Title: Free Transfers - FFS
Post by: philsky on December 28, 2019, 09:54:55 pm

Before anyone starts, I know that these players latterly commanded huge salaries but right now they are earning zilch and are unattached:

Jordan Mutch
Peter Whittingham
Mark Davies
Grant Ward
JET
Matt Jarvis
Lewis McGougan
Jose Baxter
Max Clayton
Niall Ranger
Cameron Stewart
Sylvan Ebank-Blake
Leon Clarke

Surely to God there's value here and DM might be able to at least talk to them.

Leon Clarke?
I thought he was under contract with Sheffield Utd until the end of the season.

Unfortunately we were more in the Kwame Thomas and Rakish Bingham market...

By the way I think Leon Clarke is still under contract at Sheffield United and earning a decent wage.

Sadly true on both accounts but frustrating.

I genuinely struggle to see why you would not call one or two - the call costs nothing. I bet they haven't and I bet its 'agent' related.

He was...but think he has moved on from the Thai club he was playing at.

Judging by his social media, Mutch is spending his down time acting as some cheerleader for the Tories and Piers Morgan. Errrr no thanks pal.

Ok. I'm bored.

Jordan Mutch - knackered with injuries. Hasn't played a league match for 33 months.

Peter Whittingham - 35. Hasn't played a league match for 18 months.

Mark Davies - hasn't played a league match for 40 months.

Grant Ward - cruciate tear 24 months ago. Hasn't played since.

JET - hasn't played a league match for 33 months

Matt Jarvis - 33. Knackered with injuries. Made 28 appearances in the past 5 seasons.

Lewis McGougan - hasn't made a league appearance for 24 months.

Jose Baxter - made 16 starts (all in L2) in the past 45 months.

Max Clayton - hasn't played a game in 24 months

Niall Ranger - Ditto

Cameron Stewart - Ditto

Sylvan Ebank-Blake - 33. Hasn't played a league match for 33 months.

Leon Clarke - sat on his arse on a huge salary at Sheffield It'd. Wilder has called him out publicly on it, but he's not leaving.

Compared to that lot, Bingham IS a quality signing.

No point in posting a list of free transfers. Some Rovers supporters simply aren't happy unless the Board spend money they don't need to on transfer fees. Despite it being good business to sign someone decent without paying over the odds for them, apparently it shows 'lack of ambition'.

BST you beat me to it again.
Yes not one of them is even worth a second look as they are either over the hill or cropped. Except Leon Clarke who IS under contract and his wages will be a problem. Any way we have done that one to death already.

I think our best bet in this window is to try to secure a couple of quality loans. I'm hoping we can keep Dieng and the two Wolves lads, Sterling has gone back and I wouldn't keep Daniels. Sheaf I'm 50/50 on, but if we could get a midfielder like Herbie Kane or similar he could go. Bingham and Thomas can go as well.

If we're still short then maybe it's time to throw in one or two of the U-23s and see if they sink or swim. Otherwise we'll have the same problem we've had for ages- young players who are "potential" until the day we let them go.

The crucial time for Moore and his recruitment guy will be the next window. That's when we need to identify some permanent signings and the Board needs to give Moore the backing.

Even if we got another midfielder why on earth would you send Ben Sheaf back.
I thought our squad lacked depth. Does it not all of a sudden?
We need more bodies in the squad so sheaf would be brilliant to have as a back up assuming of course the man we got in was better than he is.

What about the lad from Palace? Was it a Flanagan? He seemed to get a good write up from his trial so maybe he will be coming in January.

Totally true but hopefully he will want to show Wilder and the blunts that he/they were wrong to let him go.

Equally he could come here and just go through the motions and pick up his huge salary

And what would be the point of taking a punt on a lad who hasn't played for 2 years in a position where we already have Taylor, Coppinger, Sadlier and May to do a job?

He has also scored 3 in 80, admittedly in the Championship. You would hope given we play one up that if you are in the three behind, you can bring some goals with you, beyond 3 in 80.

I'm with RB on Sheaf.  Certainly he shows some good play and has potential and given time may turn into a quality player but his wayward passing isn't just a recent thing, I've mentioned it previously but for young loanees from Premiership clubs I expect to see them progress with games under their belt.  With Sheaf I haven't seen ANY progress.

He got injured on Boxing Day last season
And was a regular in the championship,

My mistake. It WAS last year.

The other point stands. If there's one position we do not need to prioritise for new signings, it's wide midfield.

I agree with almost all of this.

Given what is realistic in the January window, I think we can release Sterling and Daniels. This leaves us with Anderson, John and Wright as first call centre backs, with then Blaney and Sheaf as second call if need be.

Sheaf I would keep as otherwise it is just Whiteman and Gomes as centre midfielders.

Especially if Blair is back in the next few weeks then no need to add to the attacking midfield options.

I would add two striking options in addition to Ennis.

Decent window: keep John, Dieng, Sheaf and Ennis for rest of season, release Sterling and Daniels and bring in two attacking options.

Excellent window: as above but agree deals with Anderson and Sadlier, and sign Dieng permanently.

Deal for Anderson long overdue

Then deal for Sadlier

Sign Dieng

Release Daniels

Flanagan on loan
Striker on loan
Forward player signed on permanent
