Title: West Ham 7th
Post by: andysly on January 21, 2021, 07:32:44 pm
I’m guessing the last time we played a side higher up the league in the FA Cup was Everton back in 84 or 85.
Anybody think of another ?

No idea. It’s just a cup game against a premier side

Apologies, I got the above wrong as I was looking at the wrong week... here's a list of where the top flight teams were in the 1st Division/Premier League table at the point we faced them in the FA Cup.

1985 QPR.      15th
1985 Everton. 1st
2007 Bolton.   5th
2009 Villa.      4th
2011 Wolves.  20th
2016 Stoke.    10th
2019 Palace.   13th

Stoke went 7th in the Premier League the week after they knocked us out the FA Cup, had we played Bolton a week earlier they'd have been 3rd in the Premier League

It is the first time in 35 years that Rovers have been drawn away to a top flight side in the FA Cup.

They have taken a few to replays in that time including Villa and Wolves.

I’m certain they thought even less of us, but Everton aside, all those top tier teams we drew are straight off the list of least exciting top tier teams to draw.

Villa was a decent one, they were a top six side under Martin O'Neil in those days and it was a good game, Sully was immense and we got a bit of press attention for holding them to a draw.

Otherwise, yeah...Stoke, Bolton and Palace don't exactly get the pulses racing - in fact we've played the latter two in league competition in the last decade.

Taking Stoke to a replay at their place really would have seen things come full circle. When Rovers do get to go there, I think there will be a fair few making the pilgrimage.

We got a proper pasting off Bolton. Vintage Kevin Davies.

From memory we did ok against Stoke, got back to 1-1 I think at one stage, and i remember coming away pretty confident about a promotion push- I am not sure we won another game that season and ended up back in league 2

Favourite memory of that game was Tyson running the length of the pitch to kick the Stoke right back in the nads.

Mine was the mazy run by Luke Mculogh

I think that he's probably still running. What an engine he had.
Bolton were a pleasure to watch that day. They played lovely simple football orchestrated by Davies and we couldn't get near them. Maybe if Heffernan's early heade had gone in it might have been different.
I was very disappointed at the end but impressed with Bolton's phenomenal work rate.

As I wrote it I realised the interpretation! :coat: :coat: :coat:

Would have been the biggest league gap ever if we had scored and made in 3-2, 1st vs 92nd, doesn't come any bigger, whatever the name of the divisions. Was it Kitch or Elwiss? Memory not what it was....

It was Kitchen.
We went home via Sheffield and had a few in the Stonebow on the way home to Donny.
