
As for the comment that Phil Neville should wear a frock..... you need to grow up.

Possibly one of the most sweeping statements I’ve seen on here for a long time.
You don’t rate female athletes? Really? None of them, ever?
-

That has statistically to be proven ...not caring about female sports is not sexist or chauvinistic...it’s just a choice....

Hardly sweeping! ... it’s a very nailed down bonafide fact...
I know female sport exists, I can probably name a few females that have competed in certain things....but I get a big enough buzz from watching Donny ......
I probably am a bit of a chauvinist on reflection...infact I insist on opening doors for my wife....( not because I think she isn’t capable)
.and shock horror, she actually likes being treat has a lady....
-
I've never really watched women's football before but having seen the England games in this tournament I'm thoroughly enjoying it.
Biggest drawback is a bloke - Jonathan Pearce - I think he's an awful commentator.
-
It's great to watch some football that isn't spoilt by continual pushing, shoving, holding, shirt-pulling, diving, timewasting and surrounding and trying to intimidate the ref at every bloody decision they make and lots more snarky cheating. They might not be as physical or skilful as professional men, but by heck it's decent free-flowing stuff.
-
This France-USA match is absolutely superb. A joy to watch.

Perhaps I need to help you by explaining what the phrase ‘sweeping statement’ means in this context.
It is applied to a statement of opinion which is too generalised to have any specific relevance.
For example ‘I hate Germans’ or ‘Italians are lazy’ or ‘Musicals are boring’ or ‘I don’t rate female athletes’.
The last statement, which was yours, is NOT a “nailed down bonafide fact” as you call it.
It’s an opinion. A very generalised opinion which is, I suggest, impossible to substantiate.
In other words it’s a ‘sweeping statement’.
I’d even call it a stupid and bigoted statement. Just my opinion.

This France-USA match is absolutely superb. A joy to watch.
well said BST, really enjoying it...
-
That was a cracking game.
Can’t help feeling a bit sorry for France.
And to be honest, the first I’ve seen from USA of some of the cynical stuff we’re so used to in the men’s game.
Looking forward to the semi-final now. England are up against the best team in the world.
Come on you Lionesses!
-
What a fantastic game of football, really enjoying this world cup. England will meet the best team i've seen in the competition, but i have no doubts the girls can do it.
-
A great game tonight, played at a very fast pace as well.
Very physical but not a dirty game.
On Tuesday we will have the pleasure of seeing Lucy Bronze up against Megan Rapinoe.
Now that is something I am really looking forward to watching.
Finally, on a personal note, that Alex Morgan is a seriously good looking woman.

It's like stepping back in time a few decades sometimes, reading stuff on here.
Someone else saying it'd be interesting if Phil Neville wore a frock!? Absolutely baffling.

Why doesnt everyone just ignore this sha66y bloke.
He is obviously just having a laugh and fishing for responses.

Agreed, been some cracking games. I think the skill levels are just about on par with the men.
They are technically very impressive.
The standard at the top end of the women’s game is getting better and better year on year.
-

Compare the standard of midfield play to this abomination from the pinnacle of the English men's game just thirty years back.

I can see the real battle between the USA left and England’s right..
The USA no 23 Press was outstanding vs Chile when Rapinoe was rested.. USA won’t start with both.
As for comparing strength vs men, that USA keeper has one hell of a kick on her.!

What a ridiculous sexist comment arkseyrover. Shame on you.
-
The USA left back looks very useful too..
England will have to be at their best to beat the USA but if they keep a lid on sloppy passing, they have a great chance..
-
People can have whatever opinion they like, i'm tired of all this pc and social engineering bs, watch what you say you might offend someone! Having your own opinion will soon be illegal.
I do personally like watching womens sports, like Tennis and Beach Volleyball 😂
-
It’s been entertaining, and like has been mentioned it’s refreshing to not see diving, grappling etc.
Although I think it’s nonsensical to try and compare to the men’s game, it’s two very different sports.
It’s like women’s tennis, it’s often much more entertaining than the blokes but there’s no way the women would beat the men, it’s a completely
Different game

Respecting the women’s game for what it is isn’t being PC..
Pointing out the outdated and chauvinistic views is perfectly OK IMHO..
Have whatever opinion you like, perfectly OK too.
-
personally I have enjoyed the woman's world cup better than the men's qualifiers. more exiting game play than watching this [stale ] England game play. no one runs anymore, all pass back , start again. no more gigs takes on seven and scores moments. not quite there but entertaining.

and the FACT remains a fact....to me, !

I wouldn’t say they were poor or even crap.....I just don’t watch them
-
Big up the girls. Looking forward to Tuesday's game. Can't see us turning USA over but you never know.

You're right Hound.
I have enjoyed watching England in this tournament anyway, and I think the game with the USA next week may end up being the biggest match in English women's football history.

Dickos.
Of course the current women wouldn't beat the current men.
But the current women would beat the best men's teams from the 60s without breaking sweat. For anyone who doesn't believe that, as I've said many times, go and look at the YouTube footage of the 1962 men's WC final between Brazil and Czechoslovakia. There were more misplaced 5 yard passes in the first 30 seconds of that game than in the entire match tonight, and it was mostly played at walking pace. The USA women from tonight would have put 10 past that 1962 Czechoslovakia side.
THAT's the really interesting thing. Because the current quality in women's football is coming about despite relatively few girls and women playing football, so there's a small pool from which to find the best.
If the current rapid improvement in standards continues and if more girls take up the game, it'll be fascinating to see by how much women will be able to close the gap on men.
-
To watch womens football with any clarity you have to bin the comparison with the mens game .
It's like comparing Raffa Nadal to Serena Williams , clearly he would blow her off the court but that doesn't make Serena a poor tennis player .
I've never watched the womens game before this world cup and I have to say I've enjoyed it .
If I've enjoyed watching it then that has to be a good thing .
-
If opening doors for women is your badge you are indeed far far behind in the societal evolution .

The game has evolved so much since the 60s
Fitter players, mass improvement in training methods, dietary methods, balls and pitches much better.
The game is much faster now, if the players in the 60s were around now then they’d be as good as the players that are playing these days.
It’s like saying a car in the 1960s isn’t as good as a car now, but that’s because things have developed.
So I’m not sure it means the women have closed the gap on men, the women’s game has improved significantly but so has the men’s
-
Any sport can be enthralling in its own context..
Take the Olympics for example.. I have no day to day interest in sports like cycling, heptathlon, rowing, archery, curling etc. Same with the tennis at Wimbledon.
But if I start to watch it, and there’s a tight evenly matched contest - especially with English or GB competitors - then it can be very interesting to watch and to enjoy the occasion, the tension of competition and the highs and lows.
That goes for men and women’s events. Therefore, it’s the same with women’s football.
Some people are so much used to and entrenched in the men’s game that they can’t see the wood for the trees where women’s football is concerned.
France vs USA last night was as gripping as anything in the men’s WC last summer..
-
Standard of football has been generally high. Although some of the goalkeeping has been poor. The Argentine keeper excepted.
-
I was going to watch a game but I heard a group of twelve year olds were putting down their jumpers for goal posts on Westwoodside playing fields, so I had a walk down to watch a higher quality game.
-
Standard of football has been generally high. Although some of the goalkeeping has been poor. The Argentine keeper excepted.
The Chilean goalkeeper who plays for PSG was outstanding vs the USA. Kept them down to 3-0 almost single handed..
Chile has just over 700 registered women players, the USA over 1.5 million (according to the bbc).
-
Westwoodside is that close to Bermondsey
-
Choosing to watch a group of random children run around instead of sitting at home and watching adults play in a high quality football match is certainly an interesting choice.
(And yes, I know it was a facetious attempt at humour rather than a genuine thing)
-
I'm sick now that we have to play the mighty USA in the semi-final. I'm just watching the Italy/Holland game, and England would blow either of them away.
-
We will........if Holland do get to the Final.
-
With both the Copa America and Africa Cup of Nations happening, I haven't had time to see womens games.
-

Interesting that isn’t it?
-

I don’t quite understand how far the societal evolution has progressed if I’m still far behind it?
-
I stand by my comment that someone jumped on in the other thread and I never replied to. The women's game is entertaining but the standard (particularly of passing), is very poor. In 2016 the Australian women's team were beaten 7-0 by an under 15 boys side. The women were ranked number 5 in the world.
As much as people might say don't compare them to the men's side... I think in fighting for equal exposure and pay, it must be taken into account.
Good luck to them and I hope they go all the way. But... Still in my opinion would be beaten by a decent pub team and absolutely thrashed by any semi pro non league side.
-
Equal pay for representing your country is a fair argument.
At club level, for the pro players, that’s down to the financial status of the clubs..
-
Whatever the opinions are it women against women at international level. It’s not women against boys or men. The ladies are representing our country if you have no interest so be it a lot of other people have shown interest.
-

I've been involved in local football, and I've never seen any pub team that could pass and move like the England and USA women's teams.
-
That’s because they’re playing against other women though.
The average non league footballer even at north east counties level is a very good footballer.
A side like armthorpe or rossington would give the England national side a trouncing
-

They're not pub teams Dickos, they're semi-professionals. Big difference.
-
Ok mate
I was just commenting on the cmmment he made about a semi pro side thrashing them. Was just agreeing.
Although there has been a few pub teams that were as good as sides like armthorpe over the years
-
Just to clarify I'm not detracting from their achievements and as I said I find it entertaining and will be watching them tomorrow.
My point I suppose is that there is a big push to put them on a par with the men's team (for example the BBC stating they have broken this record and that record against the men's England side), if we are comparing then we can't pick and choose the metrics we are using.
The argument (I introduced) about it being a pub team standard or semi pro standard is semantics. What I'm getting at is, despite the media narrative that this is a sport on par with the men's game, it is actually nowhere near and if that were more widely recognised/admitted to, people could just enjoy the game for what it is. And the women involved could be compensated according to their own merits as sports stars/entertainers, not over inflated to compare to the vastly more competitive men's game.
-
I agree. Women’s football has evolved. Unfortunately not near men’s football. Before anyone says, that’s not a sexist comment. But, come on England. Do your best, that’s all anyone asks
-
The financial argument being put forward, of equal pay, essentially comes from the USA women's team. But there's a major reason for that, and that's because the USA women's team generates more revenue for the USA FA than the men's team. In the last 3 years the wome's team generated £40m and the men's team £39m, but the women's bonus is £87k and the men's equivalent bonus would be £321k.
-
Just settling down to watch our girls.
Got my drink, ready to cheer them on.
Come on England.
-
Rapinoe on the bench might be good for England but watch out for her replacement, Press..
-
0-1.. powerful header from Press..
-
Bright looking very dodgy in our back line.
-
What a great goal.
-
1-1.. super cross field pass, control, great cross and a classy finish from White..
-
Bright looking very dodgy in our back line.
Very surprised she got picked tonight, she was the weak link against Norway
-
Any of these players ever play for the Belles or am I about 10 years too late?
-
Millie Bright, at centre half.
-
Millie bright did I believe
-
Bright looking very dodgy in our back line.

Yep, her passing is a liability.
-
Nearly 2-1 for us.
Why do keepers always dive when the ball has gone past them.
-
It's to make it look like we had it under control when in actual fact we were shitting ourselves!
-
1-2 at half time.. about right IMHO.
-
1-2 at half time.. about right IMHO.
Agreed.
The USA are much more powerful than us but we are still in the game.
We need to be a bit better at keeping the ball.
-
Yep. When we pressed them, they made mistakes. Just giving them too much time to pick a pass. Easier said than done but we're still well in this!
-
Ref seems to be doing a good job!

This obsession with playing out from the back regardless of the number of red shirts is laughable!!! Have they not seen the men in the euro nations!!! Sometimes a boot to halfway isn't a bad choice!!

Goal being ruled out was a bit of a sickener but correct decision sadly. Hopefully that's not all she wrote.

If it wasn’t for VAR the assistant ref might have put the flag up..
-
So we're going to start ruling goals offside because my nose was slighty in front of your nose
-
f**ked it. So close but so far, typical England.
-
Can’t believe we got a penalty for that. If I were an American fan I’d see the miss as justice.
-

Irrespective, she WAS offside, and not just by a nose.
-
var is a farce that was never a penalty, and we now have offside ruled by who has the biggest feet.
-
Ruining football this VAR, oh we can't have human error and talking points, load of bollox it is
-
Millie Bright deservedly sent off there - if that challenge was against England the commentators would be having a field day.
-
Ruining football this VAR, oh we can't have human error and talking points, load of bollox it is
So you do agree that the decision was correct then.
-
Ruining football this VAR, oh we can't have human error and talking points, load of bollox it is
Completely agree. You can't properly celebrate goals anymore (when VAR is used), as you have that doubt that there'll be some infraction that changes it.
I thought it was only for clear and obvious errors, not a back up for the ref if they want another look for the most minor fractional issues.

Lol...it’s like you lot are waiting for cocaine but debating the merits of crushed anadin as a placebo......
-
It’s the offside rule that needs altering, not vars fault.
It’s going to cause chaos in the prem if that’s going to happen every week.
In cricket they don’t overturn the decision of its marginal even if incorrect

Maybe base it around centre of mass/gravity, as opposed to an individual limb
-
England have been the better team second half.

Quite simply, not good enough! Can't score from penalties, can't take throw in's! Basics! Typical England, men or women!....
-
It was offside, it looked offside in real time.. end of argument..
Such a shame we didn’t score the penalty, even though it was a soft one..
However over the 90 mins I think the result was correct. The USA are ranked #1 for good reasons..
-
We gave it a good go but as IDM says, the USA had more than us and deserved their win.
Typical of some people to have a go at England players.
-
England's game management in extra time was amateurish - foul throws, weak shots from 30 yards, giving fouls away. If Millie Bright is one of the best female defenders in the country then Women's Football has got a long way to go.
Well done England. A welcome distraction during the summer recess from the "proper" game, but it will never be more than a curiosity to me I'm afraid.

We didn't play well enough tonight but, had we have scored the penalty it would have been interesting to see the outcome cos USA were rattled.
We've see VAR working again. Two correct decisions. Close call or not, it's the correct outcome.

No....actually reading the debates and crazy comments....like I said , I gave it nearly 12 mins and found it very boring and uninteresting ....just my opinion mind...
-
If you find it boring and uninteresting then I would question whether you are a fan of football. It had all the ingredients. Same nerves, same tension, same guile and endeavour. It's football irrespective of the sex of the players.
-
That's it then, just New Zealand and Williamson to get over tomorrow. A poor penalty, but at least the BBC news could go ahead.
It would have made a good final, but hey they have done well, against a team who set the standard for women's football at the moment, it is no disgrace to lose so narrowly, but the best team won.
-
Just watched highlights on news and they went to Sheff utd training ground and one of the girls watching it had a Rovers shirt on.Good lass,on local rivals turf too. :scarf: :scarf: :scarf: :scarf: :scarf:

I think it also shows as a nation we are mentally weaker. Both men and women having the same weaknesses in big games. Close but not close enough despite being able to more than match our opponents. The mens U21s showed the same frailties recently.
-
Fantastic advert for women’s football. If you were not entertained by that tonight you are not a football fan.
The technical ability of the top women players is if a very high standard.
Very fine margins decided that game. The off side goal and the penalty miss.
The England team can hold their heads high, they did us proud.
They gave it everything and it is nothing to be ashamed about losing to the best team in the world. USA will surely go on to win it again.

IDM’s comments were fair and reasonable.

The girls have done really well, and have narrowly lost to the best women's team in the world; but hey, it's the Euros in 2 years time and we must surely be the favourites for that this time.
My only concern is that I feel we need better defenders. I'm sure Phil Neville will sort that out.
-
Bronze and Houghton are right up there with the best to be fair. Millie Bright has been a bit dodgy throughout.

IDM said it looked offside in real time.
My first reaction was that White was offside.
The match commentator said he thought it would be ruled out.

I wouldn't say we'll be favourites at this stage. A European side will ultimately have got to the World Cup Final instead of England, possibly the reigning European Champions. But England have done a good job here and will absolutely be in the conversation.

No, I thought it was offside and VAR confirmed it.. you disagreed and that’s fine, but you randomly chose to call me a Kitson using the forum Kitson word.
-
As for the performance, in my opinion the main difference between the sides was too many misplaced passes by England. They needed to be better at keeping the ball. As for everything else they were more or less on a par with the USA.
-
The cross and especially finish for the England first were superb. Truly top notch finish.
Goalkeeping again questionable though.
-
The pass before the cross was very good too..
-
Is it just me that when the keeper saved the penalty and some of her team mates went to congratulate her im sure one of them had there hand on the ball which if correct it should have been a second penalty to England as the ball was still in play
-

I thought that had happened too.
The USA keeper stepped forward with her right foot also.
In the Scotland game the pen had to be retaken.
-
Apparantly, they have to keep at least on foot on the line. I think it was Collina who clarified this at a recent press conference.
-
Can’t believe we got a penalty for that. If I were an American fan I’d see the miss as justice.
I guess you are seeing it as justice anyway.
-
Well it appears that the match attracted more viewers than any other programme this year so far.

Only saw the pass once but in the build up to the (disputed) Penalty the England player looked offside
I was sure they would look at VAR but convinced they would spot the offside in the build up. Cant say for sure that it was but it just looked it - just as the disallowed goal looked offside to me and the line "proved" it.

Owdoo Wolfie.
You need to be careful saying stuff like that.
You might be labelled an inhuman kitson!!
I don’t think there was any offside in the build up to the pen.

I thought offside in real time but in the replay you can see she's behind the ball when it's played.
-
0-1 to Sweden. What did I say about England's defenders?
-
0-2. Getting absolutely mullered now. What a shame after such a promising World Cup.

One way traffic.has he put reserves out?
