Title: Work from home
Post by: Copps is Magic on March 13, 2020, 11:52:46 am
My organisation has just (last night) advised all employees to work from home. Luckily, I am in a profession where I can do that quite easily.

Wondering about other jobs/professions on here... can you work from home or is it impossible?

My team was advised to test laptops at home for connectivity yesterday

I have a work mobile, and a laptop. My own broadband is unlimited so I don’t need to worry about email capacity with attachments etc, and I also have the space to work at home.

We're having a trial day 1 day next week. Got a laptop & phone to re-route calls to, so shouldn't be too bad.

Feel quite lucky. It's others i'm concerned for.

Problem is, lots of industry sectors will face uncertainties so actually doing business is already proving difficult.:

My job is computer/phone based but for factory workers this is impossible..

This is the UK workforce by industry. A massive hit to the real economy would be if we got to the stage of closing non-essential shops like Italy. A lot of the technical and administrative jobs can seeminlgy be done from home.

In my job I do both sides of the job, obviously driving where you can’t work from home, but when I do the base I always work from home, we have a voip virtual office through yay.com, everything a large company switchboard can do yay.com can do it, even internal calls.

I’m really lucky as I was made redundant 3 weeks ago after nearly 19 years, and the turd that took over the company just before Xmas hasn’t bothered with sorting out mine or my ex work mates redundancy money, he’s waiting for investment and a CVA to be put in place. So I’m “not working from home”

We are a totally internet based business - and they won't let us work from home! Which I would guess is down to the directors not trusting us to do our set hours if we are out of their sight.

Saying that we did have an email on Wednesday saying they were looking at home working if it should become necessary. Sort of the Boris Johnson approach, we wont do anything until we absolutely have too, by which time it will be too late to do it properly.

Daughters workplace was instructed to take laptops home every night earlier this week this just assumed that staff have suitable internet connection at home, she doesn't work on a Friday but received a text this morning saying staff are to work from home until further notice. City Council.Judging from the lack of output some put in when in the office she has no doubts that quite a few will give zero output when "working" from home

Our company has gone 50% home working for next two weeks. Not my area as we have audit on site.  I am taking my laptop home as normal so minimal effect for me.  I have more concern on the potential cashflow impact as we arent a huge business and in building services could suffer if buildings close.

My office virtually shut down today, and is officially shutting from Wednesday. We’re a tech company and emphasise flexible working, and probably 25% are remote anyway, but I still think it will take most people a lot of getting used to. I had to get my monitor and office chair home which wasn’t easy but if I’m going to be stuck at home for weeks (months?!) I’ll be a lot more comfortable with them here.

Shopping deliveries appear to now be the 5th emergency service. It's like Christmas but with no end in sight. Delivery slots are full up to a week in advance and that's before any drivers come down with it.

Bit of a problem for me working from home as I'm a postman.

At least you are spending a lot of time in the open air, which is healthy. I heard a doctor on the radio last night saying it is unlikely the virus can survive for very long on parcels and letters.

So the best advice is just wash your hands a lot and keep wiping down the van with antibacterial products.

I work in sales so am home based anyway but we’ve been told to limit customer meetings to only urgent ones and stay home.

It does feel strange today though, phone is very quiet.

I'm WFH today, with the window open overlooking the centre of Sheffield. It's usually full of the noise of traffic and shouting and building sites. Eerily quiet today.

I've just had a couple of minutes looking at the traffic on the main road from Walkley to the city centre. There's not 10% of the number of cars I'd expect to see on a Monday afternoon.

We are trialing WFH this week it looks like a disaster. I work in the design industry and use high powered rigs, the firm doesn't want to pay pricey VPN licenses, so have bought cheap ass chrome cast type screen mirror imaging dongle to go with some.nasty no name monitors. Only problem aside from awful scaling issues is the keyboard barely works, everything has to be done via the pull down menus!!!   Complete nitemare!!!

Second day in a row for me, big respect to people who manage it all the time as I really struggle to maintain motivation beyond mid-afternoon. Today at about half two I spent a good half hour videoing clips of a guy on First Dates who has a vague resemblance to a friend of mine, then another hour and a half reordering and splicing them together into a highlights clip. I managed to answer two emails at the same time so no flies on me.

I’m in a public service. All I can say is it’s been a bloody nightmare so far and it’s not even got going yet. How our services will even begin to manage all this I don’t know. Logistics of public services obviously mean it’s nigh on impossible to run these from home.

It’s highly likely all of us in these services are basically going to get ill.

I'm on 14 day isolation as a member of  my household has a temperature and a cough. I'm not permitted to return to work without signing a document confirming that I have been symptom free for 14 days yet I'll be paid for only 7 days. I'll take it on the chin as I know some folk will be in a worse position but I've already got colleagues saying they simply won't isolate.

Problem is, as 5mins says, the companies are throwing the burden onto the workers. That's really not acceptable when the Govt is making it clear that it is going to support companies to get through this.

I feel quite lucky to work for a company which can still trade through this pandemic.  We will lose revenue without a doubt, but we have been assured the company has enough cash to survive.

I have every sympathy for folks who don’t have the same level of job security.  Living with the situation is bad enough but much tougher with real income problems.

HA HA. My Mrs is borderline OCD so we had a cupboard full of the stuff before all this kicked off. Unfortunately we moved house last Thursday and didn't have a fridge or freezer until last Friday teatime so we have hardly any food due to the selfish panic buying morons. She keeps asking what shall we do if there's no food, so I told her we'll eat porridge and drink water. There's nothing else to do but keep smiling. There's worse things happen at sea.

No. They don't want to take on a loan because of the interest payments! They're creating a proper time bomb with the future attitude of the staff when this all gets sorted.

Everyone who can has been working from home since Wednesday - three people who don't have the facilities are trying to do a bit of social distancing in the office.

I have heard on the rumour mill that someone who was in last week but off on Monday has a partner who is showing symptoms so we might soon see if we shut down early enough.

I said a GRANT, not a loan.

I agree, the loan scheme that the Chancellor announced is batshit. No company is going to take on a loan in these circumstances.

Watch this space though. Apparently the Chancellor has had an earful today from senior MPs from both sides who have a better understanding of the situation. They've told him to get his finger out and mimic what several other EU countries are doing - effectively charge companies negative income tax - pay companies to keep employees on.

In Denmark, the Govt is paying 75% of EVERYONE'S wages at the moment. That's coming here rapidly. Maybe as early as tomorrow.

Sweet f**king Jesus!

Just look at new unemployment claims in the USA.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/03/19/upshot/coronavirus-jobless-claims-states.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage

Gone from historically low to historically high levels in one week. In a normal recession, it takes a year for that sort of change in unemployment to happen. And that new level only adds up 15/50 states! There's 35 states still to add data.

And THAT is why Govts everywhere must IMMEDIATELY underwrite salaries. If they don't, this is going to be the worst economic catastrophe since...well, effectively, ever.

The wife always keeps a couple of spare in but not seen any for over a week in supermarket. We do still have a milkman though.
They reckon a woman in Shipley has bought a load of baby milk and is offering it for sale at £40 a tub. If that is true it's disgusting. People have just gone mental my granddaughter's partner had a woman trying to grab meat out of his trolley yesterday in Asda.

Just hitting me what this is going to be like.

My wife (library worker) has been called into work. Libraries have shut but they are looking at putting the staff into a general Council workers pool for other tasks. I get the logic, but it means I'm trying to work from home and look after 2 kids of 12 & 13.

Going to be fun doing the 4 hour Skype meeting I have planned for after lunch.

I guess we all just have to be reasonable. There is not a chance in a million you can be 100% productive in those circumstances.

Aye and unfortunately a lot of company owners etc don't see it that way.  They've done everything at our place to keep us in and my team are in work also which is an interesting dynamic given I'm now full time at home.  What these people forcing people in to offices etc don't consider is the long term effects on staff empowerment that has.

I'm same. Had a plant closure today because of component supply from Hungary. Open tomorrow and have an action packed day planned alongside entertaining a 3yr old. Can't wait.
