Just being listening to Adrian Durham on Talksport wax lyrical about Niall Mason and the work he is doing in the community. Is he aware of his past??? Surely he is. Just didn’t sit right with me, him being made out to be some shining example!

Maybe the guy feels genuinely contrite about what he did, and this is his way of trying to amend.
Should he be condemned for the rest of his life?

Tend to agree. He shouldn't be condemned for the rest of his life.
He made a big mistake and nearly paid for it with his career.
Hopefully, he's grown up a bit and realised he's got some making up to do.

Made a mistake. Bad one at that. Time to move on. We have a better right back now

Most people do things they shouldn’t have and regret it later.
Great that he is doing something to prove he can do good things.

Dead right mate. It's all to do with casting the first stone. None of us can.

You've not seen or heard the Bernard Manning joke then?
-
I’m not saying he should be condemned for the rest of his life. Just didn’t like the way he was being put on a pedestal.
-
I take it you’ve never made a mistake whether it be as serious as his or just a mistake
Are you saying that once you’ve messed up you can never be thanked for doing something good

What he did was abhorrent. He shouldn't be condemned for life, but I feel the OP makes a valid point about venerating him so (relatively) soon after his conviction.
I've said my piece on this before. If it was your daughter/wife/sister etc. he did this to, would it be so easy to put down his actions to being a "mistake"? It is criminal behaviour and he was rightly convicted, based on all of the facts made public. I'm glad he is no longer a matter for DRFC. If he is doing good community work, that's excellent and I hope he continues to follow a positive path in his life.

I always go back to Dirty Den in Eastenders who was played by Leslie Grantham.
He served 10 years in Prison for the murder of a German Taxi Driver. He had studed acting in Prison and upon release (in 77) was encouraged to become an actor.
He started doing this as soon as possible and it led of course to his lifes work as dirty Den Watts which started in 84 - so my question is when is anything too soon or when do we say "ok X has paid for him crime let him get on with the rest of his life"
For clarity - I have no answer or opinion to offer but there is an interesting debate in there I suspect

I’ve done a lot of things I’m not proud of but I’ve never sexually assaulted someone. I don’t think people are understanding my point, I’m not saying people don’t deserve a second chance, just didn’t like the way he was being championed on national radio, I thought it was distasteful and lacked balance.

To criticise him for community work is ....look yourself in the mirror and seek to find what values you are displaying ..

I’ll say it again, I’m not criticising him, or the work he’s doing, I’m saying it didn’t sit right with me the way Adrian Durham was putting his name up in lights for being a shining example, a model footballer.
And for your information, I do voluntary work in the community every week and not just when there’s a pandemic or I’ve been convicted of a crime, so thank you but I can look myself in the mirror, even if it’s not a pretty sight!

If someone/anyone is doing something good or worthwhile they should be thanked/praised for it
Acknowledging them doesn’t mean that the past is forgotten
Surely no one would want a head line of Niall Mason sex offender is doing great community work
