Title: Most dominant sportsman of all time
Post by: BillyStubbsTears on February 08, 2021, 01:54:38 pm
I'm not a massive NFL fan, but surely no-one has ever dominated a sport like Tom Brady has?

Just seen some figures. He personally has won more Superbowls that any TEAM!

The Superbowl has been going for nearly as long as the European Cup/Champions League. Brady has appeared in 18% of all the finals!

The Quarterback he beat last night, Patrick Mahomes, is generally considered to be the best player in the game at the moment. When Brady won his first title, Mahomes was in kindergarten.

Just astonishing dominance over such time in a hard contact sport. only one I can think who comes close to dominating a sport over time like he has is Don Bradman.

His records will never be beaten but then if you call F1 a sport Lewis Hamilton has had a virtual lockout recently

As the Cars are homogenised in the next few years his records will I suspect stand in perpetuity

Brady has been good and as with all (lots) of top class performers has not been without controversy and lots of his peers and detractors will forget "Deflategate" in a hurry and it wasnt his only attempt to ensure his domination

Jahangir Khan, squash player, is thought to have won 555 consecutive matches over 5 1/2 years, which is the longest unbeaten run in competitive sport.

I say thought to have because the actual number of games he played is disputed, with some people saying it is lower whilst others say it is higher.

But from 1981 until he lost the world title in 1986 he was unbeaten by anybody.

I would still give it to Bradman. A lot of the time when you see cricket batting records, they have an asterisk with *excluding Bradman in small print. The guy was so dominant that they have to shut him out of the stats to make them interesting - never seen that with any other sports figure ever.

Joe Davis:

Won the first 15 championships from 1927 to 1946 and remains the only undefeated player in World Snooker Championship history. He scored the championship's first century break, in 1930;
Was the first player to make an officially recognised maximum break;
His younger brother Fred was the only person to beat Joe Davis in a competitive snooker match without receiving a start.

Now, that's what you call dominant.

No interest in American football either, but was lucky enough to be in Vegas 5 yrs ago at superbowl time. Watched it in a packed casino bar on Freemont street and it was truly a fantastic experience, the whole place goes potty for it.

I would have to go to Las Vegas to watch it as I cant stay awake past 10 pm now lol. There Iwould be ok to watch it

Know what you mean about going mad because I watched Game 3 I think of World Series 1992 Toronto v Atlanta in Slots of Fun probably demolished now

They were in raptures but I did notice they cheered everything Atlanta did but didnt cheer anything Toronto did. I asked someone why and they said "Its the World Championship - so we dont want a Canadian Team to win" Instantly I became a Blue Jays Fan and they went on to win that World Series and the next

Couple of years later I was in Toronto and couldnt wait to go to see them live. Still got my T Shirt and Cap

Never seen a betting slip like it for the game  about 10 pages thick. We asked why there was such a big cheer when Toss was won , thinking bit must give an advantage, nope that was half the bar celebrating winning the first bet .

Also worth noting that the NFL Draft system is designed to stop periods of dominance by a single team but when at the Patriots they managed to rise above that too.

If we're scouring all sports though then Esther Vergeer gets a nod - 9 years undefeated in wheelchair tennis!

Whilst he doesn't always come across well in it, The Last Dance on Netflix about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls 90's dominance is worth a watch.

American Football has to be the most boring sport ever, make them play without all the padding and helmets. They have players who’s only job or skill ?? is that they can kick it a few yards further than most . It’s a total crock....

My fav American sport is baseball.
It has a real heritage feel to it, and non of the plastic feeling of their other sports.

Always try to take in a baseball game when I'm over there.

As daft as this may sound, it's the closest they've got to football.

Nothing quite like sitting there with a hotdog in one hand, and a beer in the other.
Such a unique atmosphere too.

Yes when I was in Toronto (a few posts above) I had a Hot Dog and Beer and dropped some onions off the Hot Dog and the Stadium was so clean I bent down to pick them up (and throw them in the bin). I really enjoy Baseball.

Also been to Fenway Park to watch Boston v Toronto and unfortunately the Home Team won !

I was listening to Adrian Chiles on the radio.
He was interviewing a former NFL player who was born in England went to Nigeria then emigrated to USA.
Can't remember his name, as I've zero interest in NFL. It was summat like Onura.
Anyway, this chap took up Americsn football when he was 20 and ended up winning 2 Superbowls during which he dominated this Brady bloke apparently.
So must have been good.

I mean it would seriously damage the players playing the sport, but yes let's do that.  The injuries with the padding etc are brutal, imagine them without.

Brady is superb at what he does. Lots not to like about him but he's still going and has longevity most don't have.

If they were made to play without padding and helmets, there would be more fatalities than there already has been in the game. That's because of the brutal nature of the game.

Unlike rugby, AF allows players to tackle off the ball, and it's not just round the waist tackling, it's full on block tackling.

Imagine being hit full on by a guy who's 6 foot 6 inches and 19 stone, running at you like Linford Christie.

That's the reason the game's full of head, neck, and spinal injuries.

There was lots of debate about whether Brady had been the main reason for New England's dominance or if it was the coach Bill Bellichick, their equivalent of Alec Ferguson.

Then Brady left and joined a nothing team at Tampa. They won the Superbowl while New England had their worst season in years. That is an indication of how overwhelmingly dominant Brady is.

He must be fantastic at his sport, but every sport have had players that have for a time dominated their sport, Mo Farah has just dominated for what 8 years ? and the level of competition varies for every sport, some being world wide others like American Football  localised which makes it hard to compare, as does individuals in team sports.
Some like our sailor Ben Ainslie( he would be a good shout) are in sports aided by technology, as are most team sports at professional level with analysis and video's of the opposition being an aid, Hamilton would he have been as good in a Ferrari?
The main thing is they catch our imagination, stimulate our interest, make us happy, a great gift to have, and they have the glory.

Two realistic and unusual candidates, legendary in their sports:

Pierre Etchebaster, unbeaten Tennis world champion for 26 years ............ Real Tennis that is.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Etchebaster

Heather McKay, British Open Squash champion for 16 consecutive years when that was seen as the World Championships before they started in 1976 (she won that as well). When she retired in 1981 at the age of 40, McKay had gone nearly 20 years undefeated. She was an international hockey player and only took up squash because her husband played.

On a side note.
The best football player has 261 million followers on Instagram.
Christiano Ronaldo

The best American rugby player has just 9 million followers on Instagram.
Tom Brady.

It's insane just how popular football is worldwide. Its literally THE global sport, and why the world Cup is just so special.
