Not sure if mentioned by anyone else, but I recently applied for a Covid refund on my car insurance through Legal and General - due to the lack of miles I did between March and August. I just noticed that I had got a small rebate back from them (£25) because of the under-use of my car during this period.
Not sure of other companies are doing this, but it might be worth checking...... I was still using my car (about 60 miles a week), however still got a small amount back.

Don't worry they will get it all back in the long run wife did hers no changes except another year no claims and price gone up by about 80 pound best we could find.
I've been looking at mine for next year and it's looking like going up about 100 again with minimal changes in mileage as driving further for work

I got £25 back from Admiral during the first lockdown. Didn't need to ask for it they just gave it to me.

My quote this year went down a fiver, quick search on a comparison site same company same cover was the cheapest £72 less than my renewal quote and another company within 3 quid of the lower price Quick phone call they asked if i could remember the date of the search I told them approx double checked my details renewal sorted at the lowest price.
They seem to be able to do a sort of reverse search with your reg number onto the comparison sites cos he knew the amount that had been quoted.
But why the hell dont they just damn well give you the lowest if had been within say a fiver of the lowest price I wouldnt have bothered and they would be a fiver better off although I suppose 70 quid is a few fivers :)

Shop around.. you’ll get a better deal elsewhere as a “new customer”
At my renewal a few years back when I got the new and inflated price I checked on their own website for the same car type with the same policy settings - but by pretending to be a new customer. That price was £200 less than my renewal quote. They wouldn’t match this when I called them so I went elsewhere that year.
They count on folks not being arsed to shop around.

Same. Admiral are brilliant, imo. Got my car and household insurance with them and just added the wife's car today.

I always shop around for all my insurances when they become due to renew.
Lots of money can be saved.
Insurers rely on the thousands of people who just pay the renewal premium and carry on insuring with them.
Be wary though with the comparison sites as the policies that they offer don’t always include everything that your renewal does, even if it is with the same insurer.
Policy excesses can vary too.

I always shop around and then have great delight calling my insurer to tell them I've found it cheaper. Then they try and beat the price, which I don't entertain. Why don't they just give existing customers their best price on renewal. So annoying.

I’m with Direct Line. My renewal had gone up £30 since last year. I tried Compare the Market and Go Compare. The cheapest quotes were about £5 cheaper than Direct Line.
I rang Direct Line and said that it seemed a bit unfair that it had gone up when they must have paid less out in claims due to COVID and less traffic/mileage etc. He said hang on I’ll see what I can do, they then knocked £35 off. So it was cheaper than the comparison sites and even cheaper than last year.

It is always worth telling your existing insurer that your car has decreased in value too.
If you have been with them for any length of time they will still be working on the value of the car that you originally gave them even though in the event of a total loss they will only pay out the market value.
-
I never realised that hound although the policy does say that they will not pay more than market value.
-
It is something I always do idler and it always gets a reduction in what the current insurer wants me to pay on renewal.
-
I’ll remember that in August. 👍

I got a letter from DL telling me how to claim but I couldn't be bothered for the sake of a few quid. Chucked it in the bin.

Did mine online, we are insured for 10k per year on mine and 2k on the missus' car. Think we got £100 back overall. They would certainly want to sting me if I temporarily increase the mileage so its worth claiming back as it took seconds via an online form and i just re declared my estimated mileage.
I would only let my insurance auto renew if its within £50 or so, but it rarely is. I had a really good experience with Direct Line when I had an accident recently and would take some shifting but they were 100's more recently so i moved to Tesco. I would assume they have target levels of insured members per group and don't want all their eggs in one basket. When they get too many employed 40 something homeowners on their books they will bang the premium right up to dissuade new applicants. They don't usually match a quote thats way off, I've even been told by some providers to let it lapse and then sign up again with them to get the newcomer discount.

I had a non-fault bump about 20 months ago. DL sorted it out fairly quickly but my renewal premium shot up by over £100. Nobody else was cheaper so I renewed. I don't know if my age helped send it up as I was 70 when it happened.
