Always tough opposition to play against, with a knack of mostly without spending lots of money building very competitive teams. over the last few seasons they have appeared at Wembley on a couple of occasions in cup and play off finals, and again have a game on Saturday v Bristol City after reaching the third round once again.
Rickets their manager has revitalised their side after it was plundered by more attractive sides a couple of seasons ago, and like ourselves, and quite a number of sides, are in a position where a good run between now and the end of the season could see them once again in a play off position, while once again being underestimated by many supporters of other clubs.
Our dogged display yesterday, the great win at Peterborough, and although losing to an on song Sunderland side, I thought we were not that poor, gives me hope that we are getting somewhere near to our best.
Certainly I would stick to the same team as yesterday injury allowing of course, while also hoping that if by Tuesday, if we have not signed anyone, there is the likelihood of us doing so and improving our squad quality and depth.
Taylor maybe a worry, Hopefully not. Thomas coming in and Ennis moving wide could be an option, or giving Watters a full debut.
The attendance after a holiday period could will be interesting, travelling mid week in January not helpful to away fans either.
Lot's to discuss about this game, please have your say.

I feel like a broken record, but Thomas coming in for Ennis cannot be an option. Hopefully Ennis benefits from the free weekend and is ready to go again on Tuesday, perhaps with a new addition to compete with him.
A number of players looked to be battling through wear and tear yesterday. Taylor, Coppinger, Whiteman and Sadlier all appeared to be feeling strains at different times. It’s a demanding schedule.
Hopefully we can go again with the same eleven on Tuesday.
-
It would only be worth making a change if Moore feels one of yesterday’s starters isn’t up to playing 60+ minutes. We got a great win yesterday and our best chance of continuing with that momentum is to play our strongest side.
If we sign anyone over the next couple of days you could make a case for their inclusion but even then I’d be tempted to use them from the bench given they’d have had at best 2-3 training sessions.

watter for thomas every day of the week, he looked lively and actually bothered about receiving the ball. I just hope DM used the game as a reason for thomas to say his goodbyes.....
-
No more Thomas, please. We need a new striker in for next Tuesday and then we can move Ennis, but not before. Further, I hope Bingham has already left the building, in my opinion, both are woefully short of the standard of front player we so desperately need.
Without anymore incomings, it’s to be hoped that the players are in good enough shape to continue, by next Tuesday, otherwise it’ll be a struggle.
Shrewsbury do not concede many goals - they don’t score many either, so it’s anybody’s guess what could happen.
-
Unless players are injured, 6 days is a decent rest period..
-
Just had a look and Shrewsbury's away record is pretty reasonable - only 3 defeats in 11 games (although only 3 wins). As Alan says, they don't score or concede many goals - 7 scored and 9 conceded.
-
I can tolerate Thomas who at least looks like putting effort in and has some sort of physical presence up front. I agree he isn't really good enough though and we need better if we're looking at the playoffs though, so we should be getting rid and upgrading. I'd feel more confident with my wheelie bin up front than Bingham though, dear me.

For his size, I think Thomas' physical presence is really poor. He does at least put a bit of effort in running, though, unlike Bingham.
-
When are Thomas and Binghams contracts up ?
-
I believe near to the end of January let’s hope we can bring in permanent strikers before their contracts are up. Unless we go with 8 loanees instead
-
To follow up my bit on the Oxford match thread about Shrewsbury.
I am pretty sure they will play a similar way as Accrington, MK Dons & Burton did.
Basically they will play 9 outfielders behind the ball. High press if we look to play our short game out from the back. They will look to stifle our 3 in the middle by closing down the space.
We need to be wise to this tactic now and need to be a bit more direct. We will need to play the ball behind their full backs and press them high up the pitch.
Let them make mistakes by putting them under pressure in areas of the pitch they don’t want to be in possession.
There are times we can’t always play pretty football and we have to be smarter to other teams tactics.
With a fit Ennis and with 5 days rest hopefully he can do the running up front that we need to put defenders under pressure. He was excellent at Peterborough but 2nd half ran out of steam against Sunderland and was amazed he stayed on so long yesterday.
Of course we may have a new front man for Tuesday and if so and Taylor is a doubt play Ennis on the left.
This will be a another battle and with the right tactics and mentality we will come out on top.
The first goal will be massive as it often is, but very much so against the Shrews who are very miserly at both ends of the pitch.
Not expecting 4-3 in this one.
So that’s nailed on 5-4 then.
-
......................
Rickets their manager has revitalised their side after it was plundered by more attractive sides a couple of seasons ago, and like
when they got 90 points with Hurst in charge they were "stuffed with quality loanees" they really hit the jackpot there shows what can be done with loanees if you strike it lucky (big "if" though)

Hopefully, all our squad will be refreshed and we could see a different game altogether.
We need our full backs to be able to push on and feed them with accurate first time balls. As we saw v Oxford, both are capable of causing problems in and around the box but we must get in good positions to support them.
Likewise we need Taylor and Sadlier to be prepared to go at their defence and take em on. Just playing as a unit 5 or 10 yards further up the pitch would help.
Without the ball we need to get closer to the opposition and be stronger in the tackle, even if it means leaving a foot in early on, as less likely to get a booking.

What we need to do is use a bit of Nous. We look a good side when we are all at it together as a team.
When we play a pressing game on the opposition which we have done well at times this season.
We have better footballers than most teams in this league have as a first choice 1-11 Yes we have imo.
But that alone doesn’t win you football matches. Look at Sunderland as the best example.
When we play with a high intensity for a full 90+ mins and press teams, move the ball quickly from right to left and visa versa there isn’t a better team in this league apart from that missing man at the top end to finish it all off.
Believe me when we get this squad up to its full compliment of numbers with the RIGHT players (hence DM not rushing in getting the wrong ones) we will make that 2012/13 team look almost ordinary.
A combination of Players with a Winning mentality, Leaders all over the pitch, Grit & determination, Flair, Pace, 4/5 players who are able to score 8/10 goals including 1/2 capable of 15/20 coupled with a fantastic team spirit and you have a team which i honestly see DM building over the next 12 months.
Yes getting ahead of myself maybe, but i can see the vision that the Board and manager will have for this team moving forward.
We don’t need to spend millions that’s the biggest myth there is in football below the top league and even up to a point in the 2nd tier.
I am sure i am not the only person who can see what the club are building. Yes it’s one or two blocks at a time as it should be.
We have looked at the model Burnley have and are following their strategy. Let’s remember they were a lower league club for 30+ years up to the beginning of the previous decade. Yes I know their previous history and status is stronger than ours. But history is past not future. Why can’t this great club of ours with a 300.000 catchment support build its own history.
Answer it can. It will take time. It will take a lot of patience and it will take many downs on the way to achieving the ups.
Before i get completely carried away talking about following Burnley what we need to do is establish the club as a solid Championship side over a period of 5yrs + and build from there.
If this board want to really achieve that goal & I believe they do then it certainly can be achieved.
Good Managers can do this without spending silly money on fees. Wages are always going to be the biggest outlay.
When we next get into the 2nd tier the whole infrastructure of the club will be stronger than previously.
Our gates this season have increased on last season which is a big positive and the whole club is geared to creating the sustainability it has set out to do.
Having 3/4 or even 5 loan players is one of the most sensible ways of bringing in a higher quality player on sensible wages. Nothing wrong in that.
The future is extremely bright the future is DRFC
Not be long before many other clubs start following the Doncaster Rovers model. That’s if they haven’t already of course.
:rtid:

Just to add to my above post.
The youth set up is much stronger now and is beginning to show it’s worth.
We have several players who are on the fringes of the 1st team who have come through our youth set up.
Jones, Horton, Prior, Hasani, Greaves & Boocock are all highly rated, & some are getting experience of 1st team football further down the pyramid.
Players we have brought in from elsewhere at age 17-19 years old like Blaney, Amos, Watton, are progressing really well and are all players with some 1st team experience now and are all regular substitutes in our current squad.
The current U16 side is possibly our best since the late 80’s Steve Beaglehole era. That team in ‘86’ went on to be U18’s Youth Cup Runners up in 1988.
So once again to repeat the above post.
The future is BRIGHT ITS DRFC.
-
Just to add to that, Campsall, the current u18’s are a bit inconsistent this season, unlike last season’s crop (with Boocock, Greaves, etc). But having said that, one or two of them are showing promise.
-
Their away record in League One is good. Last 10 have delivered 3 wins, 5 draws and 2 defeats.

Shrewsbury were the better side for long periods in their cup game at Bristol City with Sean Goss pulling the strings in mid field, and were unlucky not to win the tie when Laurent hit the post with an audacious chip from the edge of the box.
So another hard game in prospect on Tuesday, Their manager Sam Rickets building a good side without splashing the cash, and has them sitting one place above us in the table.
Hopefully Taylor will be fit and no other major injuries will disrupt us, and we can start to see some more form improvement, and show some much needed consistency result wise.
This game could well be one of those that we have to slug it out again, show the character we did against Oxford, and if we can add a little bit of the flair we know our team is capable of, there is no reason we can't get a decent result again.
After the blank weekend I am looking forward to this game, and hoping for a good result.

As I said in my post Brian, this will be a battle. Need to score 1st or it’s going to be very tough.
Get the tactics right and set the tone and we will prevail.
-
We need the same starting 11 as the Oxford game,
Any missing and I think it’s going to be a struggle
-
Really do need to kick on from the Oxford game, let’s win this one and get a bit of momentum!
One game at a time and let’s see where it takes us.
-
The players should be refreshed after the Christmas programme. Even without any additions,we have a fair chance of getting 3 points.
It will help our cause if Ennis is 100% fit and the front players show the same desire and commitment the defence showed v Oxford we should be OK.
I have a feeling we'll be on this and come out with a well earned win
The 3 points with still 2 games in hand will make the task look less daunting.
-
One or two injury niggles that might not be risked according to DM's prematch interview. Quite coy as you would expect on that plus any incomings they are still working hard to get done. Other alternatives to Idah.
I think tomorrow is a very important game for us. Not a must win as such but as good as if we want to close the gap and be well placed to make a tilt at the top six.
-
It’s to be hoped that a few niggles doesn’t turn into a few not playing. There’s only bits and bobs left!
-
One or two niggles that might not be risked.
We’ve nobody to come in, if only we had a capable attacking player and an experienced centre midfielder within our ranks.
Ooh wait a minute

I agree with some of what you’ve said recently but not much point getting upset about something that’s not even happened yet.
-
Yep
Fair point
-
Just been drawn at home to Liverpool assuming they beat Bristol City.
Hope it diverts their minds a little tomorrow eve.
-
Well the Shrews have got a plumb home tie against Liverpool in the next round of the cup if they beat Bristol do let’s hope the players are thinking about that more than us tomorrow night.

How many games would Ali have played if he had stayed though?
Would we have been paying him to just sit on the bench for 20 odd games?

No Ali Crawford thinking that was the experienced midfielder. Alfie featured well for us early doors.

Sorry idler. Almost forgot him.
Thought we had signed Deli Ali to sit on the bench for a split second. Then i woke up and realised i was a Doncaster Rovers supporter

Not sure, he’s a much better player than Gomes in my opinion.
And that’s what a squads all about you need players on the bench to push the others on.
At the moment we have no real competition for places which can lead to complacency
-
Gomes has away to go to be top draw, but his game is developing and quickly. There is a good player in that lad, he has a bit of bite about him and looks to be getting more used to the pace of the game since the start of the season.
He is probably one who will benefit from playing games more regularly and find a natural position as he has had to play different rolls for the first team because of injuries etc and the depth of the squad. He needs to play a lot of games, if not first team games every other one that we can play him in, and develop a little more expansive game instead of playing just a short easy ball most of the time and take more responsibility to create things.
-
Sounds like we got a couple of injuries for tonight
-
Excellent result, shows once again what a strong eleven this is when they’re fit and firing.
The whole back four had really solid games, barely put a foot wrong. Sheaf was excellent in front of them, broke up play, used the ball well, when he’s on that form he looks a top player and helps to make us tick. Sadlier a constant threat with the ball at his feet and some lovely link up play and balls into the box. Ennis worked tirelessly and proved his worth again, he deserved that goal.
Other than the Sunderland game, we’ve put a handy little run together. As I’ve said before, this season is still very much alive if we can get a few reinforcements in.
-
Only Rotherham United and Oxford United have a better goal difference than Rovers. Despite all the moaning about striking options, even the league leaders cannot match our goal difference.
-
Yep, very good assessment. I thought Sheaf was excellent particularly as Copps and Whiteman weren't quite on it, especially first half.
-
Whiteman a great player but has been distinctly average for a few games now. Maybe we expect too much of him but as our main man he is not pulling up many trees at present.
-
Awful game to watch. But, 3 points is 3 points.
-
3 wins from 4 games. Team on a good run and coming together again well. 15th to 11th in table. 2 points to playoffs with 2 or 3 games in hand.
3 more points next Sat would be great.

3 clean sheets out of 4 games. Oxford, Peterborough and Shrewsbury all credible sides.

Never realised that Ennis used to play for Shrewsbury. See this link:

-
Shrewsbury aren't a bad side and yet they didn't even get one shot on target in 95 mins. So any criticism of Rovers has to be a bit harsh. A clean sheet with 2 goals scored. Let's look forward to next sat.
-
Awful game to watch. But, 3 points is 3 points.
Have to disagree.. yes apart from the early goal the first 26 mins or so weren’t great but we dominated that second half and with a rock solid defence.
What do you expect.?
-
I thought it was a decent open game

Awful Alan?
Seen a lot worse than that.
Very professional comfortable win. If it had been 4-0 Shrewsbury could not say they had been hard done to.

Yes credible result, defence very good, best players on the field for us.
Sheaf good throughout and Whiteman quiet really.
Ennis work his socks off and was the best of the attacking players.
Now we come to the three behind part from the cross for the first goal Sadlier was poor. Coppinger was really poor throughout and his performances are going backwards from sloppy short passes. Taylor did not have a good game either.
These are the positions we need to improve with signings.
But a win is a win.
-
I thought sadlier was very good tonight

he played a whole 83 minutes for them just about scrapes in as an "old boy"
On 26 July 2017, he moved on a season-long loan to League One side Shrewsbury Town. [ He made his senior debut for the club on 8 August in an EFL Cup first round defeat at Nottingham Forest, starting and playing 83 minutes of the 2–1 loss.
On 5 September, it was revealed Ennis had suffered yet another long-term injury, this time to his knee, putting him out of action for an estimated four to six months
-

I agree with this, he’s raw, but he’s coming on nicely, not the finished article by a long way, but potential is clearly there
-
Ennis was brilliant tonight. His best game for us imo.
-
Niall Ennis put a proper centre forward performance in today.
Scored a goal, worked his socks off, held them ball up brilliantly under severe pressure and getting fouled. Used the ball intelligently.
Why he didn’t get man of match award is lost on me.
Yes Anderson was his imperious self and also scored but Ennis was the real deal for me tonight.
Excellent games from James, Halliday, Wright & Sheaf also.
Copps was heavily marked and got little protection from the ref.
He still created more than any one else so to criticise him is nonsensical imo.
Overall a very satisfying performance against a miserly defence and the right result.
-
I think Halliday has turned into Mr Consistent.
-
Coppinger had an off night, especially in the first half, but I don’t know how you could say Sadlier was poor, Steve. He made things happen every time he got the ball at his feet. Some very clever use of the ball.
-
I thought sadlier was very good tonight
He was very good, took responsibility to have a pop in the first half and delivered three peaches of crosses in the second half that deserved to be finished.
-
Great result, the attendances though on a Tuesday night are depressing, Don't know what the players must think.

7.054 not bad for a Tues night after Christmas.
Competing with a Manchester Derby on TV also.

Season tickets are always counted.
I think we have about 4.500
-
Yes that's what i said, feels like the support is in decline.
-
I thought sadlier was very good tonight
Yes I thought so too, contributed a lot in attack and his defensive work was good again, a big improvement in the last few games.
The main four to excel tonight for me were Ennis, Anderson, Sadlier and Halliday. Very pleased with how comfortable we were on the whole.
-
The best 4 for me, in order:
Anderson
Sheaf
Ennis
Wright
-
Sheaf, Anderson and Ennis were my best three with everyone else doing their bit.
-
Yes that's what i said, feels like the support is in decline.
I feel the same so let’s get signings done and we might reverse the decline.
-
Yes I should've mentioned Sheaf as well. Showed why he is in the team tonight, he breaks it up very well and his link-up can be excellent. There is a top class player in there somewhere.
-
How is the support in decline?
Our ave gate is 8.423 from 14 games, which is up on last seasons overall ave of 8.098
-
I think the conversation was more to do with how many were actually there tonight! I’d guess between 5 and 6,000.
-

Well more than were there when we played Shrewsbury in Sept 2018 on a Tues eve.
There are always some season ticket holders that don’t turn up, but they have paid so that sale is recorded as a seat sold.
Didn’t look like a 7.500 gate v Oxford either.
-
Why cant they just give accurate attendances, surley it's not that hard to record people coming through the turnstiles, or are the real figures that depressing that we need to cover them up.
-
Let’s take the shine off a decent performance eh. It was hardly a glamour game, weather forecast was shite, just after Christmas (wasn’t yesterday perceived to be the most depressing day of the year ?), a game on tv and hardly any away fans.
If we keep winning crowds will be up
-

What struck me was that we have half a dozen players now who have the potential to create chances and oppositions can't mark all of them all of the time.
Dull, boring, professional match. Never looked under threat with the back four looking really settled and a proper unit.
Now we're back in the mix I'll take a point on Saturday !
-

Could be wrong, but I’m sure it was said on here a few months ago that the club doesn’t choose to declare it that way, but it is the rule for clubs to do so.

Every club will have to declare the gate the same way. Otherwise ave gates would be totally distorted and not accurate.
Gates include all season ticket sales.
-
Awful game to watch. But, 3 points is 3 points.
really???i thought it was a decent game between 2 teams that wanted to play football, don’t think there was much between the teams but they looked like we have done in previous game and had nothing in final 3rd but that could be down to our good defensive display where as they were poor at the back at times and we took a early chance through it which helped
-

Yes, decline is a strong word, as you say there a number of factors that affect attendances this time of year, add to that:-
'False' league position, with our disrupted season so far.
Negative social media. The glass half empty outlook remains strong with continuous swipes at the board and the manager which I believe is unjustified. Not enough emphasis on performances on the pitch and the good results gained against good opposition. Any casual/occasional supporters out there would think the club is in crisis. Even after sound victories like last night, Peterborough and Oxford some people can't resist tainting their comments with negative stuff. Concerns are understandable, unfair criticism doesn't help.
As the glass fills as we move nearer the play offs, hopefully more people will realise the manager and players are doing something right.
-
Coppinger’s pass with the outside of his right foot that curved to the feet of Sadler, who crossed the ball into the box with the resulting first goal, was a pass only Copps could see & execute. Second half he was calm in the box when the ball came to him in a crowded area, he feinted to his left then brought the ball onto his right, picked his spot & virtually passed it into the net with the keeper stranded, only to see it come off a defenders heel in a last ditch lunge & squirm centimetres past the upright.
Got an assist with the corner for Anderson’s goal so all in all not bad for an ‘off night’ Johno.

Let’s take the shine off a decent performance eh. It was hardly a glamour game, weather forecast was shite, just after Christmas (wasn’t yesterday perceived to be the most depressing day of the year ?), a game on tv and hardly any away fans.
If we keep winning crowds will be up
. This, bang on
Yes, decline is a strong word, as you say there a number of factors that affect attendances this time of year, add to that:-
'False' league position, with our disrupted season so far.

My take on the game is it was one of the best team performances of the season up to press.
The defence organisation with our back four and a bank of four in front breaking up play and Ennis also giving a great display tackling back when needed, broke up Shrewsbury's attack in front of goal, and with Dieng showing his calm catching ability and handling we looked the real deal defensively.
The back four unit, the central defenders and full backs are as good on this form as anything in this division surely.
Sheaf is growing with experience into a very good player and alongside Coppinger and Whiteman are a class engine room to the team.
The front three Sadlier Taylor and Ennis on their game are dangerous going forward and all have that bit of flair that upsets defences.
The coaching of the team set up is now coming to fruition, the organisation when we didn't have the ball was the most outstanding thing to me in the game, as soon as we lost the ball, we put their player with the ball under pressure, but the other players immediately took up positions in two defensive banks of four between the man with the ball and our goal, sounds simple but in practice in the past we have not been that good at it.
We have enough flair and skill when fielding our best eleven to worry most teams at our level going forward, now we have to improve our back up to these players so that illness and injury is not so drastic to our quality.
I like the fact that Watton is being nursed through, hopefully to be followed by a couple of others, Blair coming back to fitness is a plus Gomes is fast improving, but up front Ennis is our only bright spark at the moment, and another class act like him is required, everyone knows it. And hopefully a cover wide player for Sadlier and Taylor who is capable of pushing for a start.

Point taken, nobody needs to convince me of Coppinger’s ability and he has that in his locker to produce these moments even when he’s not at his best. There was a spell in the first half where he lost the ball continually. But he’s mentally very strong and doesn’t let that affect him.
As others have said, if the opposition are paying Coppinger close attention then we still have other attacking players that can create opportunities. The three that we have in the current line up are all good players that bring a lot to the table.

Wow Selby, I consider myself to be one of the more positive posters on here but your version of last night's game must be the biggest 'up-talking' of a performance I've ever read!
Shrewsbury were woeful last night. We did a good job and deserved the win, but let's not get carried away.
-
Shrewsbury weren’t very good in the final third last night, but they looked ok in midfield.. we stifled any creativity they may have had..
Many times folks near me in the SS were shouting for our midfield and defence to get stuck on with tackles, but by decent positioning we more often prevented dangerous passes by marking the intended receiver, eventually leading to a nothing cross or them going backwards..
Good defending isn’t always as “visible” as lots of crunching tackles..
For sure, Shrewsbury were lacklustre but we nullified their threats..
-
We weren't great but we were good enough when we needed to be, aided and abetted by 50pence head Ebanks Landell. Some of their passing was woeful but we should also take credit for not giving them much of a sniff.
I think we all know we can lift it a gear as Copps and Whiteman are capable of much better but even without them on song, it was a comfortable win.
-
I think the conversation was more to do with how many were actually there tonight! I’d guess between 5 and 6,000.
Then you'd be a long way off Alan

Brian Kelly right back, Jim Watton left back.
Good team.

I remember Jim.
He was one of my favourite players at that time.
Just looked on wiki, he is still with us, aged 83.
Interestingly it doesn’t show him as having any other involvement in league football since he left us.

Pancho, I was not trying to big us up at all, just describing what I saw in the game.
I have always had the opinion of a team plays as well as the other team lets them, The past great Argentinian world cup sides being some of the best examples, nowhere near as good as some other sides, but found a way to win football games.
Last night our club did that, although our side is a match for Shrewsbury, but the management got our tactics spot on, the players implemented the tactics, and it was the most complete game management display of the season, as the Shrewsbury attacking stats show.
None of our players could be said to have had a poor game, everyone did their job, we were organised at the back and hard working all over the pitch, and kept our shape in defensive situations when we did not have the ball.
We found a way to win a game, and were on top of our game throughout the match.
