I was there three years ago, probably one of the dirtiest most unhygienic places I’ve ever had the misfortune of visiting and I’ve been to some shitholes, wouldn’t go back for all the tea in China.

We did a tour. Shanghai, Yangtse cruise, Chen Du, Xian ang Beijing. I enjoyed the sights but as you say some of the hygiene was poor and most of the food was awful. The fest food was on the boat during the four day cruise.The hotels were all 5* that we stayed in though.
I wouldn't wish to go back. We were the only Brits in our group with 22 Aussies for company, they were all decent folk though and good fun.

Having worked in China, out in the sticks of Outer Mongolia, I would jump at the opportunity to go back again. My Mrs on the other hand says not a chance

Strange isn't it, but yet over the yellow sea you'll find a couple more oriental countries that are probably the most clean and hygienic in the world in Japan and South Korea.
