Wigan Athletic Supporters Club say they will work to find 'alternative solutions' to secure the League One club's future after the EFL was unable to agree to a proposed takeover of the club by Spanish bidders.

The EFL released a statement last night confirming that, having done due diligence, it was unable to agree the Latics' sale to the proposed purchasers.

Last month, the club's administrators Begbies Traynor had granted an extension to an exclusivity period with the consortium as discussions over the club's sale continued.

The administrators confirmed at the end of September that a deal had been struck with unnamed Spanish bidders to sell the League One club, who were relegated from the Championship last season due after 12 points were deducted from the Latics' total for falling into administration.

The EFL statement last night confirmed that the organisation's board was unable to agree the planned sale as its requirements 'have not been satisfied.

The statement read: "At its meeting on Thursday, the EFL Board received an update and fully considered the latest position in respect of the ongoing discussions relating to the sale of the assets of Wigan Athletic.
