Title: Doncaster on the map
Post by: SydneyRover on October 14, 2019, 04:27:30 pm
''Thousands of people drive up and down the A1 every day, stopping off at fast-food outlets and petrol stations. But something else lines one of England's busiest roads: sex shops. Why are they there and, in the age of the internet, who is going in?

Lingerie, handcuffs, synthetic body parts and a £1,500 sex doll - they are all available to buy next to a Shell garage on the northbound carriageway between Doncaster and Pontefract''

About a 100 yards in the Doncaster area bordering Pontefract if the boundaries have not changed.
When Fortes had all the site at both sides of the road, they used to complain that if it had been built the other side of the hedge on the North side, they would not have to pay over a million pounds in rates that Doncaster charged, and would pay about £600k instead, and that was years ago.
Norton at the time, in whose parish I think it is in on the east side at least was said to be at the time the highest rated place in England apart from the city of Westminster by the then Rates Organisation that contested local elections.

Steve, I lived in Norton after getting married, the rates were astronomical compared with most areas in 1968.  The rates association tried to get off the ground and quite a number were elected in the Doncaster area, but when it came to committees on county councils didn't have the numbers to effect decisions and were voted down by Labour and the Tories and were ineffective and fell by the wayside.
Probably the last time the establishment was threatened until the Brexit party came along.

At the time living in South Elmsall I would regularly get picked up there by the supporters buses when rovers were playing up the A1 or along the M62
