Title: 4 Things We Learned (and 1 We Didn't) from Northampton Win
Post by: RoversAlias on December 05, 2020, 06:45:49 pm
Hi folks,

My analysis of today's game is now up online, looking at the key moments from the game and analysing where things went right for Rovers - along with one thing we weren't able to learn! You can check it all out at the link below:

Many thanks for reading, please let me know your thoughts on the game and the points raised in the article.

Why N/A for Hasani?

Well yes we got the job done.

Maybe I am being over critical because we won away from home and kept a clean sheet but I thought we never got out of 3rd gear.
Yes I know that is all we needed but I thought we did not use enough width in the 2nd half against 10 men.
Sims never tried to get behind their defence like he usually does and kept running into traffic in the middle.
We looked content with 2-0 and at times were too comfortable. I would have liked us to have gone for the jugular.

Any way as I have said it is a results business and if you win not playing at your best then that is always a positive.
John Jules looks a player. MOM for me.
Butler was also excellent.

Why N/A for Hasani?

Didn't play long enough.

Maybe I'm old school but the rules do state penalties should be retaken if an opposition player is within the box when the ball is kicked (especially if they are a yard inside!)
(and yes, it should have also been retaken if we had scored, because our players were also inside the box)

Andy Butler 9 for me.

Nobody deserved a 9 but I agree Andy Butler was MOTM for me.

It was like watching Robert Gills paint dry lol - we didnt get out of 3rd gear BUT hey hey that was good enough

Highlight of the match for me TJ-J s tremendous control and blasted shot which would have been goal of the day in League 1 (maybe I am biased as I havent seen the rest)

Would give Butler an 8 and everyone else a 7. It was no more than that if we are honest.

The clutch was certainly sticking at times.

Whiteman 9!!! Are you having a laugh?

No, I'm not. He did a good job orchestrating the team and making sure we kept things steady and looked for in roads. Played a big part in us overloading their right back which led to the second goal. Everything ran through him.

I did still give TJJ man of the match and Butler a close second, with praise for both in the article.

How many overhit passes camee from him in the 2nd half? What are you to give him when he has a good game 12?

Yeah, if you like EfD. He made a couple of mishit passes because he was looking to make that killer ball - for the most part it was controlled, good play. We would have had a harder time winning that game today if Whiteman hadn't played, I'm sure.

To be honest I get pelters for overrating the players and underrating them every single week. They're just my opinion, and in a normal world I usually do them purely so those who haven't watched the game can get an indication of how players are performing.

thing is Simms is even further inside

It’s common sense to me not to retake in this situation - Northampton didn’t gain any advantage from their players being in the box so there’s no reason to take again. If it had been saved and then cleared by one of those players it would be a different matter.

I did think the keeper looked off his line, though - if he was then we should have had a retake.

Not only should players not  be in the box, they also shouldn’t be within the D on the edge of the box which is there to prevent players from being within ten yards of the ball.
I think there should be a re take if players encroach whether an advantage is gained or not.
It is after all, trying to gain an advantage.
A bit like speeding, is it ok to do it if you don’t get caught.

I think it's one of those rules that no-one cares about anymore, seemingly like foul throws

It really boils down to whether its an EPL game or an EFL game  ;)

Suggest anyone who needs some insight into Northampton’s set up watch the extended highlights and listen to Andy Butler’s post-match interview. Very interesting. Their game plan was to stop us playing. It wasn’t pretty. Those games you have to unlock the opposition and “win ugly.”

We did that. Quite comfortably.

Was never going to be easy playing against 9 defenders on that pitch, sending off helped us have more time on the ball at the back
