Not sure why 2 RAF jets are required as an escort under these circumstances.

The RAF were scrambled because air traffic control heard a message from the jet2 pilots which was misinterpreted as an attempt to reach the cockpit..
It’s on the bbc website but I can’t do a link from my phone.

Hmm it's a good job we haven't got the likes of Sydney looking after our security,"Sydney Rover to Jet 2 Pilot can you kindly leave the controls of the plane, and open the secure door into the passenger area to ascertain just what all those arms legs and screaming people are actually about."... So please explain Sprotty what the jets were supposed to be doing and what they possibly could do, make noises ahahahhahahah?

Read the article in the link you posted, and then follow the next link to the bit about the RAF. That says why they were scrambled.
If the aviation authorities think there may be a potential hijack or terrorist threat on board, then they call the RAF in. The purpose isn’t to shoot an airliner down, most likely to escort to a particular airport best equipped to deal with such.
This incident wasn’t one of those but the RAF got involved after a miscommunication..

I'm not saying she was drunk, probably tired and emotional but it wouldn't it wouldn't phase me too much if they stopped serving alcohol on all flights as they did cigarettes.

If it got to the position where they think the plane IS under terrorist control, I'm pretty sure they would shoot it down before they had the chance to fly it onto something, or even go anywhere near somewhere populated. Just because they didn't know the full situation at the time they launched the RAF planes doesn't mean they should have.

100% certain they would shoot it down if it looked like it had been taken over by terrorists. Think on next time you get stroppy because they've run out of vodka on board.

On my flight to Belfast recently someone ordered a Kit-Kat and a double vodka and Irn Bru and was charged £15.30 ,of course there’s no money in it

I always thought - and have never changed my mind even after the Flim Flight 93 - that the US shot down that particular Flight
No idea where it was heading but drop it on a major city and / or Nuclear Power Plant and kill thousands or shoot it down and kill hundreds ?
They made heroes of those that overpowered the Terrorists for saving mass casualties and I do fervently hope my "take" was / is wrong but its always made sense to me
The only reason I doubt myself is that someone has not yet "hinted or leaked" that it was shot down

The 9/11 attacks using hijacked airliners as weapons was probably too sudden to scramble fighters, especially if it wasn’t anticipated by the security services..
But if they did manage to get fighters up to flight 93 knowing what had happened in New York, you could understand why it might have been shot down.. but as you say, there’s been no hint of this..

I always figured that it might be heading for Three Mile Island also in Pennsylvania and where it crashed at Shanksville it was 125 miles from there
Reading the history it seems as you suggest that the authorities were slow in getting Fighters scrambled and that only unarmed Jets were around but I did note that 2 of those Pilots said they were prepared to "ram" Flight 93 if it got close to Washington DC to prevent mass casualties
There are too many witnesses to the 93 crash and none say it was hit by Jets or indeed was hit by missiles so my long held theory may be complete rubbish !

Didn't one of the passengers ring his wife and tell her what was happening and that some of them intended tackling the hijackers?
I'm sure that the conversation was released and one of the last things said was" OK let's roll". or something similar.

Filo, to do that would, with some justification see them criticised for penalising the 99.999% of passengers who enjoy a drink and cause no trouble whatsoever.
