I have vague memories of Man U paying a fortune to sign a 16 ur old starlet from Oldham as an investment for the future ...all about 25 ur ago and I cannot remember the name ...so for Liam ...a fortune

Hopefully he will sign a pro contract with us, I think young players have more chance in getting noticed in Leagues 1&2 than playing in U21s for a “ bigger” club

To be fair to Liam though, would he rather play in a PL U23 team on multiple thousands of pounds a week or be with a L1 club on a few hundred quid a week.

Depends if he's shortsighted.
If he stays on that few hundred quid a week and develops well, he could earn the multiple thousands for a lot longer than if he becomes another one ending up on the scrap heap because he's moved to a big club at a young age and not made it.

I see once again the £ signs are too much to ignore for our selling club with 13 year old goalkeeper Sam Proctor being sold to Aston Villa. It really highlights the fact that we will always be a selling club, putting money before success. These type of players are our future if we believe all our beloved chairman tells us. I'm really doubting this clubs ambitions for the future and I feel the championship and beyond are purely an ego trip for our owners, let alone a pipedream.
The fee is £100,000.

Grainge, I seem to recall something about a fixed fee being in place for young players under sixteen years old being sold to other clubs.
Something like £2000 comes to mind.
Maybe someone might know more about this.
I believe that the buying club can pay more though if they choose to.

Posh sold a 13 year old goalkeeper for £100k to Aston Villa yesterday.
It will be a few more years before they find out if their investment has paid off, whereas Liam is more a here and now investment if they decide to take him on.

Depends what category the academy is, I don’t believe for one minute the sold him for £100k, it is possibly against the rules

Yeah, it's part of EPPP. Higher category academies can sign players from lower clubs for a set fee. They get an amount for appearances and a sell on etc but if they don't make it like with Owen Gamble with us then you receive f*ck all. It's the reason why Brentford and Wycombe got rid of their academies, there's no reason to invest when your best talents go elsewhere.

We got over £50k for Owen Gamble when he was in the last year at school (5th year in old money ) He’s now at York City and with win and appearance bonuses he’s on more money than he was in his last season at Sunderland

Aye, shows how crap it is. If he was coveted as he was one of our best players, then stayed with us he may have gone for a lot more than 50k.

£100k is peanuts to Aston Villa. Its probably a weeks wages for Jack Grealish.

I wouldn’t say he’s a “here and now” investment. He’s played against Wolves under 23s and a few minutes against FC United, it will be another year or two before it’s apparent whether he’s even up to League One level let alone the Premier League.

The most amazing thing to me is he has only played at the most a couple of part games with the first team and one game v Huddersfield with the u18s so these Championship sides must be filming our first team training sessions at Cantley. I thought only Leeds did that.

I agree Selby - seems strange (or made up) that clubs are chasing a 17 year old who has hardly featured in the first team yet.... however, the further up the leagues you go I'd imagine the more resources that you have to scout...
I don't honestly know if he is any good, but I hope he would think that Rovers were a team that he wanted to stay at and develop - especially with DM at the helm.

He has been called into squads but I don't think he has actually played yet.

Seems strange to me aswell, when Lirak has featured alot more and now seems to be a first team regular at 18. I would have thought scouts would see him as a better target!

Liam needs at least a couple of years to strengthen up. He's too easy to knock off the ball in senior games at present.
