As a bit of a distraction (and taking a bit of inspiration from RoversAlias’ Cult Heroes poll) I thought it would be interesting to see what the forum’s favourite film is in each genres and ultimately see if one can be marked out as the forum’s favourite. The idea is I’ll start a thread each day appealing for nominations, and then make a shortlist (between 5 & 10 depending on how many nominations there are) as a poll to decide on the most popular of that type (on the following day). Then the winners/top two will go into another poll to see if we can determine an absolute favourite.
I reckon these should cover most film types but let me know if there’s anything missing...
- Comedy
- Action
- Thriller
- Horror
- Sci-fi
- Drama
- Musical
- War
- Non-fiction/documentary
- Musical/Rom-com/romantic (don’t expect there to be many nominations for this one so might as well lump them all together ;) )
- Adventure/fantasy
-
One of my top three films is the Good the Bad and the ugly - a spaghetti western - not sure which of those categories this would fit in. Drama possibly, although it has the American civil war as a backdrop, it’s not a war film.
As for romantic - you can’t get much more romantic, and tragic, than Brief Encounter..
-
One winner for me Kes
-
When they used to do pen pictures of our players in the programme in the Belle Vue days most picked The Shawshank Redemption seemed to be in 8 out of 10's choice as their favourite film.
Mine for light entertainment Forrest Gump
Thriller Kiss the Girls
War World at War series
Comedy Any Laurel and Hardy
Horror The Exorcist
Sci-Fy Star Wars
Drama Shawshank Redemptrion
Documentary One on the first world war with the narrative from a French soldiers perspective shown on Sky documentary channel
Adventure/ fantasy Kes
Romantic Love Story
-
I'd have any of the Spaghetti Westerns
Comedy. Dr Strange love is just genius
Drama. 12 Angry Men.
Not sure what category but Amelie is just beautiful.
Horror: I don't care much for slasher type films. But I'd say Dead Man's Shoes is about the most horrifically compelling film I've ever seen.
Sci-Fi: 2001
Documetary: TV series rather than film. Carl Sagan's Cosmos. Totally changed my life. But also The World at War is superb.
War: Thin Red Line. The scene with the dead Japanese soldier speaking is possibly THE most emotionally searing scene I've ever watched. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DDj64X7hOt3M&ved=2ahUKEwiU9rGY1JjpAhWQi1wKHS4aCv8QwqsBMAF6BAgKEAQ&usg=AOvVaw3-YaWqw8-3usbxW4vMQ2Pd
But my favourite of all time, which is a comedy but transcends them all is The Big Lebowski.
In fact, you could do a decent poll just on the best Coen Brothers film.
Big Lebowski
Fargo
Intolerable Cruelty
O Brother Where Art Thou
No Country for Old Men.
True Grit
Raising Arizona
The Man Who Wasn't There
Barton Fink.
That would cover a lot of the categories and most of the film's would straddle several categories. Fargo on its own stands as a brilliant comedy, thriller and horror film.
-

- Thriller - 39 Steps, 70’s version.
- Horror - Bad Taste
- Sci-fi - Alien
- Drama - the Good the Bad and the Ugly*

- War - Aces High
- Non-fiction/documentary - not a film but a series, Life on Earth
- Musical/Rom-com/romantic - Brief Encounter*
- Adventure/fantasy - nope, can’t think of one..
* top 3, ever.

BST
Re the Coen brothers. I agree, the films you listed are brilliant BUT....
Have you seen Hail Caesar?
Went to Vue to watch it and I've never been so close to walking out on a film.
Christ Almighty it was dire.
The so called comedy scenes were clumsy and not funny.
Later I heard Mark Kermode saying how clever it was.
Went above my head if it was.
-
I can go on endlessly about film, so I'll just post them now and again, if they haven't already been mentioned.
The Shining.
Little boy peddling his trike down endless hotel corridors carpeted in garish orange. Gallons of blood flowing into the same corridors. Formal and sinister English Barman/Waiter explain to Jack Nicholson how he should take his wife in hand. Here's Johnny!
What's not to like?
-
One of my favourites has been mentioned.
No Country For Old Men.
So atmospheric and the acting is great. Watch it every time it's on TV.
One film I have a real soft spot for despite its faults is Inglorious bas**rds.
The opening scene when Christopher Waltz (sic)
Interrogates the farmer and drinks his milk is a real classic piece of cinema.
-
One film that ticks pretty much most of those boxes is The Princess Bride. It's one of those films that you either 'get' or you don't, and if you get it you'll watch it over and over and see something new every time.

No. Just...don't.
-
Some of the threads on here scare me too.
-
Some great films on here. For me 12 Angry men just shades Rear Window and 39 Steps (1970s) for best thriller. A vote for Life of Brian as well.
For me the best Adventure/Fantasy/etc has to be Lord of the Rings, with the first film being the best. As a huge fan of the book I was very worried before seeing expecting it to be too much of an adaptation - but Peter Jackson did a truly brilliant job.
Another film I love is The Lake House (Il Mare). It is a sort of Romcom without the com but a bit of SciFi in its place.
-
I loved Its a Mad Mad Mad World when I saw it as a teenager, when I saw it many years later, I couldn't believe I'd liked it. However Some like it Hot stands the test of time..
-
Apocalypse Now - I love the smell of napalm in the morning...
-
Technically Nuts in May isn't a film. It's a feature length TV drama, well worth it if you haven't seen it.
It's easy to choose Life of Brian, as best comedy film, it is very good... So perhaps Blazing Saddles will do as a good alternative.
-
Spaghetti westerns were classic.
Another Clint Eastwood classic - Dirty Harry "Do you feel lucky... Punk?" Just one of the iconic scenes in cinema.http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=Dirty+harry+youtube&ru=%2fsearch%3fq%3dDirty%2bharry%2byoutube%26search%3d%26form%3dQBLH%26sp%3d-1%26pq%3ddirty%2bharry%2byoutube%26sc%3d3-19%26qs%3dn%26sk%3d%26cvid%3d0927AA0ED3354C5D8E5C48C14987F113&view=detail&mid=749B95704F53680C1097749B95704F53680C1097&&mmscn=tpvh&FORM=VDRVRV (http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=Dirty+harry+youtube&ru=%2fsearch%3fq%3dDirty%2bharry%2byoutube%26search%3d%26form%3dQBLH%26sp%3d-1%26pq%3ddirty%2bharry%2byoutube%26sc%3d3-19%26qs%3dn%26sk%3d%26cvid%3d0927AA0ED3354C5D8E5C48C14987F113&view=detail&mid=749B95704F53680C1097749B95704F53680C1097&&mmscn=tpvh&FORM=VDRVRV) Don't know if the link will work.
Shawshank Redemption
Forest Gump - Just about anything by Tom Hanks.
Probably not a blockbuster but I really enjoyed The Equaliser with Denzel Washington, a good watch, it gives a few nods to scenes and characters in the Eastwood films I've mentioned.
Edit: How could I forget The Godfather?
-
The On The Buses trilogy.

This has got to stop BST. I'm just agreeing with you too much. Fargo is just an incredible film in every way. Didn't Frances McDormand win an Oscar for it?
I also loved 12 Angry Men. Utterly brilliant.
For horror, I can't decide between Psycho and The Shining.
I don't know which category musical biopics fit into, but Walk the Line and Love and Mercy take it for me there.
I've seen loads of documentaries about Charles Manson. Talented singer, songwriter, and musician, and yet an absolute psychopath. Unbelievable.
-

- Action - avengers end game
- Thriller - zodiac
- Horror - paranormal activity
- Sci-fi - Star Trek (new remake)
- Drama - 12 years a slave
- Musical - greatest showman

SS.
Yes, I'm sure normal service will be resumed one day!
McDormand did win a well deserved Oscar for Fargo.
There are some Oscars decisions I'll never get.
John Goodman didn't even get a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for The Big Lebowski. It's the best comic performance of all time. "They are nihilists? Fuuuuuck. I mean, say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, at least it's an ethos."
Neither did George C Scott for Dr Strangelove. That was a performance of comic genius. The line when he tells President Muffley that General Ripper has sent in the nuclear bombers to Russia and the President says "I thought I was the only person with authority to launch a nuclear attack." George C Scott's reply: "Yes that's right Mr President, you are. And though I hate to judge before we have all the facts, it's begining to look as though General Ripper has exceeded his authority." Still cracks me up after watching it loads of times.
Come to think of it, Peter Sellers didn't get a Best Actor nomination in Dr Strangelove, even though he played three roles that were worth one.
And how on earth Yann Tiersen's soundtrack for Amelie didn't get nominated...it is utterly spellbinding music.

I know less much much less about Films than anyone on here I suspect
I think I saw the Coen Brothers (?) mentioned above and wonder if this quiz is any good for the Kermodians on here (I rush to turn him off as well asap)
https://www.sporcle.com/games/ZYX/qp-coen-brothers-or-not (https://www.sporcle.com/games/ZYX/qp-coen-brothers-or-not)
Plenty more of those types in same place
I gave it a go but having heard of only 8 on the list I was not optimistic and rightly so. I got 8 coincidentally but of course they were not all the 8 I had heard of ... give it a go but I will finish last for sure
-
This looks interesting as well
I didnt even bother - probably get 1
https://www.sporcle.com/games/MovieGuru/a-movies-by-quote (https://www.sporcle.com/games/MovieGuru/a-movies-by-quote)
EDIT - I did myself down as I got 2 "Houston we have a problem" and "sniffing clue". Looking at it I should have got 4 as Questions 2 and 7 have clues in them but that would have been it
Of the 20 I have seen Airplane and Apollo 13 (no surprise there) but there are 7 I havent even heard of
-
14/15 for me. Just missed Blood Simple.
Here's one from Sporcle.

-
Bloody hell 14/15 ! I was amazed to get a solid 2
Sporcle has many many good quizzes just like the one you have highlighted there - I will get more than 2 as I spotted New Zealand and 4 so that leads to one man I hope

Thought I might try and work my way through IMDB's top 250 movies, starting at 250.
I own a fair few of them probably 100 on DVD/BluRay etc, and the rest you can rent on Amazon. Might cost a few quid, but I'm not going out to the pub or eating out, and there's a few in there I haven't seen yet.
See if I can manage it. Nothing but time at the moment!
Starting with - 250 - Fanny and Alexander. 1982. Never heard of it, God knows what I'm letting myself into!

Ingmar Bergman's self indulgent look at his own childhood - as I remember from seeing it in Holland nearly 40 years ago it was slow moving and less than gripping for me. Be interested to see what you make of it though - it certainly got good reviews.

Ten mins in, interesting. Not something i'd usually watch, but happy to broaden my horizons. Its 3 hour 15 long so might have watch in two sittings.
